Adult Mermaid Party Ideas: A Beach Picnic Goodbye to Summer

Published: Sep 3, 2026 by Dannyelle Nicolle-Ramjist · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

This is not a little girl's mermaid party. We said goodbye to summer with sequins, iridescent details, real shells, fish and chips, and themed desserts, all set right at the water's edge for an adult mermaid party that felt grown-up from the first sparkle to the last bite.

Quick Look

  • 📋 Party: Adult Mermaid Party, an End of Summer Beach Picnic
  • 📍 Location: Beachside
  • 👪 Guests: Small group
  • 🎨 Palette: Blue and white, iridescent accents, natural shells, a little sparkle
  • 💭 Top Tip: Bring sparklers for a beach side photo op

Why You'll Love This Party

  • A grown-up spin on mermaid theming, sequins and iridescence instead of balloons and plastic
  • A stunning beach location doubles as your décor, no elaborate backdrop needed
  • Inexpensive freshwater pearl ring favors guests will actually want to keep
  • A dreamy blue and white dress code that photographs beautifully
  • A theme that works perfectly for a bachelorette party, summer or goodbye to summer bash, or a birthday

Our adult mermaid party was full of elegant coastal details. We sat at the water's edge and dined on real plates, no plastic in sight. The table was adorned with sequins, real seashells, and candles. Mermaid parties usually mean little girls, balloons, and mermaid tails, but this one was built for grown ups who love a little whimsy. It was pure magic.

The Beach Setting

We're lucky enough to live on the shores of Lake Ontario, so I thought the beach was the perfect spot for our adult mermaid party. We scouted out a more secluded spot with a parking area not too far away, and loaded up all our gear.

We brought our own low table top, supported on baskets, along with lots of blankets and pillows to sit on to make it as comfortable as possible.

Top Tip: If you're using baskets as table supports, pack them empty for the trip down. We filled ours with supplies, which meant unloading everything before we could even set up the table.

Weather: Any outdoor party is dependent on good weather. After lots of hosting outdoors this summer, my advice is to book the date along with a backup date. This picnic just isn't the same inside. Keep an eye on the weather report and plan accordingly.

The Table Setting

Since the beach was already doing most of the visual heavy lifting, we kept our décor centered entirely on the table.

The Table: We have a table with screw on legs that works perfectly set on baskets without the legs screwed on, as a low picnic table. You could also use a simple piece of plywood set on 2 -3 large square baskets.

Sequin Tablecloth: I thought sequins were the perfect nod to mermaid tails with scales, and wanted to use them as a tablecloth. I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, so headed to the fabric store. We ended up with a fabric remnant discounted to $10 which worked out perfectly. We layered it over a large plain white table cloth.

Place settings: Real plates, glasses, and cloth napkins helped this theme feel grown up. Tips for packing, place them in a sturdy wooden crate or laundry basket, use your blankets or pillows for padding. Be sure to bring some empty plastic bags to put dirty plates and dishes into afterward to transport them home. Find more tips on what to bring to a picnic here.

  • Scallop-edged white plates, our favorite nod to the theme without a single plastic mermaid tail in sight
  • Gold flatware for a little extra shine
  • Iridescent stemless glasses
  • Striped napkins for a coastal, timeless feel

Shells: You can't have a mermaid party without shells. The large conch shells were a Facebook market place find. You can also look for shells at the craft store, or small ones at the dollar store.

Shell Candles: We used a few larger shells to make candles. I used a knife to cut a regular tea light and remove the wick, then place it in the shell. I melted the wax in an upcyled tin can in a pot of boiling water and poured it in. I added a little glitter and a few pretty pearls and rhinestones. These looked so pretty lit on the table.

Mermaid Inspired Menu

Fish and Chips: This was the perfect easy way to serve fish at the beach. My husband did a takeout run as soon as our guests started to arrive. I unwrapped them onto a large platter and served them hot. We also served individual ketchup and tartar sauce in real seashells for anyone who wanted them. Another great option would be sushi.

Drinks: Mermaid mocktails, half Gatorade, half Sprite, with a swirl of luster dust for that shimmery, underwater look. I made stir sticks with wooden skewers and real shells, they worked perfectly for swirling.

Mermaid Cake: I baked a simple cake mix vanilla cake, and my daughter decorated it for me with a Swiss meringue and blueberry jam filling -blueberry felt fitting for our color scheme. We also picked up a shell mold and made simple chocolate shells that got sprinkled with edible iridescent glitter and lustre dust. I also wanted some large pearls so I found some white chocolate Maltesers at the British imports store and used the lustre dust on them as well. We finished the cake off with some simple white ribbon bows.

Seashell Madeleines: I made our Browned Butter Pecan Madeleines and just left the pecans out. Once they were baked, I sprayed the Madeline pan with non-stick spray and added a layer of melted white and a little blue chocolate, then pressed the baked Madeleines into the chocolate and put it into the fridge to set. They popped out, and I put two Madeleines together with some frosting, and added a white chocolate Malteser with lustre powder to look like a pearl in an opening oyster. The white chocolate Maltesers are a British candy, but work perfectly. Look for them at a British imports store or online. These cookies turned out adorable and were so yummy too.

Almond Sand Dollar Cookies: Almond cookies with frosting were decorated with sliced almonds to look like sand dollars.

Tea: When I was a kid, my mom was a Tupperware lady and they were gifted rewards so meeting certain sales numbers. One of hers was a large thermos. My parents used to use for long trips, or days out and never failed to praise how wonderful it worked to keep the tea hot, and how delightful it was to have a hot cup of tea with them. I found a similar one at a thrift store years ago, and similarly love it. There's nothing quite like a hot cup of good tea on the beach with dessert.

Photo Op

Dress code: We asked everyone to wear blue and white, which made for the dreamiest, most cohesive photos against the beach backdrop. This is such an easy detail to add if you're planning this for a birthday or bachelorette group, coordinated outfits take the photos from cute to stunning with almost no extra effort.

Sandcastle Cake and Sparklers: As the sun started to set, we built a little sandcastle cake decorated with seashells, right at the water's edge and topped it with candles for one last golden hour shot with all the sparklers lit. It felt like the perfect way to mark the moment on the beach together.

Party Favors

Freshwater Pearl Rings in Shell Ring Boxes: We sent everyone home with a freshwater pearl ring, simple, elegant, and exactly the kind of favor guests will actually wear again rather than tuck away in a drawer. They tied in beautifully with the shell and pearl theme running through the whole party, and felt special without being over the top.

This is another detail that would work just as well for a bachelorette, a small gift that fits the theme but doesn't feel like a gimmick.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you need for an adult mermaid party?

The essentials are a beautiful location (beach, lakeside, or even a backyard), a table with coastal styling (sequins, real shells, and iridescent details go a long way), a grown-up menu, and a dress code that ties everyone together visually.

Is this theme good for a bachelorette party?

Yes. The elegant, coastal take on mermaid theming works beautifully for a bachelorette group, especially with the blue and white dress code and pearl ring favors as a memorable, wearable takeaway.

Do I need a permit to host a party on a public beach?

Most public beaches allow small gatherings without a permit, but it's worth checking your local park's rules ahead of time to be sure.

What if the weather doesn't cooperate?

Always book a backup date, and keep your eye on the weather report. Outdoor parties are entirely weather dependent, and this one especially wouldn't have the same magic indoors.

Where did you find the shells for decor?

Larger conch shells were a Facebook Marketplace find. Craft stores and dollar stores are great sources for smaller shells too.

Can you drink alcohol on a public beach?

This varies widely by location, many public beaches and parks prohibit alcohol entirely, while others allow it with restrictions (no glass containers, designated areas only). Check your local municipality or park authority's bylaws before you plan your menu, since this isn't something you want to find out the hard way on party day.
