These are a crowd pleaser and always go quickly at a party.  They’ll make a great addition to your appetizer selection.  They can be served hot or room temperature.  I know we’ll be making some and serving them this Christmas, or anytime.  They’re great as an alternative to the traditional cheese board, when you want an all in one bite, that’s easy to serve.

Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup wine
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry dough, thawed
  • 1/3 cup goats cheese

Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.
    2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet and saute the onion slices over low heat until softened. Add the brown sugar and cook 5 minutes more. Next add the wine and some salt and black pepper to taste, and continue simmering the onions on low stirring regularly for about 5 minutes more, until the onions are sticky and caramelized.
    3. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut the sheet into 16 equal squares. Use a knife to score small squares inside each piece, without cutting through the pastry to create a 1/4 inch border. Separate the pieces and transfer squares onto a parchment lined baking tray and cook for 10 minutes.
    4. Remove the pastry from the oven and use the back of a spoon to push down the centre of the pastry. Then fill each one with caramelised onion and about 1 teaspoon of goats cheese on top. Return them to the oven for another 10 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown. Serve hot or room temperature.
These appetizers are perfect for the holidays, and your guests are sure to love them.  They’re the perfect little bites.  Any goat cheese fan is sure to adore these.  We love the pairing of the textures of creamy goat cheese, sweet onions, and the flaky puff pastry crust.

More Options

To add a little more to these you do have the option of adding a light drizzle of honey right before serving, or topping them after their baked with a little fig jam, or even a little balsamic glaze over the top of the caramelized onion and goat cheese tart.
