We've combined modern boho style with a budget-friendly DIY to make the prettiest and easiest boho Christmas wreath. Instead of a traditional round evergreen wreath, or even a boho-inspired gold hoop wreath, we've gone with an asymmetrical birch branch. We love that it's unique, has so many boho materials like natural birch, greens, wood beads, pom poms and tassels and still feels festive and perfect for the holidays. But you can also change out the greens to flowers for spring, or fall leaves in autumn and add pom poms in the pastels or oranges to make this stunning wreath perfect for any season. And it's quick and easy to create, and very inexpensive too.

What You'll Need
The beauty of this project is how flexible it is. You can forage, thrift, or buy new depending on your budget and time.
Materials
- Birch Branch (2 feet long) -Forage in the great outdoors, find at craft stores ($3-5), or order online.
- Twine or Hemp Cord -About 2 feet for hanging loops. Natural jute works perfectly.
- Floral Wire -About 12 inches to attach greens. Green or brown blends best.
- Fresh or Faux Greens -We used fresh white pine. Fresh lasts weeks and smells amazing. Faux means your wreath lasts forever. For spring, swap to flowers. For fall, try preserved leaves.
- Yarn -Deep red, white, and black for Christmas. Raid your stash for scraps or thrift check out your local thrift store. Medium weight works best.
- Wooden Beads -10-12 beads. We used natural wood, and spray painted a few white, black, and gold. Look for beads with holes large enough to thread yarn through. These were an upcycle from an old beaded seat cover, found at the thrift store.
Tools
- Sharp scissors
- Pom pom maker or cardboard (1 inch tall)

How to Make a Boho Christmas Wreath
Step 1: Create Hanging Loops
Cut your branch to 2 feet. Position the most attractive bark side to face forward. Tie a piece of twine to each end of the branch.

Step 2: Attach Fresh Greens
Position your greens about one-third from one end. Wrap floral wire tightly around both greens and branch several times. Trim excess wire and tuck behind greens.

Step 4: Make Your Pom Poms and Tassels
You'll make three pom poms total.
Using Cardboard: Wrap yarn around 1-inch tall cardboard 50-60 times. Slide a 12-inch piece of yarn under all wraps on one side and tie very tightly (this becomes your hanging tail). Cut the wraps on the opposite side. Remove cardboard, fluff, and trim into a ball shape.
Using a Pom Pom Maker: Follow your tool's instructions.
Make four tassels. Wrap yarn around 2.5-inch cardboard 30-40 times. Slide a 12-inch yarn piece under wraps at the top and tie tightly (your hanging tail). Cut wraps at bottom. Wrap another piece of yarn 1 inch from top to create the tassel neck. Trim bottom evenly.

Step 6: Add Wooden Beads
Thread beads onto the hanging strands of two tassels before attaching. Mix natural wood, white, black, and one gold bead.

Step 7: Attach Everything
Using the yarn tails, tie all pom poms and tassels to the branch near the greens (about one-third from the end). Layer at different heights for dimension. Trim excess yarn.
Expert Tips
- Yarn Weight Matters -Medium weight creates pom poms with good body. Too thin looks sparse, too thick is hard to work with.
- Fresh Green Longevity -Fresh evergreens last weeks outdoors in cold weather, 2-3 weeks indoors. Spritz with water to extend life or simply replace mid-season.
- Outdoor Safe -This wreath handles typical winter weather beautifully. For very wet climates, place on a covered porch.
Seasonal Variations
Change the greens and pom pom colors to use this wreath year-round:
- Traditional Christmas -Red, white, black with evergreens (what we made)
- Winter Neutrals -Cream, tan, gray with eucalyptus
- Spring Pastels -Pink, lavender, mint with fresh flowers
- Fall Warm Tones -Orange, rust, brown with preserved leaves
- Summer Brights -Coral, turquoise, yellow with tropical leaves or pampas
The birch branch base stays the same. You're only swapping colors and botanicals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Faux greens last forever, or skip them entirely for a minimalist look. Dried flowers or pampas grass also work beautifully.
About 20 minutes total. Making the 3 pom poms and 4 tassels takes roughly 15 minutes once you learn the technique.
Craft stores sell them, also look at big box stores and hardware stores that sell fresh greens for the holidays. You can also forge on nature walks where permitted, or order online.
Absolutely! Change the greens and yarn colors seasonally. The birch base works all year. Many people make several color sets and swap them out.

Modern Boho Christmas Wreath
Equipment
- Pom Pom maker
Materials
- birch branch -about 2'
- twine
- wire
- fresh greens
- yarn -deep red white, and black
- wooden beads
Instructions
- Start by tying some twine to each end of your birch branch for hanging.
- Add some Christmas greens -either fresh or faux with some wire. I used some fresh white pine for mine.
- Make some pom poms and tassels with some yarn, using a pom pom maker or a piece of cardboard. To make the pom pom with cardboard, wrap yarn around a rectangle of cardboard that's about 1 inch tall. Tie a longer piece of yarn around the middle of the wrapped strands on one side, and cut the wrapped yarn in the center on the opposite side that it's tied. Then use your scissors to trim the pom pom into a ball shape. To make a tassel, wrap yarn around a 2 ½ inch piece of cardboard. Tie the wrapped yarn at the top with a long piece of yarn. Cut the wrapped yarn at the bottom. Then tie another piece about 1 inch from the top, around all the yarn pieces. Trim the bottom so that it's even. I used black and white, and a little red to make it Christmas-y. There are three pom poms on mine, along with 4 tassels.
- I also added a few wooden beads to the 2 of the tassels in natural wood, white, black and one gold for a little Christmas sparkle. You could make these in any colours to match the rest of your Christmas decor. If you didn't want to add pom poms and tassels, you could try adding pinecones, berries, or bells with some hot glue, and tie on a traditional ribbon.
- Attach the pom poms and tassels to your wreath with yarn or wire, about ⅓ of the way from the end of the birch branch.
Notes
Winter Neutrals - Cream, tan, gray with eucalyptus
Spring Pastels - Pink, lavender, mint with fresh flowers
Fall Warm Tones - Orange, rust, brown with preserved leaves
Summer Brights - Coral, turquoise, yellow with tropical leaves or pampas
