Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Garlic butter crostini and pesto take this caprese appetizer to the next level.
  • The ladybug presentation makes it a showstopper for spring and garden parties.
  • Simple, classic ingredients found at any grocery store.
  • A fun project to do with kids who love anything cute.
  • Ready in under 30 minutes from start to finish

Caprese is a classic for a reason, but I wanted to give it a fun seasonal twist for our Garden Club luncheon. Starting with garlic butter crostini and a layer of pesto instead of plain bread already makes it more flavorful, but turning the cherry tomatoes into little ladybugs with balsamic glaze spots and an olive head is what makes this appetizer so much fun. They were one of the prettiest things on our table and disappeared very quickly.

What Is Ladybug Caprese Bruschetta?

Ladybug caprese bruschetta is a fun twist on classic caprese bruschetta. Garlic butter crostini are spread with pesto and topped with fresh mozzarella, then finished with a cherry tomato cut to look like a ladybug, complete with a black olive head and balsamic glaze spots for the wings. It has an adorable presentation that makes it perfect for spring and garden parties.

But these aren't just cute, they taste great too. The garlic butter crostini base adds so much flavor and crunch, and combined with the pesto, fresh mozzarella, and tomato you get all the classic caprese flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

Full measurements in the recipe card.

Ingredients for ladybug caprese bruschetta including cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, olives, basil, pesto, butter, and a baguette.
  • Baguette or crusty bread  sliced into rounds for the crostini base
  • Butter -softened, for the garlic butter
  • Garlic -fresh minced garlic gives the best flavor
  • Pesto -store-bought or homemade both work well
  • Fresh Mozzarella -small balls (ciliegine) sliced
  • Cherry Tomatoes  look for ones that are roughly the same size for consistent ladybugs
  • Black Olives -for the ladybug heads, pitted is best
  • Balsamic Glaze -we made ladybug spots with balsamic glaze, this holds its shape better than straight balsamic vinegar
  • Fresh basil -for our little ladybugs to rest on like a leaf, but also to add fresh basil flavor

Variations

  • Balsamic Drizzle Base -If you don't have balsamic glaze, simmer balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan until it thickens slightly. It will firm up more as it cools.
  • Different Bread -A French baguette works beautifully, but any crusty bread or even toasted ciabatta slices work well too.
  • Add Prosciutto -For a heartier appetizer, add a small piece of prosciutto under the mozzarella.
  • Make it Vegan -Use a plant-based mozzarella alternative and a dairy-free pesto.
  • Skip the Ladybugs -If you are short on time, simply top with halved cherry tomatoes for a classic caprese bruschetta without the ladybug detail.

How To Make Ladybug Caprese Bruschetta

Garlic butter mixed in a bowl beside sliced baguette ready for toasting.
  1. Step 1: Make the garlic butter crostini.
Combine softened butter with minced garlic. Slice your baguette into rounds and spread each slice with the garlic butter. Toast in the oven until golden and crisp on the edges.

  1. Step 2: Add the pesto, mozzarella, and basil.
While the bread is still warm, spread a thin layer of pesto over each crostini. Top with a piece of fresh mozzarella, then a small basil leaf.

  1. Step 3: Make the ladybug bodies.
Cut a small slice off the bottom of each cherry tomato so it sits flat, then slice it in half from top to bottom. Pat the cut side dry with a paper towel so the balsamic spots stick better. Place each half cut-side down on top of the basil. Cut a small piece of black olive for the head and place it at one end of the tomato.

  1. Step 4: Add the spots and serve.
Use the tip of a balsamic glaze bottle to add small dots along the back of the tomato for the ladybug spots. A toothpick works too, but the dots end up quite small and don't add much flavor. If you go that route, add a small dot of balsamic glaze underneath the basil leaf as well so you still get that flavor in every bite. Serve immediately while the crostini are still crisp.

Expert Tips

  • Choose small, similar-sized cherry tomatoes -This makes it easier to get uniform ladybugs and a more polished look across the whole platter.
  • Pat the tomatoes dry -Moisture on the tomato can cause the balsamic spots to slide instead of staying put.
  • Toast the bread just before assembling -This keeps the crostini crisp under the toppings. If it sits too long after assembly the bread can soften.
  • Use a fine-tip balsamic glaze bottle -This gives you the most control for small, neat dots.
  • Make your ladybugs ahead of time -The bread needs to be toasted right before serving, but you can preassemble your slice of mozzarella, topped with a basil leaf, and ladybug ahead of time. To assemble, toast your bread, add the pesto, then add your preassembled ladybug stack and you're ready to serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make ladybug caprese bruschetta ahead of time?

These are best assembled just before serving. The crostini stay crispiest when toasted close to serving time. You can prep components ahead: make the garlic butter, make your stacks of mozzarella slices, basil leaves, tomato and olive, and have everything ready to assemble quickly when guests arrive.

What can I use instead of balsamic glaze?

If you don't have balsamic glaze on hand, simmer balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan over low heat until it reduces and thickens slightly. It will continue to thicken as it cools.

Can I make this recipe without the ladybug design?

Yes! Simply top your crostini with tomato slices for a classic caprese bruschetta. The garlic butter crostini and pesto base still make it special even without the ladybug detail. Top with a drizzle of balsamic glaze instead of spots.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices baguette
  • 2 tablespoons butter softened
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 8 teaspoons pesto
  • 3 balls fresh mozzarella sliced
  • 4 cherry tomatoes
  • 2 black olives pitted
  • 8 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic glaze

Instructions

  • Make the garlic butter crostini. Combine softened butter with minced garlic. Slice your baguette into rounds and spread each slice with the garlic butter. Toast in the oven until golden and crisp on the edges.
2 tablespoons butter, 1 clove garlic, 8 slices baguette
  • Add the pesto, mozzarella, and basil. While the bread is still warm, spread a thin layer of pesto over each crostini. Top with a slice of fresh mozzarella, then a basil leaf.
8 teaspoons pesto, 3 balls fresh mozzarella , 8 fresh basil leaves
  • Make the ladybug bodies. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half. Make sure to pat the tomato dry with a paper towel so the balsamic spots stick better. Place each half cut-side down on top of the basil. Cut the black olives into quarters to make the ladybug heads.
4 cherry tomatoes, 2 black olives
  • Add the spots and serve. Use the tip of a balsamic glaze bottle to add small dots on the tomato for the ladybug spots. Serve immediately while the crostini are still crisp.
    1 teaspoon balsamic glaze

Notes

  • When slicing mozzarella balls, the first and last slices are usually too small to use. You'll get about 3 usable slices per ball, so plan on 3 balls for 8 pieces.
  • Choose small, similar-sized cherry tomatoes for the most uniform ladybugs.
  • Pat the tomatoes dry before adding the balsamic spots so they stick better.
  • Toast the bread just before assembling for the crispiest results.
  • Prep all your components ahead and assemble just before serving.
