Butter Chicken Pizza Recipe

Butter Chicken Pizza Recipe: use frozen naan bread and jarred butter chicken sauce from the grocery store, for this quick and easy butter chicken pizza recipe.

Butter Chicken Pizza

Butter Chicken is a real favourite around here… and so is pizza.

Our family loves going out for authentic Indian food, and enjoying everything cooked in a tandoori oven.  My husband is of Indian descent, and our local Indian restaurant is a regular stop for us.  My girls basically only order the butter chicken and have it with rice and naan bread.  It is so delicious and a real favorite food.

Butter Chicken Meets Pizza

When I saw a favourite frozen pizza brand offered a Butter Chicken Pizza we had to try it.  It quickly became a family favourite, until it was discontinued.  I was pretty sad the first time I noticed it had disappeared from the stores.

Time Saving Shortcuts

It’s quite simple to put together, and so yummy.  If your family loves Butter Chicken and Pizza too, I’m sure they will love our Butter Chicken Pizza!  We used some shortcuts for our butter chicken pizza ingredients to make it a little quicker and easier.  Instead of using pizza dough to bake our pizza crust we used store bought frozen naan bread as the base.  The frozen naans give the pizza base a more authentic Indian pizza flair and a great crust.  Look for the frozen naan bread or garlic naan in the freezer section of your grocery store.  And for our butter chicken we used a jarred butter chicken sauce.  You could also use leftover butter chicken.  You do want to use a saucy butter chicken, because you will use the curry sauce as the pizza sauce for your naan pizza.  These little shortcuts help make this a doable at home weeknight meal.

Caramelized Onions

Don’t skip the caramelized onions in this recipe.  They add a wonderful sweetness to the pizzas.  The best way to make them is over a very low heat so that they do not burn.  As they cook the natural sweetness from the onions intensifies and they go a beautiful golden brown color.  This process can take a while, but adding the brown sugar speeds it up a little and creates a wonderful sweet and a little sticky final result.  We used regular onions, but red onion would be a great choice too, as they tend to be naturally a little sweeter than regular onion.

Finish With Yogurt and Fresh Coriander

We finished our pizzas after they were out of the oven with a little natural yogurt.  Indian curries are often served with natural yoghurt, and it adds so much to these pizzas.  Just plain natural yogurt makes the perfect yogurt sauce for topping.  We tried it both with and without this topping and found it was so much better with.  We also like to add a sprinkle of fresh coriander leaves.  This adds some freshness and brightness to the dish.  Not only does it look really pretty, but the fresh coriander flavor gives the best results.

Ingredients

  • 4 frozen naan bread
  • 1 jar butter chicken sauce
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 chicken breasts
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 cups grated mozzarella cheese
  • fresh cilantro
  • plain natural yogurt

Instructions

    1. Prepare your butter chicken according to the directions on the sauce. Chop the chicken breast in bite size pieces. Cook the chicken pieces in 1 tbsp of oil, on a medium-high heat, until cooked through. Next add the butter chicken sauce, and simmer. To make it more creamy, add heavy cream at the end.
    2. To make the carmelized onions, begin by slicing the onion. Add 1 tbsp of oil to a frying pan and saute over a medium to low heat. Add 2 tbsp of brown sugar and cook until the onions are dark and soft, taking care not to burn them.
    3. To assemble the pizzas, place the frozen Naan bread on a baking sheet. Divide the butter chicken between the four Naan breads. Now add the caramelized onions, dividing them evenly over the 4 pizzas. Top each pizza with 1/2 cup of grated mozzarella cheese.
    4. Bake the pizza at 400 in a preheated oven, for about 10 min. until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
    5. Before serving top each pizza with chopped fresh cilantro, and a drizzle of yogurt. Enjoy!

Butter Chicken Pizza on a cutting board

I love that this recipe uses frozen naan bread and jarred sauce so it’s quick and easy, and perfect for even a weeknight dinner.  We love our authentic, tandoori oven baked Indian food, but it’s not really doable at home.  Using the frozen naan bread and jarred sauce makes it quick and doable at home.  Make it in about the same time it would take to order and pick up take out.  Pair this with a salad for a really satisfying meal.
