chocolate cake mix prepared according to the package directions

½pint237mL whipping cream

Instructions
Make the chocolate cake according to your package instructions and bake the cake batter in two round cake pans. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
Use your mason jar like a circle cookie cutter to cut out a circle of cake for each of the individual cakes. Cut the circle in half so it's half as thick and you can use it for two thin layers of cake.
To make the whipped cream, add ½ pint of whipping cream to your stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Whip cream to soft peaks, and add vanilla extract and sugar. Whip to firm peaks.
Assemble the black forest cake in your mason jar, beginning with a bottom layer of cake, then add a layer of cherry pie filling,and then a layer of whipped cream. Repeat, with another layer of cake, pie filling and whipped cream. Take care to keep the sides of the jar clean. We found it was easiest to put the whipped cream in a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off or a piping bag and pipe it into the jars.
Finish off the last layer of the black forest cake jars with a sprinkle of chocolate shavings. Let set in the fridge for an hour or two before serving
