Last night, Friday night, Homemade Breaded Onion Rings seemed like the perfect treat to kick off the weekend. These onion rings were amazing. Made with simple ingredients, they're the perfect balance of crunchy seasoned goodness on the outside, and sweet tender onion on the inside. If you're an onion ring fan, you will love these ones coated in panko breadcrumbs and deep fried to perfection.
I heard it said once that if you only ate french fries when you made them yourself, from scratch, it would probably be about right -from a calorie and health perspective. Since they’re a lot of effort, it’s good that they’re a sometimes, not all the time treat. The same could be said of these amazing onion rings.
Not an everyday kind of food, a little fiddly to make, but so, so worth it. These homemade onion rings are definitely worth the trouble. After the first crunchy bite, I’m sure you’ll agree with me. They're the perfect side dish accompaniment to your favorite burger, or hot dogs. Also a great appetizer or snack. Make them as a game day snack.
Onions
Onion rings are made of slices of raw onion. The onion is sliced so that it forms rings, and then the rings are coated in breading and fried. You can use any white onions or yellow onions for this recipe. The very best onions for this recipe are sweet onions. I like to use Spanish onions. Vidalia onions or Walla walla onions are a great option too.
You want the onion slices to be about ¼ inch thick. Discard the very smallest and center rings from the onion.
Bread Crumbs
We love to use panko bread crumbs for the best onion rings. The panko bread crumbs make the most crispy onion rings. Look for panko crumbs in the grocery store with the regular bread crumbs. Panko bread crumbs are a Japanese bread crumb. These crumbs are made from crustless white bread and are flaked and dried to produce a lighter and crispier bread crumb. When used in fried food, it creates a crunchier effect than regular bread crumbs do. In this recipe we combine both the crunchy Panko bread crumbs and seasoned Italian regular breadcrumbs for the perfect blend of both.
Breading Station
Preparing your delicious onion rings can get a little messy. The easiest way to make them is to prepare a breading station. Set up a station with one bowl filled with flour, another bowl with the batter, and a shallow third bowl with the breadcrumb mixture. Begin by dipping the rings first into the flour, and tapping off any excess flour. The second step is to dip the floured onion rings into the batter. Be sure to let any excess batter drip of the rings before the third step of placing them into the bread crumbs. Use your fingers to flip over the onion rings and press in the panko mixture so they're fully coated. Next the coated onion rings are ready to fry.
Frying
The best way to make delicious crispy onion rings is to fry them in a deep fryer. A deep fryer gives the best results. It's much easier to get a great result with at home deep fryer than with a large pot of oil because there is a thermometer on the deep fryer that regulates the temperature and keeps it even, so it doesn't become too hot or cool down too much. Deep fry onion rings in small batches so that the deep fryer isn't over crowded.
After the frying the onion rings in hot oil, remove them when they're gold brown and place them onto a few paper towels to absorb any excess oil and sprinkle them with a little salt while they're still hot.
Onion rings are best eaten as soon as they're ready.
Serve these crispy fried onion rings with your favourite dipping sauce like ketchup, barbecue sauce, fry sauce, or some mayo with a little hot sauce.
These are guaranteed to take your regular burger night -or any other meal, to a whole new level.
These are guaranteed to woo any guests you serve them to. They're definitely a crowd favorite. The combination of sweet onion flavor, and crispy batter and breadcrumb coating, with a little sprinkling of salt is truly the perfect onion ring. If you are an onion ring lover, you're guaranteed to love this panko onion ring recipe.
