Remember Jell-o Pudding Pops?  Yes, I'm a child of the 80's. I thought it would be fun to make some homemade pudding pops at home in some really fun flavours like s'more, banana, chocolate, peaches and cream, and pina colada.  Classic pudding pops are basically frozen pudding.  The original jello pudding pops  were sold in the freezer section.  They were a similar to fudge pops, or chocolate popsicles, but made with jello pudding, and they came in a bunch of different flavors.  You can no longer buy pudding pops, so we came up with our own homemade version.  With just a few a few basic ingredients, you can turn your favourite pudding into homemade popsicles.  It's such an easy way to make great frozen treats.  This is sure to become one of your favorite kid friendly recipes.

I served them at the end of a summery dinner, as the perfect sweet ending. They're also the perfect snack on a hot day.  Kids of all ages will love them.  They're a great easy recipe for the whole family to enjoy on warm summer days.

Pudding Pop Molds

We made our pudding pops in the 3 oz. paper dixie cups, and they are the perfect size for a kid size treat, or sampling a few different flavours. ;). For our dinner party dessert we served a sampling of 3 different flavors for each plate.  Fill each of the small paper cups with the pudding mixture and then add wooden popsicle sticks.  The pudding is thick enough to hold the pop sticks upright in the little cups.  I also found it helpful, if you're making more than one flavor at once to write the flavor name on each popsicle stick with a sharpie at the top, before inserting it.  You can also use silicon popsicle molds, or ice pop molds if you have them, or even ice cube trays with small plastic spoons in each one.

Basic Pudding Pop Recipe

The basic recipe for making homemade pudding pops uses just a few simple ingredients.   To make them, combine 1 package of pudding mix made following the directions on the box with 1 small carton of heavy cream that has been whipped.  You fold these into each other and then freeze them into popsicles. You can also use cool whip, but we prefer the version made with real whipped cream.  They're delicious made just this way in a classic vanilla pudding pops or chocolate pudding pops flavour.  But, you can make so many variations to this basic recipe by changing the pudding flavor and adding in some fun add-ins and optional ingredients and making a whole variety of flavors.  Look for pudding in flavors at grocery store, like white chocolate, banana, cheesecake, pistachio, oreo cookies and cream, butterscotch, and coconut.

Favourite Add-Ins

We had so much fun coming up with some fun combinations for our own custom flavors.  Once you've selected a your flavor of instant pudding mix, you can have fun with some add-ins to enhance the flavor.  Fresh fruit is a great choice, you might also like to try different candy, or cookie crumbs.
