Boho Christmas Mantel: Black and White Modern Boho mantel with lots of tassels, pom poms, fringe, bottle brush trees, stockings and garland.
One of my favorite parts of holiday decorating is to create a beautiful festive Christmas mantel. If you love boho decor, I think you’ll love this. Our boho Christmas mantel in neutral colors of black and white is perfect for the Christmas season. I used lots of DIY Christmas mantel projects, and I hope it gives you lots of Christmas mantel decor ideas for your own Christmas fireplace.
I’m so excited to be joining in again today with the Seasonal Simplicity series hosted by The Happy Housie and sharing my mantel. Be sure to check out all the other mantels today at the end of the post.. It’s also Day Two of my own Boho Christmas Series. Did you see our Boho Christmas Reading Tent yesterday -it’s one of my cutest projects ever.
My basement family fireplace is a real favourite of mine. We moved into this house when it was just about 8 months old, which meant that it was new, but all the finishes were already picked of course. For the most part it was very neutral. A few things won’t have been my choice, but I could certainly live with them. But when we moved in the basement was un-finished. We saved up for a while, and decided it should be our first major project in the house. We had a three year old and baby, and we knew we wanted a big family room, playroom, tv watching, gathering space.
My brother-in-law worked for us on weekends, and finished the entire space. It was the first place that I really got a chance to design. I had the crazy idea of making the fireplace surround out of concrete, and wood veneer. My amazing brother-in-law was up for the challenge and created this amazing fireplace for us, bringing my design dream to life. I love it. I loved it when we put it in about 10 years ago (wow, time flies fast) and I still love it. It has lots of drama, is modern, and a little unexpected. And, it’s always fun to decorate for the holiday season.
Black and White Boho Christmas Mantel
This year we’re doing Modern Boho with a black and white color scheme for Christmas in the family room. My first project for the fireplace mantel was giving my deer head a little makeover. The deer head is made of paper mache that I spray painted white years ago. He still feels perfect for Christmas. He got a bit of a boho makeover by wrapping his antlers in different black and white yarns. It adds some fun texture, and was super easy to do. I think this is a great idea for adding lots of texture to our focal point.
One aspect of boho design is to add in well traveled vibe by adding treasures with a global influence. Another element of boho design is adding lots of textures and natural elements. This pretty star garland was bought at a shop where women from other countries can work on fair trade projects to help support their families. It feels global, Christmas-y, and natural, and it adds texture -so it’s ticking all the boxes. 😉
On top of the mantel I did a collection of bottle brush trees in our black and white color palette.
I love the tall ones -picked up at Hobby Lobby on a recent cross border shopping trip. The rest are ones I had in my Christmas boxes. I wanted to add just a few black ones to bring it in, but couldn’t find any black bottlebrush trees while I was shopping. So, I DIY’d these ones. They started out green, and I spray painted them black, and then added some black glitter. I only needed a few to tie in the black here, so this DIY worked out great. It’s a fun and easy way to bring in the black.
I also included a few fun 3-D Christmas trees in warm wood tones. These are from a few years ago, but worked perfectly here.
Fringe definitely feels very boho so it was the perfect main garland here on the mantel. It’s easy to find at the fabric store, and you can purchase it by the yard to fit your space. It come sin lots of different designs and widths. The natural colors are perfect for our color scheme. A macrame garland would be a great choice here too. But the fringe gives a very similar look to macrame, and it’s much easier. It’s the perfect boho Christmas decor touch. I also layered it with some black and white felt ball garland, and more of the straw stars. And then I added one strand of twinkle lights for a little Christmas sparkle this time of year.
This layered garland choice is a great alternative to using fresh greenery. It won’t dry out with a roaring fire, and it’s a great way to add lots of texture and interest. Wood bead garlands would be a great addition.
I hung the garland with command hooks on the side of the fireplace. These are a great idea. They’re inexpensive and easy to remove after Christmas with no marks left behind.
Boho Christmas Stockings
The DIY boho Christmas stockings are a favourite of mine. I made the fun stocking tassels myself. This was a fun way to add a boho touch to cable knit stockings. For our pom pom stockings makeover I made a big tassel and big pom pom for each and threaded on some wooden beads. These tassels would be a fun door knob tassels after Christmas time too. A smaller version would be great Christmas decorations for the tree also.
I love how this holiday mantel turned out -the black and white are fun, and a little something different. This simple mantel display is full of texture, and interest, and the perfect festive touch for the holiday season. This cozy Christmas mantel is one of my favorite holiday decorations.
With a black and white Boho Christmas Mantel, life really is a party!
