Modern Boho Bedroom Makeover: Week 3 of the One Room Challenge and we’re sharing an update on painting the room white and what a difference it’s made.
Today I’m sharing an update on my Modern Boho Bedroom makeover for the One Room Challenge. It’s a challenge where bloggers makeover one room of their homes in six short weeks from start to finish. And they share their weekly progress on their blogs. This is week three and we’ve made some good progress. Be sure to check out Week 1 to see the before and our mood board of where we’re headed. Week Two’s update is all about purging my old things and getting a handle on my dresser and closet.
Painting the Room
This week it was all about paint. We partnered with PARA Paints to give the room a nice, crisp white. I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but what a difference a coat of paint makes.
I actually still liked the old colour on the wall, and it held some happy memories. When we first bought this house about 12 years ago now, it was less than a year old. So it was all still basic builder off-white. We ended up having to bridge our mortgage. So we had this house about a week before we had to move in. That meant a little extra time for cleaning and painting.
We didn’t get many rooms painted but this was one of them. And when I say we, I mean my husband and one of our best friends. The two of them did it one afternoon while I looked after our then 2 year old. It was such a nice treat to have this room painted and every time I’ve thought of it I’ve remember our dear friend and his willingness to help us in what ever way he could. He was a bachelor at the time and from another country and he felt like family. He’s since been married and has his own son, and life has become so busy we rarely get the chance to see them, but I’m grateful for seasons of life like that one with special friends.
And now we’ll have some new memories of making this room special again with an update. We’ll always remember painting through the Toronto April Ice Storm of 2018.
The New Paint Colour
For the One Room Challenge I knew I wanted to change the paint colour to white. The beige was dated, and I love the look of crisp white. My husband asked me if the whole house is going to end up white, and you know what, it just might. I seem to be doing it one room at a time -first the dining room, then the living room, then the kitchen, and then the master bathroom, and now the master bedroom. And I ‘ve used my favourite white throughout. It’s a true white, no pink, or green, or blue undertones, not yellow-y, cream-y or beige-y either. It’s PARA Paint’s WH03 in Cloud White -formerly known as JoJo Whitewash.
We managed to get our paint picked up on Saturday morning before the big ice storm hit Toronto. The ice storm was a bad one and we basically tried to stay in until Monday night when it finally stopped. With nowhere to go we put ourselves to work and managed to get the whole room painted on Sunday. It was a little awkward working around our big furniture, but we moved it to the middle of the room and covered it in drop clothes.
Even after it was all done I wasn’t completely sure. You know what it’s like when everything is still just in your head -or on a mood board and you start to doubt yourself a little?
As soon as we started moving the furniture back after painting and adding in just a few of the new pieces I started to get very excited about how it’s starting to look. Did you spot the new curtains, and just one of the amazing new plants? And so all of a sudden, as packages start arriving everyday, it feels like we’ve turned a corner on this room. There’s still tons to do, but we are making some progress.
To Do List
- make new cement end tables
- buy frames for new art and hang gallery wall
- buy new linen bedding
- get some blinds for the windows
- add in all the new plants
- shop for and DIY some more accessories
- install the new light fixture
- put the new chair in the room
I have to say I was a little shocked when my husband mentioned a project for the next One Room Challenge in the fall this week. That was before he spent a day helping me paint, slept in our daughter’s room while the paint dried and spent the week with all the stuff from the room we’re doing scattered all over the upstairs. We’re hosting a party on the weekend so we will be forced to get things tidied up a little. Those donate bags will actually get dropped off at the second hand store, which is probably a good thing. Only three more weeks and it will all be done.
