Today I want to share the recipe for the easy heart shaped hamburger buns. We made our homemade heart shaped hamburger buns in our bread maker (but you can also make them without) and heart shaped hamburger patties for a delicious Valentine's Day.
Why We Love This Recipe
- Everyone loves a hamburger so it's perfect for celebrating -with kids, family, girlfriends or a significant other.
- Nothing says love like heart shaped food.
- Burgers and these heart shaped buns are easy to make and look and taste fantastic.
Use Your Bread Machine Or Make By Hand
These buns are really easy to make in a bread machine -just add the ingredients and set to the dough setting. Come back in 2 hours and your dough is ready to form into hearts. These are super simple and pretty much foolproof. But you can also make them by hand if you don't have a bread maker, and they're still pretty easy to put together.
They do take a little while to make, whether by hand or in the bread machine. So make sure you give yourself enough time. Maybe start the process in the morning if you can. They take about 3 hours to complete, plus cooling. And they smell amazing as you're baking them.
If you'd like to make the heart shaped burger buns without a bread machine then follow the instructions in the recipe below.
How To Make Heart Shaped Hamburgers
1. If you are using a bread machine, layer all the ingredients into the bread maker. Starting with the butter, then warm water, sugar, 1 egg and salt. Next in the flour and lastly add the yeast. It's important to add the ingredients in order. And do not mix. Set your bread maker to the "dough" setting.
If you are making your dough by hand, in a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1 cup of warm water. Let sit for about 10 minutes, until the mixture is foamy. Add in the butter, sugar, 1 egg, salt, and flour. Mix by hand or in a stand mixer until the dough comes together. If using a stand mixer with a dough hook, continue until the dough is smooth and elastic. If mixing by hand, turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a large bowl, sprayed with oil, turning once to coat the top and cover with plastic wrap. Place it in a warm place to rise until it's doubled in size, about 1.5 hours.
2. When your dough is finished, turn it out onto a floured surface and knead to remove any air bubbles. Then divide your dough into 4 oz. pieces, it make 7 buns.
Shape each piece of dough into a ball, then make into a tear drop shape or chicken drumstick shape with your hands. Cut a slit in the larger side, and turn the cut sides down to the parchment to form your heart shape. Flatten slightly with the palm of your hand.
Place the heart shaped buns on a parchment lined baking sheet and cover them with a clean tea towel to rise. They should double in size. It takes about 30 minutes.
3. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Mix the remaining egg with 2 tablespoons of warm water, and whisk together. Brush the buns with the egg mixture before baking.
4. Cook for 20 minutes or until the hamburger buns are golden brown and sound hollow inside when taped on the bottom. Cool before slicing.
5. To make the hamburger patties combine the ground beef with packages of onion soup mix. Form into 7 heart shaped patties about the same size or slightly larger than the heart shaped burger buns. The patties will shrink slightly as they cook.
6. Cook the hamburger patties in a frying pan over medium heat, flipping halfway through. Add cheese slices for cheeseburgers.
7. Cut the cooled buns in half and top with your heart shaped burger and toppings of your choice.
