We love this idea for Father’s Day because it’s super easy to make, so even the youngest kiddos could help put it together and it’s really delicious.  I usually try really hard to avoid stereotypes, I’m sure not all husbands or dads are the main bbq-ers.  So it might work for your crew for Father’s Day, or it might work for your peeps for Mother’s Day.  Let me just say that if you’re into steak, it’s really yummy, and it’s really easy to make.  So this homemade spice blend is ticking all the boxes on my list, tick, tick. 😉

Montreal Steak Seasoning History

This popular Canadian steak seasoning has its origins as the recipe used to flavor Montreal smoked meats.  The spice rub traditionally includes garlic powder, coriander seeds, black pepper, cayenne pepper, herbs, and coarse salt.  When Morris “The Shadow” Sherman who worked at Schwartz’s Montreal-based deli started using it on steaks as well as smoked meats, customers wanted to try it to, loved it.  It become popular in Montreal delis and local steak houses as customers requested it and the rest is history!

This seasoning blend is very easy to put together.  It’s a combination of simple ingredients you probably have in your spice cabinet right now.  This combination of basic spices, takes an ordinary steak ot the next level.  You can use ground spices, or start with whole spices and grind your own in a coffee grinder or spice grinder for the freshest flavors.

How to make DIY Montreal Steak Seasoning

Use this Montreal steak spice on any grilled meats.  It’s the best steak seasoning, try on your favorite steaks, like filet mignon, flank steak, sirloin steak, chuck roast, and more.  You might even like on pork chops.

In general meat loves salt, having said that, this seasoning mix is quite salty.  I’m a big fan of it being on the salty side.  Having said that, start with a little bit, and add more of the spice mix to your meat if you feel it needs it.  The beauty of making the homemade version, so if you find it to be too much salt, feel free to reduce the salt for your own blend and customize it to your personal taste.  You can even change and customize your own spice blends if you want to, adding or leaving out any spices that you want.

  1. Hi Kate,
Sorry I don’t remember exactly how much this recipe made. I think I just used old mason jars, or spice jars from the dollar store.
    Best of luck,

  2. Hi Carla,
I’m not sure how it would be? Meat loves salt, but even with less at least you’d have some nice spices. Worth a try. Let us know how it works out.

  3. Hi Kate,
I agree with your thoughts on reducing salt. I just made this and it’s waaayy too salty. Personally I think I would use half as much next time.

  4. Hi Margaret, For sure reduce the salt if that suits your tastes better. That’s the beauty of making things yourself, you can totally customize it, so it’s perfect for you. Hope you enjoy!
