Breakfast for dinner is one of those ideas that never gets old. There's something about serving pancakes and eggs at 7pm that feels like a delicious little act of rebellion and your guests will love you for it. But what if you took the concept further? What if instead of a casual weeknight meal, you turned breakfast for dinner into a proper dinner party complete with candlelight, a crepe bar, a mimosa bar, and a dining table dressed like a bed?
That's exactly what I did for our Breakfast Under the Stars brinner party and it was one of the most fun gatherings I've ever hosted. Guests arrived in their coziest pajamas, found their names on personalized sleep mask place cards, and sat down under a cloud and star installation to yogurt parfaits, fresh baked croissants, quiche, and the most beautiful crepe bar.
Whether you're planning a girls night, a birthday celebration, or just looking for a dinner party idea that breaks all the rules in the best possible way, a breakfast for dinner party might be exactly what your people need.

What Is a Breakfast for Dinner Party?

A breakfast for dinner party is exactly what it sounds like. You invite your guests over for a proper sit down dinner and serve breakfast food instead. It's one of those ideas that sounds simple but lands as genuinely memorable because nobody sees it coming. There's something about the unexpected combination of candlelight and crepes, mimosas and quiche, that makes everyone feel like they're in on a delightful secret.
Our version took the concept a step further. We asked guests to come in their pajamas, dressed the dining table like a bed with a vintage quilt and pillows, and hung a cloud and star installation overhead so the whole room felt like dining under a night sky. The result was one of the most joyful and distinctive dinner parties we've ever hosted. Sometimes the best gatherings are the ones that break all the rules.
Setting the Scene
The heart of this party is the table and it starts with a quilt. Instead of a traditional tablecloth we used a vintage star pattern quilt, tucked a pillow at one end to suggest a headboard, and suddenly the dining table looked like a bed. It sounds simple and it absolutely is, but the effect when guests walk in is genuinely magical.

Around the room we carried the star and cloud theme through in smaller details. Star lights glowed on the full length mirror in the entryway so guests were greeted by the theme the moment they walked through the door. Gold star garland threaded through the glass vase candle holders on the table connected the installation above to the table below. Small vases of baby's breath with a few star picks tucked in on the crepe bar echoed the cloud theme in a subtle and cottagecore way.
For candles we used pillar candles inside tall glass cylinder vases down the center of the table. This protects the quilt from any wax drips and the glass catches and amplifies the candlelight beautifully.

How to Make a DIY Cloud Light Installation
The cloud installation is the wow moment of this party and it's much simpler to make than it looks. Here's exactly how we did it.

Here's what we used:
- 1 lb. polyfill batting
- gold star garland, two sizes
- clear fishing line
- free printable crescent moon
- gold glitter
To make the cloud, carefully remove the batting from the bag and unfold it into one large piece rather than pulling it apart. Drape it over the top of your chandelier and gently fluff and shape it around the fixture until it forms a soft cloud shape. We found we didn't need any fishing wire to secure it but you can add some for extra reinforcement if needed.
Next hang your stars. Weave the gold star garland through the chandelier letting them hang down at various lengths.
Finally print the two sided moon on card stock (we used cream colored card stock) and add some gold glitter highlights. Use the clear fishing line to hang it at one end at a slightly lower height than the stars.

One important note before you start: make sure your light bulbs are LED or another cool burning option. We tested ours before the diy to confirm they don't generate heat near the batting. Always stay in the room when the installation is lit.
The whole project takes about an hour and is really inexpensive. Look for batting at the craft store or fabric store and use a coupon for purchase. 😉 Our light is on a dimmer, and the effect of the softly lit cloud at night is absolutely magical.
Pajama Party Dress Code

Part of what makes this party so fun is the dress code. Asking adults to come in their pajamas sets the tone immediately. This is going to be a relaxed, joyful, anything goes kind of evening. Definitely not your traditional stuffy dinner party! And people absolutely loved it.
Don't overthink the pajama request in your invitation. We included it right on our free printable invitation which you can download below.
Breakfast for Dinner Party Menu
The menu is where this party really earns its name. We served a full three course dinner, every dish breakfast inspired, and guests were genuinely delighted from start to finish.
The Appetizer
I wanted to start with a served appetizer course. It helped set the dinner party tone, and establish that this wasn't just a regular breakfast, but a real dinner party.

We started with individual yogurt parfaits served in small vintage footed glass bowls. Each one had a layer of vanilla Greek yogurt, homemade crunchy granola, a spoonful of strawberry rhubarb compote, a sprinkle of gold star sprinkles, and a fresh pansy on top. It was the prettiest little first course and the perfect light starter before a generous main. You can find our Strawberry Rhubarb Compote recipe here.
The Main Course
The main course was served family style and covered every breakfast classic we love. We made a hashbrown casserole, quiche, bacon and sausage, and fresh baked croissants served with star shaped butter pats.

The croissants were the frozen, unbaked kind. They were the perfect delicious addition, without having to worry about a bakery run on the day of the party. And added bonus, the whole house smelled incredible when guests arrived. I used a star shaped ice cube tray and soft butter pressed in with an offset spatula, then I popped the butter into the freezer to set. These were such a fun and easy way to carry our star theme into the main course. These little whimsical touches are my favorite.
The Crepe Bar

Instead of a traditional dessert we set up a full crepe bar on the buffet, which fit our breakfast theme perfectly. We made both vanilla and chocolate crepes ahead of time and reheated them in the microwave just before serving. This worked really perfectly for entertaining. You could of course cook them fresh if you prefer.
Guests built their own crepes with
- vanilla custard,
- whipped cream
- Nutella
- maple syrup
- caramel sauce
- chocolate sauce
- vanilla ice cream
- sauteed apples
- fresh strawberries
- raspberries
- bananas
- toasted slivered almonds

We also added piped chocolate stars as a little nod to the party theme. You can find our full Crepe Bar post and our Sweet Crepe Recipe for everything you need to recreate it.

Make Ahead Tips
The caramel sauce and chocolate sauce can both be made a day or two ahead and refrigerated. The crepes themselves can be made the day before, stacked, wrapped, and refrigerated then reheated beautifully in the microwave. The strawberry rhubarb compote keeps in the fridge for up to two weeks. The granola can be made well ahead. On party day the only things that need active cooking are the hashbrown casserole, quiche, bacon, sausage, and the croissants in the oven. You can make the hashbrown casserole and quiche earlier in the day and bake or reheat for dinner.
The Mimosa Bar
No breakfast for dinner party is complete without a mimosa bar and ours was one of the prettiest parts of the whole setup. We set it up on the console table near the entryway so guests could pour a welcome drink the moment they arrived.

Behind the bar we hung a flower curtain as a backdrop. We tied faux flowers and sprigs of fresh baby's breath onto clear fishing line so they appear to float against the wall. It's one of those details that looks elaborate but comes together surprisingly quickly and the effect in photos is really beautiful. The soft pink and white blooms against the white wall created the perfect backdrop.

We used a collection of swing top glass bottles to serve the juices, each one labeled with a clear acrylic tag tied on with a little pastel ribbon bow. Look for something like this at the thrift store. The bottles are so beautiful filled with juice and lined up together.

The colors range from deep pink strawberry through blush peach through golden orange and tropical yellow pineapple and mango. We offered six juice options in total:
- orange
- peach
- strawberry
- mango
- pineapple
- grapefruit
For glassware we used champagne flutes with small pastel ribbon bows tied around the stems to dress them up for the occasion. The prosecco chilled in a beautiful tarnished vintage silver ice bucket which anchored the whole bar.

The finishing touch was floating a fresh pansy in each coupe. It takes about ten seconds and looks absolutely stunning.
We also made sure to have options for non drinkers. A sparkling non alcoholic wine and a sparkling white grape juice looked identical to the prosecco in the glasses and nobody felt like an afterthought.

You can find our full Mimosa Bar post with everything you need to recreate it including tips for the garnishes, how much juice to buy, and non alcoholic options.
After Dinner Mints and Sleepy Time Tea
As the evening wound down and the crepe bar was well and truly demolished, we brought out two final details that perfectly closed the loop on the whole breakfast theme.
The first was a tray of chocolate after dinner mints shaped like little fried eggs. White chocolate formed the egg white, a yellow candy the yolk, and pretzel sticks the bacon alongside. They were peppermint flavored which made them a proper after dinner mint and genuinely delicious. Guests were completely charmed by them. These would be an adorable party favor in little cello bags tied with a ribbon too.

The second was Sleepy Time tea. Because what else do you serve at a pajama party when the candles are burning low and everyone is happily full and lingering? It was the most perfect and on theme way to end the evening and it got a big laugh when we brought it out.
Sometimes the smallest details land the hardest.
Pajama Party Favors and Place Cards
We wanted the party favors to do double duty and they absolutely delivered. Instead of traditional place cards we used personalized sleep masks at each setting, one for every guest with their name added using Cricut iron-on vinyl.
The sleep masks we found at Dollarama of all places and they were the most perfect accidental detail of the whole party. They're shaped like little clouds. Cloud sleep masks under our beautiful cloud light felt like the universe was on our side.

Each mask was laid on the plate when guests arrived so the first thing they saw when they sat down was their name on a little cloud. It immediately set the tone of cozy, playful, and a little bit magical. And at the end of the night everyone took their mask home as a memento of the evening.

How to make personalized sleep mask place cards:
Finding cloud shaped sleep masks at a dollar store is the dream but any plain satin sleep mask works beautifully. We used our Cricut to cut names in iron on vinyl and pressed them onto each mask. The whole project took about an hour for eight masks and the results look so polished and personal. Don't own a Cricut? Did you know that lots of local libraries with maker spaces have them available to use in the library for free?

Breakfast for Dinner Party Conversation Starters
One of our favorite things to do at a dinner party is ask a table question. I love a good conversation starter that gets everyone talking and creates a real moment of connection. For this party we actually had two, but they had something in common. So much of this party was about the flip. We had breakfast for dinner. We wore pjs to a dinner party instead of dressing up. We were turned inside into a night under the stars. So for our questions, we used this theme of flipping things on their head.

The Appetizer Question
As guests settled in with their yogurt parfaits and mimosas we asked a lighthearted one to get things going. What is a food combination that sounds wrong but is actually amazing?
The answers were hilarious. Everyone had one and nobody could agree on which was the most bizarre. It was the perfect warm up for the evening.
The Dessert Question
By the time we reached the crepe bar the candles had burned down a little, everyone was relaxed and happy, and it felt like the right moment for something a little deeper. We asked: when did something going wrong in your life turn out to be exactly right?
The table got quiet for just a moment and then the stories started. People talked about career changes they didn't choose, relationships that ended and led somewhere better, moves to new cities, unexpected turns that changed everything. It was one of those conversations you don't forget.
That's what a table question can do when the timing is right. The food brings people together but the conversation is what makes the evening memorable.

Breakfast Under the Stars Playlist
Every good party needs a soundtrack and this one called for something dreamy, romantic, and a little bit timeless. We leaned into the night sky theme and built a playlist full of moon and stars songs, classic jazz standards, and a few contemporary favorites that all share that same magical nocturnal feeling. And since we had an accidental French flair -croissants, quiche, crepes, there was a little French on the playlist for good measure too. 😉
Think Frank Sinatra and Fly Me to the Moon floating through a candlelit room while your guests sit under a glowing cloud in their pajamas eating crepes. It's exactly as wonderful as it sounds.
You can find the full Night Time playlist if you want to use it for your own gathering.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best breakfast for dinner party menus mix savory and sweet breakfast classics served in a proper dinner party format. We served a yogurt parfait appetizer, a main course of quiche, hashbrown casserole, bacon, sausage, and fresh baked croissants, and finished with a full crepe bar complete with ice cream and all the toppings. The key is treating breakfast food with the same care and intention you'd bring to any dinner party menu.
A mimosa bar is the perfect drink station for a breakfast for dinner party. We offered six juice options, sparkling wine chilling in a silver ice bucket, and sparkling non alcoholic options so every guest felt included. You can find our full Mimosa Bar post [link] for everything you need to set one up. And with dessert along, sleepy time tea.
They really do and they love it! Nobody hesitated and everyone arrived in the most beautiful soft pajamas, and some even brought their slippers and teddy bear! It immediately sets a relaxed and joyful tone for the whole evening.
Quite a lot of this menu can be made ahead which is one of the reasons we love it for entertaining. The crepes can be made the day before and reheated in the microwave. The caramel and chocolate sauces keep in the fridge for several days. The strawberry rhubarb compote keeps for up to two weeks. On party day you really only need to bake the croissants, cook the quiche and hashbrown casserole, and fry the bacon and sausage.
Not at all! A pancakes and pajamas party is a popular kids birthday party theme but the concept translates beautifully to adults. Our version is a proper sit down dinner party with an elevated menu, a mimosa bar, and thoughtful details like personalized sleep mask place cards and a cloud and star installation. It's decidedly grown up, just with a very fun dress code. It's also great for intergenerational entertaining -think families with kids, teens, grandparents.
A night sky theme works beautifully with the breakfast for dinner concept because it leans into the day and night flip. We used a cloud and star installation over the dining table, a quilt as a tablecloth to make the table look like a bed, and carried the moon and stars theme through in smaller details like star shaped butter pats, piped chocolate stars on the crepe bar, and gold star sprinkles on the yogurt parfaits.
