I love to entertain, and find that my guests love any kind of buffet/bar where they get to build their own. So, for a fun Canada Day get-together last year, I came up with the idea of a Funnel Cake Buffet, and everyone LOVED it.
We started out with the basics, funnel cakes. We made regular Funnel Cakes -get the recipe here, and then experimented by making chocolate with a little cocoa powder added to the basic recipe. I made the batter ahead of time, and set up my little deep fryer outside beside the bbq, and cooked up the funnel cakes as fast as I could for all our friends after dinner. Then we invited guests to choose from some classic toppings to make their own Funnel Cake creation.
I made regular and chocolate whipped cream, by adding a tbsp. of cooca powder to the chocolate one as I mixed it (along with the regular sugar and vanilla).
Our other toppings included ice cream, fresh strawberries, maple syrup, chocolate sauce, cinnamon sugar (for a classic) and some shaved chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, and Canada Day sprinkles -to mark the festive occasion.
We had a really great time, and there were no worries about which kids liked what, since everyone could just make exactly what they liked.
With your own Funnel Cake Buffet, life really is a party! Wishing all my fellow Canadians a very happy Canada Day tomorrow, and to my American peeps, I hope you have a wonderful July 4th!
