Mrs. Dobson was pretty, kind, and smart…she was also my Kindergarten teacher. I loved being at school. I loved the centres, the little tables, circle time, and especially when she played the piano and we sang with her.
I remember the listening centre with the careful instructions about pushing the play button, and the headphones we wore. I remember playing in the home centre with the dolls, and little kitchen, and play food. I remember making block towers and knocking them down. I even remember some of my classmates names…after all these years.
She was the beginning of my love of learning. She made learning fun and exciting, and she made me feel smart and capable, and made me want to become a teacher when I grew up.
I’m so grateful for the amazing teachers I’ve had through the years, and it really makes me appreciate the great teachers that my kids have now.
You know the ones, the ones that pay for extra supplies for the Mother’s Day craft, the ones that phone you when your child had a bad day at school to make sure that they’re ok, the ones that think up extra activities for your child when they’re getting ahead and bored, the ones that go the extra mile, and really see your child as a little person who needs love, challenge, compassion, and encouragement.
Great teachers spend a lot of time and energy with our kids, and this time of year, it’s nice to thank them for all they’ve done -the above and beyond that means so much to this mama.
