These Gingerbread Extreme Milkshakes are just in time for a special holiday season treat, I’m sure Santa would love one too.  If you love gingerbread cookies and holiday treats, then this is the recipe for you.

If you haven’t heard of Extreme Milkshakes or Freakshakes you’re missing out.  They’re milkshakes kicked up a few notches, with the addition of lots of extra treats on top!  But you can also make these has regular milkshakes, just leave out all the fun toppings piled on top.  Either way, these this gingerbread milkshake recipe is sure to become a new holiday favorite, and a great way to spread a little holiday cheer.

I thought it would be fun to make Gingerbread Milkshakes for the holidays.  They’re the perfect treat for Christmas.  I made these for my kids and they LOVED these delicious treats.

Homemade Gingerbread Syrup

To make these sweet treats, start by making yourself a batch of Gingerbread Syrup.  It’s easy to make, and uses simple ingredients, and keeps in the fridge for weeks.  It also tastes amazing with your coffee too for a little gingerbread latte.  If you love all things gingerbread flavor, you will love it.

Some recipes for gingerbread milkshakes suggest using gingerbread ice cream, but it can be expensive and hard to find.  With our easy to make gingerbread syrup, you can use regular vanilla ice cream to make your gingerbread cookie milkshake, and then use any leftover gingerbread syrup in your coffees all season long.

Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

Gingerbread Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 1/2 tbsp chopped fresh ginger

Gingerbread Milkshake

  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp gingerbread syrup
  • optional toppings like whipped cream, donuts, gingerbread men, sprinkles, and candy canes

Instructions

  1. To make the Gingerbread Syrup, combine the water, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and fresh ginger in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, and cook stirring all the sugar is completely dissolved, about 5 mins. Allow to cool, and strain, then store in a jar.
  2. To make the Gingerbread Milkshake, combine the ice cream, milk and gingerbread syrup in a blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Serve in a mason jar that has been rimmed with chocolate and sprinkles, top the milkshake with a donut, whipped cream, sprinkles, gingerbread man, and a candy cane. Enjoy!

gingerbread men and Gingerbread Milkshake

Extreme Shakes

The extreme part of the milkshake is all the fun toppings piled high.  We started with dipping the rim of the glass in melted milk chocolate and then sprinkles.  Next, we topped off the milkshake with a gingerbread donut, lots of whipped cream, more sprinkles, a gingerbread man cookie and a candy cane for a classic Christmas addition. Don’t forget a festive colorful straws.   A cinnamon stick would be a great garnish too.  You could also use cookie crumbs in addition to the sprinkles.  Or even add mini gingerbread houses to the top.

These would be very fun to serve at a gingerbread house decorating party.  They’re perfect for anyone who loves seasonal flavor drinks this time of year, but prefers a cold treat.  Kids really love these gingerbread milk shakes.
