Easy Chocolate Trifle

This easy chocolate trifle is one of my very favourite trifle recipes. It’s always a crowd pleaser and really easy to put together. It’s the perfect dessert for the chocolate lover. I’ve partnered with Giant Tiger, and picked up all the fresh ingredients in their grocery store, where they always have great prices and a great selection.

Easy Chocolate Trifle: made with store bought ingredients, this is sure to be a crowd pleaser, and perfect for any chocolate lover.

Trifle is a dessert that originates in England, and traditional English trifle usually involves sponge cake, layered with custard, whipped cream, and usually fruit and often jelly. We omitted the fruit and jelly layer for this chocolate version, but it would be also delicious with strawberries or cherries. We also change up the sponge cake for layers of fudgy brownies, and the custard for chocolate pudding. Chocolate mousse would be a great choice too.

The Easy Version

This trifle is so easy to make. It’s more about putting some store bought ingredients together than actually baking. It’s really quick and everyone always loves it. I used store bought brownies -so good and couldn’t be easier. Some people use frozen whipped topping like cool whip, but I do think that homemade whipped cream is worth it, and so quick to make yourself. If you prefer though you can substitute it to make this recipe even easier. You could even use prepared pudding cups instead of the chocolate instant pudding, if you were really short on time. And the best time saver of all, pick it all up at Giant Tiger in their grocery section, including the delicious Skor mini bars.

Ingredients

  • Two-bite Brownies, 280 g pkg, or your favourite brownies
  • Instant Chocolate Jello Pudding, 113 g pkg, prepared according to the directions with 2 cups of milk
  • Skor minis, 191 g pkg, chopped
  • Whipping Cream, 473 mL carton
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

Instructions

Use 4 individual glasses, or small jars to make individual chocolate trifles, or double this recipe for one large trifle in a large bowl or trifle dish. To begin with, slice 1 1/2 or 2 of the two-bite brownies into quarters, and create a brownie layer on the bottom of each of the four glasses with the brownie pieces.

Prepare the chocolate pudding according to the package directions, and add about 1/4 cup of pudding on top of the brownies in each glass, as the pudding layer in the trifle.

Whip the cream with sugar and vanilla, and use a big spoon to add about 1/4 cup as the fourth layer.

Chop Skor bars, and sprinkle over the top, as the final layer.

Repeat all the layers again in each glass, starting with the brownies, then the pudding, the whipped cream, and finishing with the Skor bar pieces on top of the trifle. Once the whole thing is put together, chill in the fridge for a few hours before serving.

We’ve used our favourite combo here with Skor bars, which are chocolate covered toffee bars. If you couldn’t find skor bars you could use toffee bits. But, the possibilities are endless, try one of these variations next time. Substitute in any of your favourite chocolate bars or dark chocolate to personalize the recipe to your tastes

Turtle Chocolate Trifle

If you’re a lover of turtles chocolates, substitute them in for the chocolate bar pieces. You might also add some caramel sauce and/or chocolate sauce as an extra layer, or add a layer of butterscotch pudding too, and some chopped pecans.

Black Forest Brownie Trifle

If you love Black Forest cake, add a layer of cherry pie filling to your chocolate trifle and substitute chocolate curls and chocolate shavings for the chocolate bar pieces. You could even use chocolate cake instead of the fudgy brownie bites.

Gluten Free

Substitute gluten-free brownies for the brownie chunks. Use a gluten-free box of brownie mix to make the brownies. The pudding, skor bar, and whipped cream are all gluten-free.

Make Ahead

This recipe is a one of the best desserts to make ahead too, in fact it’s best made a few hours ahead at least and stored in the refrigerator to set. Make it the night before and add the final candy topping just before serving the next day for a little crunch.  It’s the perfect treat for a dinner party, or special get together. But, it’s so easy that you can make it for no special occasion too.

  1. Martin never eats my trifle, but has informed me that not only is yours better but that I have to switch to making it this way at Christmas. Out goes Grandma’s trifle, in comes Dannyelle’s, I guess! It was amazing!

  2. This trifle is so yummy! I just made it for a party with family this weekend, and it was a hit!
