Canada Day Chocolate Bark

It’s great for any Canadian themed party or dessert table, or a snack at a party.  I loved including it as one of many Canada Day desserts at this party.  Check out the whole Canada Day dessert table full of classic Canadian desserts for lots more Canada Day dessert ideas that you'll love.

Party Favor or Hostess Gift

I’ve also packaged some up in clear cello bags tied with some red ribbon for the perfect little hostess gift or party favour for your Canada themed party or Canada day celebration.  I love using fun desserts like this for wishing anyone a happy Canada Day!

Chocolate Bark

Chocolate bark is a classic dessert that's easy to make and so delicious.  It's traditionally made with regular milk chocolate and filled with things like candy, dried fruits and nuts.  For Canada day we wanted to make in one of our red and white desserts, so we used red and white chocolate melting wafers.  Look for these in the baking section of the craft store, or at the bulk food store.  Chocolate bark is one of my favorite tasty recipes that you can make for any occasion and guests always love it.

Red and White Add-ins

Chocolate bark usually has lots of fun add-ins added to the chocolate and for Canada day we wanted to stick to red and white .  While we were at the bulk store we also looked for any red and white sprinkles or Canada day themed sprinkles.  We also found special red and white M&Ms for Canada day and they were the perfect addition.  Adding candy and sprinkles was such a fun way to add a patriotic touch.  If you wanted to you could also use red and white dried fruit and nuts like dried cranberries, cherries, or strawberries and almonds for your festive treats.

Melting The Chocolate

Take care when you're melting the chocolate to make your chocolate bark.  White chocolate especially has a tendency to burn easily if you try and melt it too high of a heat.  If you are using the microwave to melt your chocolate be sure to use only half power, and check your chocolate every 30 seconds, giving it a stir, and then adding more time if needed.

You can also melt the chocolate in a double boiler,  It gives a more even, lower heat and is perfect for melting white chocolate without burning it on the bottom.

If you do overcook the chocolate it will seize up, and remain lumpy no matter how much you microwave it.  It will sometimes turn brown and look burnt also.  If this happens you will have to throw it away and begin again.

If you find your chocolate is too think and not runny enough to work with easily, you can add a small amount, of vegetable shortening to the melting chocolate to make it more runny.  Start with a ½ teaspoon of vegetable shortening at a time until it is runny and smooth.  Never ever try to add water to the chocolate.  It will not combine with the chocolate and will cause the chocolate to seize.

Store your Canada chocolate bark in an airtight container at room temperature.  Be sure to keep it out of the sun so that it doesn't melt at your party this long weekend.

I hope you’re planning something special for Canada Day this year.  This easy treat is such a delicious recipe and sure to impress your guests.  It's the perfect dessert for first time bakers or children to help with because it's so simple to make and great addition to your Canada Day festivities.
