Entertaining on a weeknight can be tricky, but this easy party is perfect for family and friends.  I’ve made it a little easier with some beautiful free printables you can print, cut out and hang up for a festive atmosphere.

For the backdrop to the pancake buffet, I used inexpensive tissue paper and twine to create some pretty tissue paper tassels. These are really simple to make, and have a big impact.

The cute little watercolor pancakes were made by my youngest daughter Maddie.  I love them.  You can download them here.  Just print them on card stock, cut them out, and create your own pancake garland.

For the table, we used maple syrup cans for vases.

I love that they have painted on labels, and such pretty pictures of little maple sugar shacks, and lots of forest trees.  The blue in the cans inspired the colour scheme of light blue for the party.  We kept the rest neutral with natural brown kraft paper and lots of white.

For the place settings, I used some cute denim napkins and the sweetest printable pancake jokes.

The printables help take this get together from a simple dinner to a party.  Even if you’re just making pancakes for your kids, I guarantee they’ll love the pancake joke printables we came up with.  You can download them here.

Along with the jokes, I made some mini tissue paper tassels to tie the whole look together.

I also made a batch of Pancake Sugar Cookies.  I’ll be sharing the recipe later this week.  They’re easy to make, and so, so cute for Pancake Day.  I added one to each place setting, and one of the little girls who loves sugar cookies was asking us “where are the sugar cookies?”  she thought they were actual pancakes, so I guess that was a good sign, lol.

We set up an easy, help-yourself, pancake buffet for dinner, complete with lots of fun and delicious pancake toppings.  We love this set-up for a party, since guests can help themselves and you can enjoy yourself too.

I used simple mason jars and offered different berries, along with some sprinkles, since it was a party.  I also made a little whipped cream.  And of course, we had to have lots of real maple syrup -we are Canadian after all.

I also had some more of the Pancake Sugar Cookies on the Pancake buffet.

Since it was dinner, we also fried up some bacon and sausages.  The perfect accompaniment to lots and lots of pancakes.

For drinks, I offered guests some orange juice, since it seems like the perfect accompaniment to pancakes.  And for the grown-ups, I picked up a bottle of sparkling wine, so we could turn our orange juice into mimosas.  Special Tuesday night treat, haha.

This little party was so much fun.  Whether you set up something like this, or just print out our pancake jokes and make your kids pancakes for dinner, I hope you’re feeling inspired!

Rock Climbing Gem Party

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

When my daughter Paige turned 12, she decided she’d like a rock climbing party to celebrate.  We had an amazing time rock climbing with her friends, and then invited them all back to our house for a “Paige Rocks” celebration.  We used the idea of rocks to inspire a rock/gem/jewel/geometric themed party.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

The party was amazing!  I didn’t want this post to get lost in all the amazing fall and Christmas posts the last few months, so I’ve been saving it until now.  I hope you love it as much as we did!

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

We started out at our local rock climbing place and the girls got to climb for a few hours together.  Paige loves rock climbing and had an amazing time getting to do it with all her friends.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

After the rock climbing was done, we headed back to our house with some tired, hungry and excited girls.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

We set up the dining room for our guests to enjoy some “rock” inspired treats.  (This was before the big dining room make-over, if you’re wondering why it looks so different now.)

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I made a lot of the decorations with my Cricut machine.  Including the paper 3-D shapes that we used throughout the party as decorations -you can find the free cut file for these here.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I adjusted the size a few times to make some bigger and smaller ones.

Each girl, had a special place setting waiting for them.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I used inexpensive muslin bags for the party favours, and customized them with each girl’s name, so they doubled as placards.  To make the bags, I used iron-on gold vinyl and cut it out with the Cricut machine.  They were really easy to make and the girls were very impressed.

Each bag was to hold a little gem necklace -which was the perfect little party favour.

I also used my Cricut to make the straw gems.  I embellished gold paper straws by gluing on a cut out gem.  I was able to buy an inexpensive gem cut file that had two layers, for a few dollars in my Cricut Design Space.  I cut the top layer out of glitter yardstick, and layered it over another piece of cardstock in the party colours.  These little gems turned out so well, I loved them and so did the girls.  I was so impressed with what my Cricut was able to do.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I used the same cut file to create some vinyl adhesives for my candles.  I used gold vinyl, and cut the top piece and then put several onto glass dollar store candles.  They looked amazing, and were very easy and inexpensive to make.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

On the table we also used lots of scattered rocks, gems and crystals.  We collected some rocks on our walks, and found some fun gems at the dollar store.  We also made some pretty crystals out of borax. We liked this tutorial.  We worked on them over about a week, and added some gold paint to some of them too.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

We also added some pretty pink flowers, and some geometric gold candle holders.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

Over in the entry way, I used a few more of the vinyl gems I cut out on the Cricut machine.  They looked great on the mirror, and easily peeled off after the party.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I also sewed some geometric bunting.  Again I used the Cricut and cut out some simple geometric shapes out of different colours of cardstock and in different sizes.  I used my sewing machine to sew them into a pretty garland –see my tutorial here.  I made a few and used some over the console table too.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I made the geometric shaped honey comb decorations, by cutting round ones before they were unfolded -I love how these turned out and they’re so simple to make.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

The main attraction of the party was the beautiful rock themed dessert table.  We had so much fun putting it together and the girls just loved it.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

The backdrop was made with a simple branch attached to the wall that we hung more of the geometric garland and shapes off of.  The vinyl wall decals were cut with the Cricut machine too.  I used the same gems and layered the vinyl with white on top and, pink and aqua the party colours underneath.  We also made “Paige Rocks” out of the vinyl.  These all looked amazing for the party, and were easy to remove afterward.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

The metal geometric shapes were some I used as Christmas decorations, but worked perfectly here.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

All the party desserts were rock themed, which was so much fun.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

The cake was made the week before –you can see how easy it was here, and I just put it in the freezer and took it out the morning of the party.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

Paige loved the succulents, so we incorporated the into the party flowers, and just added some pretty rock candy to the cake to tie it into the theme.  It turned out so, so pretty.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I served some fruit in cute little paper cups.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

The rock themed candy was pretty fun to find.  We had classic rock candy.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I also found this fun rock popping candy, that the kids thought was amazing.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

And to go with the gems, some candy rings.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

One of the prettiest treats of the day, a beautiful plate of donuts.  They sure looked great with their little gem pics!

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

Over on the other side of the table, more treats.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

We made regular rice crispy squares, and cut them into cubes and dipped half on a diagonal into coloured chocolate.  They were simple, looked great, and were so yummy.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

We also made some dirt pudding (chocolate pudding with crushed oreos) and topped them with candy rocks, and served them in little mason jars.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

I wanted to offer some chips so I picked up a party mix and served them in these sweet little takeout boxes.  I wanted them to match the party, so I used some more of the vinyl decals and added them to the boxes.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

We also made these agate slice rock lollipops.  We used this tutorial to make them out of crushed up candy.  They weren’t too hard to make, and looked amazing.  The tricky part was trying to find colours that we wanted and flavours that went together well.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

This party was a huge success.  If you’re considering something similar, I have one little bit of advise.  The rock climbing place also had a party room, and we considered renting it to keep things all in one place, but I’m so glad we didn’t use it, and set everything up at home.  Hosting part of the party at home meant that we could make it really, really special.  I could set up everything ahead of time, and the 15 min. drive back to our house was no problem at all.  The girls faces when they walked in and saw it all made it all completely worth while, that’s for sure, and I never would have had time to make it quite so magical if it wasn’t at home.

Rocking Climbing Gem/Jewel/Geometric Party -rock climbing party with diy gem decor, rock themed dessert table, and favour ideas

This is one of those times where the smile on the birthday girl’s face says it all.

Back To School Dinner 2016

Back to School Dinner: a wonderful family tradition of a special Back to School dinner to celebrate the first day of school and hear all about it.

Yesterday was the first day of school, and as is our tradition, we had a special Back To School Dinner to celebrate.

You can find last years Back to School dinner here, and the year before that here, for more inspiration.

Back to School Dinner: a wonderful family tradition of a special Back to School dinner to celebrate the first day of school and hear all about it.

This year, I went with a bit of a book page theme.  The table runner was made from some old books.  I ripped out some pages, and sewed them together on the sewing machine.  The book pages set the tone for a mainly black and white colour scheme.

The placards were some sweet library card inspired tags.

For the bottles of water, I used some cute numbered gift tags I picked up at Ikea.

And on the straws, some cute “school days” flags I made.

The table was really very simple.  I always think of apples when I think of back to school, so the simple centrepiece was just a line of fresh apples.  They smell so good!

In the background, I decorated the buffet with a back to school theme too.

In keeping with the book page theme, I made some pretty book page tassels.

The book page tassels were simple to make from some old books, and with some black and white washi tape.

It was fun to use my vintage globes and few other school supplies to set the tone.

We had pasta for dinner -a real favourite around here.  And for dessert, a few school inspired treats.

You can see how I made the Book Page Sugar Cookies and Marshmallow Pencil Treats here.

We traditionally have an apple dessert for this special dinner, and I had great plans for one this year.  But I used all the apples on the table and ran out of time, so I picked up some apple fritter donuts and decorated them with some book page pom pom picks.  I haven’t had an apple fritter in ages -boy were they yummy and so easy. 😉

We had a great time hearing all about the first day, from choosing a class pet (hermit crabs and fish are in the running) to not being able to find the washroom, to who they sat with on the bus.  It was a great family time, and one of our favourite traditions.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

This month there were lots of special occasions at our house and a few parties to celebrate them.  For our #YearofFeasting -where we have committed to host 12 parties in 12 months, this month we had a birthday party!  I shared 5 Tips to Create Pin-worthy Parties on a Budget earlier in the month to inspire you, and I put lots of those tips into practise when my youngest daughter Maddie decided on a Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party to celebrate turning nine!

We have been very fortunate and Maddie has enjoyed a cruise every winter for the last few years.  In fact, some of our happiest family memories have been created on board cruise ships, so it seemed like a fun theme for a party.

Our intention was to make our guests feel like they were getting on a cruise ship and taking a mini cruise, with some of our very favourite cruise ship activities as part of itinerary.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

I found some amazing free printables at Ian and Lola Designs that i just loved.  I used picmonkey.com to add text.  If you  don’t know this site, it’s great -easy to use and free, and will allow you to edit, and add text to images.  I used the large sign free printable and added text to make signs -like “Crusie Terminal” on the front door, and “Ship Boarding” for our little check in area.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

We sent guests a “ticket” invite, so when they arrived they had to sign in and get their sea pass, just like a real cruise.  My husband transformed our old sea pass cards into new ones for our party guests with a graphics program, complete with their names and the date of the party.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

At the sign in table they had to sign the registration sheet, and then they received their sea pass, which we hole punched and attached to a lanyard for them.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

As they signed in there was a ship photographer ready to snap a shot of them boarding -just like on a real cruise.  We set up a little backdrop of a net, and luggage, and made an anchor and life buoy out of cardboard -a quick and inexpensive project.  We asked our guests to pose with a hat -we picked up the captain and sailor hat at the party store and felt like they were the perfect props.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

After they boarded it was time for a welcome aboard drink.  We picked up a pina colada mix and made mini virgin pina coladas for them with fun little umbrellas, which helped get everyone in the cruise mood.

We decorated our living room with a few nautical touches and turned it into the “Sandbar Lounge”.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

Our first activity at sea was a napkin folding class.  On the cruises we’ve been on there are always fun little classes on sea days.  On the cruise your waiter is often an expert at napkin folding and loves to show the kids his or her tricks of the trade, and also the room steward often leaves amazing towel animals on your bed at night.  Cruising has come to mean fancy napkins and fancy towel folding for us.  So, when the classes are offered, Maddie enjoys going and learning how to do it too.  One time, we were given these great instruction sheets, which Maddie still had so we just photocopied for the party.

Napkin folding instructions

Maddie had a great time being the napkin folding instructor and teaching all her little friends, and grandparents how to fold the perfect napkin.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

After napkin folding class it was time for a fancy lunch in the main dining room.  Fancy lunches and dinners have become a real highlight of cruising for us.  In the early years the kids ordered from the kids menus and we had to bring electronics to keep them entertained.  Now, the girls are becoming real foodies, and have really enjoyed trying out new things and ordering off of the adult menu sometimes.  Maddie had a lot of fun coming up with her three course menu -which included lots of favourites from cruising.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

My husband Roland and friend Heather were the waiters and I was the chef for the afternoon.  It was a lot of fun preparing a kid-friendly, but fancy meal.  Just like on the ship, you could even order two desserts.

I also made fun name tags for the “staff” with our names, and the countries we were from, just like on the real ship.  And we all wore our black and white “uniform”.

Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday Party: Great kids party theme where your guests sail away for the day with a house turned cruise ship!

After lunch our guests headed back to the Sandbar Lounge for karaoke.  On our last cruise, with great friends of ours, there was family karaoke one night, and our girls were brave enough to give it a try.  It was so much fun, and seemed like the perfect way to end the cruise party.  Our guests were a little shy, but we still had a lot of fun.

We sent our guest home with a little sea themed loot bag -there were lifesavers, gold fish crackers, cracker jacks, and chips ahoy cookies.  I made a fun little label for our “ships ahoy” cookies.

We had a great time celebrating our girl with her own little cruise.

With a special Cruise Themed Nautical Birthday, life really is a party!
