Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • These are all the flavors of fall, any pumpkin spice lovers will adore these.
  • These blondies have a great dense and chewy texture.
  • The fluffy sweet pumpkin frosting is the perfect finsihing touch.
  • These are quick to make, they only take about 15 minutes to but together, plus baking time.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

These are the best pumpkin blondies. They're dense, moist and chewy like a regular blondie, but also full of pumpkin flavor, and warm spices. These pumpkin bars are perfect for someone who doesn't love chocolate.

They are one of my very favorite pumpkin recipes.

These moist pumpkin blondies are usually the first recipe I make when I'm looking for some fall flavor, and they're on repeat all pumpkin season. I developed this recipe way back in a 2013. It's been tested and tried, and remade every fall since. I made them yesterday afternoon for a church event tonight. My family has already eaten 6 of them...safe to say we love them around here. 😉 This is easily my favorite blondie recipe.

As easy to make as your regular brownie recipes, but full of pumpkin goodness instead. They're made with simple ingredients from your pantry, that you usually have on hand, as well as the pumpkin puree, which you may have this time of year.

Ingredients

Pumpkin blondie ingredients in bowls on a wood table.
  • Pumpkin Puree: Be sure to use pure pumpkin puree in this recipe and not pumpkin pie filling, as it already has pumpkin pie spice and sugar added, and is not what you want for this recipe. We also recommend using canned pumpkin puree and not homemade pumpkin puree in this recipe because the homemade version tends be more wet, and it will affect the chewy, dense texture we want in the is recipe.
  • Brown Sugar: The addition of brown sugar to this recipe helps create the dense, chewy texture because of its molasses content. Also, always remember that when measuring brown sugar you need to pack it firmly into the mesuring cup.
  • Cinnamon, Cloves, and Nutmeg: These spices are bringing the pumpkins spice. You could use 2 teaspoon of pumpkin spice, instead of the individual spices if you wish. We like to use freshly ground nutmeg for extra flavor, but ground nutmeg is fine as well.

Recipe Alterations

  • Half This Recipe: You can also half this recipe for blondie bars, and make it in a 8 x 8 baking dish, and reduce the bake time to around 20 minutes.
  • Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Blondies: Add 1 cup of chocolate chips, or chocolate chunks, if you are a chocolate lover.
  • White Chocolate Pumpkin Blondies: Add in 1 cup of white chocolate chips for another chocolate chip pumpkin blondies option.
  • Caramel Pumpkin Blondies: Or try adding 1 cup of butterscotch chips for a caramel pumpkin blondies option.
  • Brown Butter Pumpkin Blondies: Brown the butter for the pumpkin blondie batter first to add a nutty, deep flavor that pairs beautifully with the pumpkin and spices.
  • Nutty Pumpkin Blondies: Fold in 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the blondie batter for added crunch and extra fall flavor.

Expert Tips

  • Don't over mix your blondie batter after you add in the flour. Overmixing creates too much gluten and leads to tough blondies intead of tender, chewy ones.
  • Don't over bake these blondies. They will lose some of their chewiness and become dry if over baked. Bake until they're set in middle and pulling away from the sides, and a toothpick stuck in the middle comes our clean.
  • Make sure to add the frosting, it really adds a lot of flavor and texture to this dish.

Storage

Store these pumpkin blondies with frosting in an airtight container at room temperature. They should keep for about 1 week. Store in the fridge for longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I half this pumpkin blondie recipe?

Yes, if you half this recipe bake it in an 8 x 8 baking dish, and reduce the cooking time to 20 minutes.

Why are my pumpkin blondies dry?

Your blondies will be dry if you over mix the batter, and if you over bake the them. They are done as soon as they start to pull away from the edges of the pan, the center is set and a toothpick stuck in them middle comes out clean. Better to slightly under bake than over bake this recipe.

Why is my pumpkin frosting too thin and runny?

Make sure your blondies are fully cooled before frosting. If you find your frosting is too thin and runny instead of fluffy, just add a little more powdered sugar to it. Start with a few tablespoons and add until you reach the desired consistency.

Can I use pumpkin pie filling instead of pumpkin puree in pumpkin blondies?

The short answer is no, not in this recipe. The long answer is yes, but you would have to adjust the recipe, since pumpkin pie filling already contains sugar, spices and other ingredients. You would want to adjust the spices and the sugar content to acomadate the differences. Thisp pumpkin blondie recipe has been created to use pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling.

Can I use homemade pumpkin puree in these pumpkin blondies?

We recommend using canned pumpkin puree in this recipe, because homemade pumpkin puree tends to be wettier and affect the the overall chewy, dense texture of the finished blondies.

The Rainbow Art Party

Rainbow art party ideas.

Rainbow Art Party: DIY rainbow decorations, art activity stations, and rainbow art themed party food ideas.

Rainbow art party ideas.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Last week my oldest daughter, Paige, turned nine. Nine, as in almost ten...where does the time go? She wanted a Rainbow Art Party, and today we're sharing all the fun details of the decorations, the art activities, and the rainbow art themed food.  This is such a fun party theme, full of bright colors, really fun art activities that our party guests loved.  It's the perfect theme if your birthday child is a little artist.

The Invitations

I did a little photo shoot with our birthday girl one day to make our cute party invitations. Then I just added some text to them on the computer, and printed them at home. She really loved them, and they were the perfect way to invite her friends her craft party.

Rainbow Art Party invitations

I thought I'd start out by sharing all the pretty decorations with you.

You can find all the Rainbow Art Party Activities here.  And all the Rainbow Art Party themed foods here.

My very, very, very favourite decorations ro4 my child's art party were the rainbow paper lanterns and rainbow flowers.

Outdoor Rainbow Art Party Decorations

rainbow paper lanterns

We love decorating of birthdays. Check out our best at home birthday party decorations here.

I collected paper lanterns from all over in all shapes, sizes, and rainbow colors for weeks and weeks. We hung them all in a line, in traditional rainbow order. They looked so, so pretty hanging on our pergola.  Paper lanterns are such a great alternative to helium balloons.  They're reusable, inexpensive, and you don't have to worry about picking them up at the last minute, so I think they're perfect party decor.

Rainbow paper lanterns

I always love to do special flowers for a party, and came up with the idea of doing one pretty mason jar for each colour of the rainbow for our art-themed party and lining up the different colors in the same rainbow order as the paper lanterns.

Rainbow flower arrangement

All the flowers are pretty much from my mom's garden, with the exception of the green mums that I picked up at the store. I love how it turned out.  It was just a simple design, but had so much impact.

Rainbow flower arrangement

Using different sized mason jars as vases was the perfect way to accommodate flowers of all different sizes.

diy Rainbow bunting

We planned to have the art activities outside in the yard when guests first arrived at the party, and then move into the house where it was cooler for the food. I wanted to add a little rainbow to the play structure so we made a simple rainbow bunting.

To make the rainbow bunting I used some twine and hot glued on some scrap fabric flags in our rainbow colours.  This was such a fun decor piece for an art birthday party.

Rainbow Art Party Decorations

We planned to welcome guests through the side gate, and into the yard.

Rainbow Art Party Decorations streamer rainbow

I decorated the rose arbour with simple rainbow streamers. They looked so pretty blowing in the wind.

Art Party Decorations welcome chalkboard

Guests were welcomed by the chalkboard, and a basket of art smocks for our little guests.

Rainbow pinwheels

I added these giant rainbow pinwheels to the garden edge.

Indoor Rainbow Party Decorations

Inside, there was a pretty rainbow decorated mantel. During the photo shoot for the invitation we got lots of fun shots of the birthday girl with a bouquet of rainbow balloons. For the mantel I printed a few and put them in simple dollar store frames.

We made more rainbow bunting and added in some pretty rainbow candles.

Rainbow Art Party Decorations

In the kitchen, we didn't have too much room for decorations. We decorated the chalkboard and I made a fun art birthday cake (think diaper cake but way better) as an art theme centerpiece. I used mini hat boxes as the base, and held craft supplies in place with elastics, ribbon and a little tape. We layered crayons, pom poms, feathers, markers, and glue sticks, with a paintbrush flag. It made for a fun addition.

art supplies cake decorations

In the dining room, I made this great birthday banner. I used free paint chips from the paint store, a letter stencil, and a black sharpie. It was so easy and turned out so cute.

art party paint chip banner decoration

On the dining room table was my second favourite decoration, a rainbow of candles.

Rainbow candle centre piece

I came up with the idea and wanted to start shopping but forced myself to check my candle stash before I bought anything.

Rainbow Art Party Decorations

I had them all, with the exception of two pairs of tamper candles. Guess I should do a candle inventory more often. I love how pretty they looked all together. I tried to keep it somewhat uniform by only using glass and a few metal candle holders.  If you wanted to create something similar, you could look for any colors you didn't have a the thrift store, as a great way to find inexpensive candles and candle holders.

Rainbow Guests Photo

One of the other best decorations -our guests! We asked the guests to all wear denim on the bottom and a certain coloured shirt on top for a special art project, all with the plan of taking a fun group shot. I love how it turned out. And you can see the birthday girl in her party outfit, white with a rainbow tutu -so much fun!  This was a fun easy group project, since everyone has jeans, and I worked out with the guests what color shirt they had, to coordinate it so that we had some of each color for our rainbow.  The best part of this, is that you have a special keepsake photo at the end.

Rainbow Art Party guests

The Rain (It was a Rainbow Party After all)

It was a great party...despite the rain. That's right it poured. The party started at 11, and by 10:30 we were pretty much set up for me to take pictures and add just a few more details. At 10:50 it started to rain -hard. We scrambled to get everything inside, including all the pretty paper lanterns before they were ruined. We forgot the paint smocks, but my mom quickly threw them in the dryer for a few minutes. 😉 As our guests were coming through the door, we were drying off the things from all of the 7 art centres we had originally set up in the backyard.  Everything was thrown in the patio doors dripping wet while running around like chickens with our heads cut off when it started to pour.

But parties aren't about everything being perfect, they're about having fun together.  So our guests pitched in and we set everything up inside and had a great time.  I love our friends and family. I was most sad about the lanterns that had nowhere to go inside and ended up in my bedroom.  They were slightly damp but out of the way to be dealt with later. We all joked that everyone could see how pretty they were on the blog!  So there we have it, at least we had some pictures before the rain came!

And I must say that the birthday girl didn't seemed that bothered by the rain (that interrupted her party for the third year in a row -next year an indoor party) and just had a great time enjoying her favourite pastime, art, with all her favourite people! Proving that life is what we make it, so we may as well make it a party -even in the rain!

rainbow party activities.

Rainbow Art Party Activity Centres

The birthday girl chose the entire theme because she loves art, so we decided to set up seven different simple art activity stations for our little guests to enjoy.  We used kids tables, covered in plastic table cloths for easy clean up as our little work tables.

My daughter Paige made the sweetest little signs for each station. We used simple IKEA frames, and she drew pictures to go with each activity.  Each table had the sign, and the art supplies for the activity.

We didn't set up a timer or schedule for visiting all the art stations.  The party had a relatively small group of kids, and all the parents stayed as well.  We let the kids follow their inner artist and visit as many craft activities as they liked, and revisit them for a second round if they wished.

Grab An Art Smock

We started out with giving everyone a paint smock to protect their party clothes.

Rainbow Play Dough

The first centre was Rainbow Play Dough.  I found this great "One Metre of Play Dough" in rainbow colors and the kids (and some of the grown-ups too) loved it.

Spiral Art

The second centre was Spiral Art. I remembered doing spiral art when I was a little girl. I picked up two kits at the dollar store for this station and all the pretty gel pens we could find.

Watercolour Painting

The third Centre was Watercolour Painting. My girls really enjoyed this station. I picked up some watercolour paper, we added a few pencils for sketching and the watercolor paint set.

Marble and Tire Track Painting

The forth centre was Marble and Tire Track Painting. I picked up a few shallow boxes at the grocery store, and we put some paint on a plate for our artists to roll their tires and marbles in. Then, they used the box to rotate the cars and/or marbles over a piece of paper to make some great prints.  This art activity was a bit different and lots of our guests really enjoyed it.

Bubble Art

The fifth centre was Bubble Art. To create pretty bubble printed paper, we made a mixture of paint, water, and dish soap. Then you create bubbles by blowing into the mixture with a straw, and then placing the paper on top to create the print. (A tip if you have very young artists, is to put a few pin pricks in the top half of the straws so that they can't accidentally suck it in by mistake.)

bubble art station.

Acrylic Painting

The sixth centre was Acrylic Painting with a Canvas and Easel. For this station we set up acrylic paints in the colours of the rainbow, with an art palette for mixing, and a sweet little blank canvas for everyone with mini easels and paint brushes from the local dollar store.  These were just the right size for our little artists.  And they all liked taking home the mini easels as well.

Water Gun Painting

The seventh and final centre was Water Gun Painting. We filled water guns with very watered down paint. Before the party, I used painters tape to mark each canvas with the guests initial, after the paint was squirted on and it dried the tape was removed to reveal the initial.  You could also use a spray bottle for this activity.

Drying Art Gallery

I set up a little art gallery for the paintings to dry and be viewed at. I made the banner from paint chips and a stencil -love how it turned out.

drying art gallery.

To attach the art to the wire fence, I found some pretty rainbow striped washi tape, and added it to simple wooden clothespins. It worked out great -after the rain stopped. 😉

Art Party Favor Bags with Paint Chip Thank You's

We also set up loot bags for our guests, so that throughout the party any art that didn't need to dry could be tucked inside, along with their paint smocks once the painting was done. We also included a fun watercolor set for some more creating at home.  It was fun using the paint chips for some creative ideas for the party.

loot bags to go.

I found pretty paper bags in every colour we needed to fit our rainbow themed birthday party. Then, we made thank you tags with more paint chips, and attached them to the bags with the rainbow washi tape.

Rainbow Art Party Food

We had so much fun at our Rainbow Art Party, and I had a great time coming up with the food, and I can't wait to share all the yummy details with you.

Paint Chips

While we were doing the art activities I had a chip buffet set up for munching on. This was one of my very favourite ideas of the party. I set up a Rainbow Chip Buffet, and we made a fun label that said "Paint Chips". Get it, I know I have a gift.

assorted edible paint chips.

I bought unused empty paint cans at the paint store, and painted a paint stir stick for each colour we used and placed it in the paint pails.  Then we filled each can with chips in the colors of the rainbow.

edible paint chips.

We had ketchup chips for red, cheesies for orange, regular chips for yellow, guacamole chips (I found at the bulk store) for green, and blue tortilla chips for blue. Everyone loved it, and nibbled away between activities until lunch. I envisioned it set up outside, and then had to quickly set it up on the toy box when everything was moved inside because of the rain, but you get the idea. 😉

The Rainbow Veggie Tray

rainbow vegetable tray.

For lunch we kept things simple and ordered pizza and wings, along with this Rainbow Veggie Tray of radishes, cherry tomatoes, carrots, yellow pepper, broccoli, cucumber, black olives and "black cherry" tomatoes. We couldn't come up with a blue veggie, but we're pretty close to a full rainbow.

dessert table.

Rainbow Art Party Dessert Table

The main food event of the party was the Rainbow Dessert Table.

Picture Frame Art Party Backdrop

I had a lot of fun putting the rainbow dessert table together. We started out with the pretty backdrop of rainbow coloured frames. I found them all at the second hand stores for a couple of dollars each. To start with I removed the backs and glass, and then painted them  with spray paint in different colours. The empty frames were attached to the wall with 3M hooks, they really work great and when you remove them, there really is no mark on the wall.

Paint Chip Food Labels

To make the food labels, I used some more paint chips.

rainbow party paint chip labels.

Rainbow Cake

The centerpiece of the table was the rainbow cake. I made it out of two cake mixes, and used food colouring to tint the layers. My one little tip: this time I bought disposable cake pans at the grocery store, it was so much easier than using my regular two pans, three times to bake the six layers.  With some extra disposable cake pans I could bake it all at once.

rainbow birthday cake with candles.

I bought the special birthday candles that have a coloured flame. They were a hit.

rainbow birthday cake.

The first slice was met by the appropriate oohs and aahs from the guests -as hoped for.

rainbow cake slice.

Along with the Rainbow Birthday Cake there were lots of other sweet treats.

Rainbow Paint Brush Rice Krispies

rainbow rice crispy paint brushes.

We made Rainbow Paint Brush Rice Krispies. These were also a big hit -delicious and pretty easy too.  We made regular rice krispie treats, cut them into rectangles and put a craft stick in one end to look like a paint brush handle.  Then we did the other end in melted colored.  We used chocolate melts in all the colors of the rainbow.

rainbow rice crispy paint brushes.

Rainbow Jello

We also made Rainbow Jello. It looked so pretty layered in rainbow order in plastic cups.  This process is a little time consuming, but creates such a beautiful effect.

Rainbow Fruit Tray

We did a Rainbow Fruit Tray for good measure, although I have to say it didn't see too much action. 😉

Paint Your Own Masterpiece Cookies

Lastly, my friend Heather made the amazing "Make Your Own Masterpiece" Sugar Cookies.

blank canvas cookie.

She made sugar cookies, and flooded them with white royal icing to make the perfect cookie canvas, and outlined it all in a sweet little icing gold frame.

Guests used edible markers to draw their own picture.

These were also a huge hit -they were just so cool...and delicious.  Our guests loved using the markers in creative ways to make their own little edible masterpieces.

Rainbow Paint Can Candy Bar

As another treat for the loot bags we set up a Rainbow Candy Bar. I found the fun little paint buckets at the dollar store, and then we found candy in every colour at the bulk store. It looked so pretty.  We had little plastic bags and tongs so that guests could help themselves, fill up their bag and then add it to their party favor.

rainbow candy buffet close up.

The party was a great success, and the birthday girl was all smiles.  This was one of the best birthday parties we ever had.  The kids of all ages loved getting their creative juices flowing, and making all kinds of art at the party.  This theme appealed to both boys and girls, and kids of different ages, from 4 year olds to 10 year olds.  Everyone could create as much or as little as they wanted and visit all or just favourite art centres.  I highly recommend this theme for your child's next birthday party.

Back to school party.

First Day of School Dinner Ideas -start a new tradition with your kids, surprise them with a back to school dinner on the first day of school.

Back to school party.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

I'm so excited to share our first day of school dinner ideas with you.  It's become a tradition at our house to surprise my girls with a special dinner when they get home from school on their first day and hear all about their new class.

Miniature School

Weeks ago when I was out shopping I noticed a few miniature school supplies at a party store, and thought how much my girls would love them. My youngest daughter loves playing school with her stuffed animals. I started collecting little mini paint sets, tape, crayons and markers over the last few weeks.

miniature toy school supplies

This gave me the idea to make our first day of school dinner into a back to "stuffy" school with a few of the girls stuffed animal "students". Once I got started, I couldn't help myself, it just got cuter and cuter. 😉

first day of school dinner ideas

Free Back To School Printables

I found some great back to school free printables at Tatertots and Jello and used them to make a pretty place setting.

Back to School Dinner

Then I had the idea to shrink the printables by 50% and make the a miniature stuffed animal version too.

Back to School Dinner

I cut down a matching paper napkin to make the stuffy napkins, and used a little crab apple to match the big ones. The cutlery and plates are from IKEA and made for dolls. The little cups are actually plastic shot glasses, and I cut down the straws to match ours.

Perfect for our little stuffy friends.

First Day of School Dinner and Mini Dinner Ideas

Then I thought it would be fun to make a mini version of dinner too.

I made a salad with cucumbers and tomatoes. For the mini version, I bought baby cucumbers, and used cherry tomatoes. I love how it turned out, next to our regular sized salad.

salad and mini salad miniature dinner

We had pizza, so I just used some bagel bites as a mini version for the stuffys.

Back to School Dinner

The girls even filled the stuffy's glasses with water, and crushed ice for stuffy sized ice cubes.

Back to School party

Dessert and Mini Dessert

For dessert, since we had a bit of an apple theme happening, we made apple pie -regular size and mini too.

Back to School Dinner

I used store bought pastry to make it really easy and even made a large and mini little back to school pick with the printables.

first day of school dinner ideas

The girls were so excited about it all. And the stuffed animals said it was the best dinner they'd had in ages. 😉

Back to School party

Playing School

After dinner we took all the new mini school supplies down to the toy room and set up a little classroom.

playing school

Maddie was so excited to put up the abc's (found at the dollar store), set up her desk and chalk board, and get her stuffed animals seated on the carpet for story time!

playing school

I always say life is what we make it, so we may as well make it a party! I hope my girls always remember this one. Hoping your first day of school was great too.

With first day of school dinner ideas like this one, life really is a party!

Easy Peach Sangria Recipe With White Wine

Peach sangria recipe.

Peach Sangria Recipe: The perfect peach sangria, sweet, fruity, easy to make and delicious. Made with fresh peaches and raspberries.

Peach sangria recipe.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This peach sangria recipe is the perfect, sweet, peachy, end of summer drink. While the peaches are in season, you must try it.

I made a batch and enjoyed it with friends on a Sunday afternoon.  They dropped by and I put together a batch.  We sat out in the garden sipping this lovely drink , and it couldn't have been more perfect summer drink.

This is my very favourite cocktail ever.

Sangria

Sangria is a wine punch made with wine, chopped fruit and other ingredients.  It originated in Spain.  Most sangria recipes are made with red wine and oranges, but our peach version uses white wine.  It is often quite sweet and fruity in flavor.  You can make as sweet as you like.  If you want it less sweet than use a less sweet wine as the base and add less sugar.

White Wine Sangria

We have made a white sangria with a base of white wine.  Sangria is often made with a sweeter wine, but if you prefer you can choose dry wines, or a crisp white wine for your base.  We choose Liebfraumilch as our wine base. It's a blend of Riesling and Sylvaner with fruit aromas, a light body and a slightly sweet finish.  You can also use a Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, White Zinfandel, or a dry Riesling or any sweet white wine that you enjoy for your peach sangria.

Fruit

Sangria always includes fresh fruit that's been chopped in it.  For our peach sangria we had to include some fresh ripe peaches.  You can use yellow peaches or white peaches or a combination of both for this sangria.  We used yellow peaches, since they grow in abundance here this time of year.  Juicy peaches add so much peach flavor to this white wine peach sangria.  Along with our peach slices, we also added some fresh raspberries.  The peaches and raspberries are a great summer fruit combination.

Alcohol

Sangria usually has some alcohol along with the wine.  Our peach sangria has both triple sec and peach schnapps added.  Triple sec is an orange liqueur and it and citrus fruits are traditional ingredients in red wine sangria, and are a lovely addition to our peach sangria.  Peach schnapps is a peach liqueur and help add more peach flavor to our punch.

how to make peach sangria

Sugar

Sangria is traditionally on the sweet side.  You can adjust the sugar depending on your preferences and how sweet your peaches are.  We used instant dissolving sugar.  Look for it in grocery stores with the baking ingredients and regular sugar.  It's sometimes called berry sugar, or superfine  or ultrafine sugar.  It's perfect for using in cold drinks, because the sugar crystals are smaller than normal and dissolve in liquids quickly.  Some people like to use simple syrup in sangria, but the instant dissolving sugar is easier to use.  If you like sweeter sangria you can adjust the amount of sugar for your preferences.

peach sangria with white wine

Ginger Ale

We used ginger ale in our sangria, it adds a nice bit of fizz to the sangria and a little more sweetness.  You can use sparkling water, club soda, or soda water to add some fizz without adding more sweetness if you wish.  Another great option is a lemon-lime soda like 7-up or sprite.  The soda pop or sparkling water help make the drink into a punch and give the characteristic fizz to the sangria.  If you prefer though, you can make your sangria flat.

Because sangria contains chopped fruit, it's best to prepare the punch ahead of time so that the flavors of the fruit and the fruit juices can infuse into the punch, and the wine and other alcohol can all mix together. Make sure to add your soda pop or sparkling water right before serving, after the rest of the ingredients have had time to sit and marinate,  so the pop doesn't lose the fizz.

If you love peaches, you'll love this drink.  This easy peach sangria is especially perfect to enjoy during peach season when they're so sweet and juicy.  The addition of raspberries is delicious too.  It's sweet, and peachy, and has a little fizz from the ginger ale.   It's so delicious on hot summer days.  It really is the perfect summer cocktail.

This sangria is perfect for entertaining, and great with some friends to help you drink you on a hot summer evening.

DIY Backyard Movie Night Under The Stars Ideas

Outdoor movie night.

Outdoor Movie Night: Ideas for movies under the stars an outdoor movie night, with a popcorn buffet for snacks, and a red and white decorations.

Outdoor movie night.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

We set up our Outdoor Movie Night at the cottage and it was so much fun!  This is pretty much the perfect way to spend a summer evening with family and friends.  I'm excited to share all our DIY backyard movie night ideas with you.

How To Make An Outdoor Movie Night Screen

My brother-in-law built this great, portable movie screen.  He made this DIY screen with a simple wooden frame and then stretched a really big fabric drop cloth over it, stapled in place with a staple gun.  It was perfect for our outdoor theater.

Other options for an outdoor screen would be use an inflatable movie screen.  What's great about an inflatable screen is it's easy to store when not in use.  You could also use any large flat surface.  So if you have a large white wall outside, that would work perfectly too.  Other diy options are to use a white sheet for your own DIY screen.

You will also need an outdoor projector and an outdoor extension cord.  Make sure you use one that is safe for outdoor use, and with good sound quality, or add some outdoor speakers for the evening.

how to make an Outdoor Movie screen

Seating Area

I thought it would be fun to add a few more fun details to our big screen. 😉 We started out by adding some twinkle lights to the screen.  I wanted it feel like a DIY marquee sign.  String lights over the seating area would be another outdoor lighting great addition to your own outdoor movie theater to create an inviting atmosphere at night.

For our outdoor movie theater seating area we set up a row of the beautiful red Muskoka chairs in our outdoor space.  Other great seating options around your own outdoor movie screen would be any outdoor chairs, or patio furniture.  For picnic style seating spread out some outdoor rugs and blankets in front and add pillows for comfortable seating.  Family movie night is for the whole family, and the little kids especially love the front row as a great place for the best view.

Outdoor Movie Night Snack Area

Movies need popcorn, so I set up a fun popcorn buffet for our outdoor cinema.  The popcorn buffet is one of my favorite things about our backyard movie night.

DIY Chalkboard Bunting

I thought it would be a fun idea to make some chalkboard bunting that we could write things on for an extra special touch. My brother-in-law cut out the triangles from some thin scrape wood, and drilled holes in the corners so we could thread them onto twine. My very sweet niece painted them all for us with chalkboard paint -thanks Jenny and Shaun. 😉 We used the large ones to write "Movie Night", but since they're little chalkboards they could be erased and used for anything.  These were so fun to add to our outdoor areas for movie night.

doy chalkboard bunting

On the bottom of the table we strung smaller ones and wrote popcorn.  This was such an easy way to to add a fun detail to the space.

popcorn buffet

I layered the table with red and white for a classic movie look. For the popcorn, I found great unfinished wooden boxes that I spray painted white and lined with waxed tissue paper.

popcorn bar

We used more chalkboard labels for the popcorn.

movie night popcorn bar

The Popcorn

  • buttered popcorn
  • white cheddar popcorn
  • caramel corn
  • white cheddar popcorn seasoning
  • dill pickle popcorn seasoning
  • jalapeno popcorn seasoning
  • cinnamon sugar popcorn seasoning

I love how the popcorn buffet turned out. Everyone thought that it was the best part of the evening.  We had white cheddar, caramel, and buttered popcorn.  I picked all the popcorn flavors at the grocery store.  If you had a popcorn machine, you could set it up here, and make fresh popcorn too.

movie night snacks

I thought it would be a great idea to add a few popcorn flavourings too. I picked them up at the bulk food store.  We put them in simple salt and pepper shakers, and added a cute chalkboard sticker label.

popcorn toppings

The toppings are on a little tray that matched the other containers.  I  also sprayed painted it white.  It's also holding some napkins and straws.  We used red as our pop of color.  Red and white feels like the perfect color scheme for movie night.

Candy and chocolate would be a great option for the popcorn buffet too.  For your own movie theater you could set up candy popcorn additions in small bowls with scoops for adding them to your popcorn bag mix.  You could also have some chocolate bars as another easy snack option.

movie night popcorn buffet

We used some fun little polka dot, and chevron patterned paper bags for everyone to scoop their popcorn into.  These worked great for serving, and everyone could come back up and refill them and try a different flavor during the evening.

Old Fashioned Drinks

I love the drinks we used, old fashioned pop shoppe bottles, in such fun flavours. These were pretty inviting in a simple galvanized bucket filled with ice, and the perfect touch to our movie night.

popshoppe pop

Cozy Blankets and Other Great Additions

And in case of cooler nights,  when the sun goes down at movie time, I included a bucket of cozy red fleece blankets.  These are a great way to cozy up for the movie.  A fire pit would be fun too.

blankets for outdoor movie night

We set it all down by the lake because we were at the cottage. Could it get any more idyllic?

Don't forget the bug spray.  Citronella candles would be a good option too.

And also make sure to check the weather forecast before setting it all up, nothing dampens an evening like this more than rain.

outdoor movie night party

Once you're all set up, it's time to enjoy your favorite film with your family members and friends.  This was such a fun activity for enjoying in the summer season.  We loved munching popcorn and enjoying ourselves under the stars watching one of our favorite movies together.  This was a family movie night, but it would be great as an outdoor activity for a birthday party or even as a movie date night.  We used basic materials and some creative ideas to create an amazing movie experience in our own backyard.  I hope it gives you plenty of inspiration fo your own backyard movie night.

Since my girls were very little, we've always packed a busy bag for things like road trips, restaurant visits, and other trips where the "I'm bored" monster might pay us a visit. If you're lucky enough to have one more summer road trip planned here's all you need to keep your little people happy.

We made our busy bags with these great backpack from Stuck On You. They choose their colour, and cute logo, and we had them personalized with their names. I love how each of my girls picked out a sweet logo that fit their personalities perfectly.

I Spy Game

We love to the fill the busy bag with lots of activities to keep them happy and entertained. This time I made them a special new treat, an "I Spy" game. They're big fans of the books, so I thought it would be fun to make this version, perfect for a long road trip.

  • empty water bottle
  • lots of little tiny toys
  • vase filler
  • photo of hidden toys
  • paper protector
  • zipped pouch
  • white markers
  • white board eraser and board cleaner

We started out by hunting around the house for lots of little toys. I found lots of perfect little treasures in the Barbie, playmobile, and lego bins. For the bottle I used an empty water bottle, and some great vase filler I found at the dollar store.

DIY I spy game

You could also use rice, but the vase filler was a great option, and I liked its clear colour.

Before I added the toys to the water bottle, I photographed them on a plain background.

DIY I spy game

I printed the picture, and placed it in a page protector. I picked up some fun coloured dry erase markers, an eraser and white board cleaner at the dollar store, and put everything in a perfect little carry case.

My girls loved playing with it, checking off the items they'd found, then erasing it and starting all over again.

Favourite Electronics

I always pack some electronics for a long road trip. We have a booklet of their favourite movies, and a portable dvd player, and some age appropriate electronic games.

Drawing Supplies

The other big favourite is lots of fun drawing things. My little artists can spend hours creating their masterpieces. We love our new pencil cases from Stuck On You.

Snack Kits

The last great addition to the fun bags for our long trip was some snacks. I found these great little storage boxes at the dollar store.

After washing them out, I filled them lots of little treats for the trip. I wanted things that would last if they didn't finish them all on the first leg of our trip, and that wouldn't make too big of a mess in the car if they spilled. There's a few sweets, and then a few healthier options like dried fruit and cereal.

How To Make Homemade Potato Chips

How to make homemade potato chips.

Homemade Potato Chips Recipe: Simple to make and so, so good. Love the flavour of salt and pepper, sure to wow your guests and quickly disappear.

Homemade potato chips.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

So I've been wanting to make homemade potato chips for a long time. I love chips...in fact they just might be my favourite food ever.  This homemade potato chips recipe is so good and the perfect treat.

We have a pretty strict rule in our house that we only buy chips for a party. I'm secretly very, very happy when there's leftovers after. 😉 The reason for this rule is that when it comes to potato chips I have zero self control.  They're my very favourite treat.  What could be better than this crispy, salty treat? So, going with the fact that everything's better when it's homemade, I've had chips on my mental to-do list for awhile.

Slicing The Potatoes

I'd been waiting until I had a mandoline, no not to play a tune on while I ate the chips, the kind that you use for cutting very thinly. They come on sale often at my local kitchen store, and I was waiting for a coupon. That day came, I went and picked one up for 5 bucks and was in business.

A mandoline slicer is the best and easiest tools to use to slice the potatoes nice and evenly and thinly.  It's important that the sliced potatoes are all the same thickness so that the cook at the same rate when you're frying them.  The mandoline works really well for making your own homemade potato chips, but do be sure to use the guard and use this sharp tool very carefully to avoid cutting yourself by accident.

how to make Homemade Potato Chips

Simple Ingredients

The ingredients are really simple.  You will need potatoes, oil for frying, and some salt and pepper, that's it.  This recipe isn't complicated at all.

Potatoes

What type of potatoes work best for making homemade potato chips?  The best potatoes to use for making homemade potato chips are high in starch and low in moisture.  Potatoes like russet potatoes, and Yukon golds work very well.  You can also try using sweet potatoes.

slicing potatoes on a mandoline for potato chips

Soaking The Potato Slices

I used my  mandolin slicer to slice them as thin as it could, right into some cold water. You want your chips to soak for about 30 minutes.

Why soak the potato chips before frying?

Soaking the potatoes before frying, really makes a better chip because some of the potato starch comes out into the water.  This makes a crisper potato chip.  It also helps prevent the sugars in the potato from browning to quickly on the outside, before the chip is cooked through on the inside.

sliced potatoes for homemade potato chips

The next step is to dry them off, it makes them splatter less in the oil.

Homemade Potato Chips Recipe

Frying

I used peanut oil to fry my potato chips.  I like peanut oil because it has a high smoke point.  It also does not easily absorb the flavors of the foods that are fried in it, meaning you can reuse the oil to fry other items with no taste transfer.  I

If you have a peanut oil you can use vegetable oil, sunflower oil,  or canola oil for frying, depending on your preference.  I don't like using olive oil for deep frying because it doesn't have a high enough smoke point.

I like to use a small at home deep fryer for frying.  It has a built in thermometer, so it regulates the oil temperature for you and is the easiest and safest way to deep fry at home.

Fry the potato chips in small batches in your deep fryer at 350 degrees, until golden brown. I like mine a little on the dark side, make them as dark or as light as you like. Smaller batches cook faster, since they don't cool the oil down as much when you add them.

how to make Potato Chips

After removing from the hot oil with a metal slotted spoon, drain the fried potato chips on a sheet pan lined with paper towels lined baking sheet to remove any excess oil.

Seasoning

Add a little salt and pepper right away to the fried chips.  If you wait too long it won't stick. We did some with just salt, but I really liked the salt and pepper combination the best.

You could get as creative as you want with the potato chip seasoning, and try some garlic salt, sea salt, old bay seasoning, parmesan cheese, or anything else you like.

These are also delicious with your favorite dip. I love them with a sour cream dip.

Tip:

The chips may not be completely crispy when you first take them out of the fryer.  Don't worry,  they need a few minutes to crisp up as they cool.

Home Made salted Potato Chips

Serve In Fry Boxes

I found these perfect french fry boxes to serve these crispy chips in.  I just love how they looked. My guests loved them too. Of course, I never really met a chip I didn't like. 😉 And these with a little dip...oh my yumminess.

Storage

If you have any leftover homemade chips store them in an airtight container at room temperature.

Potato Chips from scratch

These really are the perfect snack.  You will love these addictive potato chips.  And your guests will be very impressed when they hear you made your own potato chips.  They are so good and so fresh.  And you can have fun with different toppings like simple salt and pepper or something else.  This simple recipe is easy to put together and so, so good.

This make your own pizza party is perfect for entertaining.  Guest can choose their toppings and make their own favourite pizza.  It's grilled on the bbq so perfect for outdoors, but you could also do it indoors in the oven, or in a pizza oven.  This make your own pizza party is a crowd pleaser that everyone will enjoy.

I had a great week visiting friends and family in cottage country last week. Today I want to share a make your own pizza party that we put together. My sister is the manager of a camp, and they offer a few really fun workshops to their guests each week. One of the workshops is a make your own pizza party, where guests make pizza on the bbq -perfect for the cottage. Since I was coming up, I thought I'd pick up a few things to make it even more fun.  Here's how I put it all together.

Make Your Own Pizza Party toppings table

Pizza Party Decorations

We decided to go with a fun orange colour scheme, with some white and kraft paper brown for our make your own-pizza party.  I wanted a fun patterned tablecloth, and this one from Target was perfect. Our other big pop of orange was the fun tissue paper tassels that we strung over the table.  Red and white would a great color scheme for a home pizza party too.

pizza party decorations

The beach and forest background couldn't have been prettier.  We set up a few long tables to create our pizza making bar filled with all our favourite pizza toppings.  One long table made it easy for everyone to access and help themselves.

Make Your Own Pizza Party table with toppings

Centrepiece

I wanted to make a fun and reusable centerpiece for the table for our homemade pizza party, so I collected some different letters to spell "Pizza", and leaned them against a rustic wooden box. I really liked how we added a little orange to a couple letters by adding some orange yarn.

On top of the box, I planted some basil in a little tomato paste tin, and some oregano in a peeled tomatoes tin.  I really liked that it was imported from Italy too.  This was such a fun way to add an easy centerpiece for our pizza party theme.  And guests could help selves to the fresh herbs for their pizzas too.

Make Your Own Pizza Party centre piece

Food Labels

On top of our pretty tablecloth we layered some simple brown kraft paper, it made clean up easy, and worked great for writing our labels for all the individual toppings.  This was one of the best ideas because made it so easy for guests to know exactly what they were adding to their pizza.  We chopped lots of fun toppings, put them in simple glass bowls, and then wrote what they were right on the paper runner.  If you're setting up something similar, it's great to have the pizza toppings in matching bowls, like glass or white to help unify the look.  One of our simple tips is to space things out.  It can get a little congested when everyone is making their pizza, so if you have room space out the toppings a little so it isn't too crowded.

Chalkboard Instructions

On the table we also placed a fun chalkboard, made from a pretty old picture frame, with some instructions for the guests.  This made it easy for everyone to see exactly what they needed to do to make their pizza, and was a fun addition to the decor too.

Make Your Own Pizza Party instructions on a chalkboard for guests

Flowers

Another of our fun ideas for the table were these little clear bottles, with orange zinnias in them.  It's always nice to add some fresh flowers to the table for a party, and these were the perfect color.  The glass bottles tied in well with the glass bowls we used for our toppings too.

Pizza Party decorations

DIY Pizza Toppings

We had so much fun with all the toppings for the pizza and the party guests loved adding all their favorites to their personal size pizzas.  We did a little prep work ahead of time with all the fresh produce, so we could set out all the toppings in small dishes and have everything ready to go at the beginning of the party.  Here's what we had for toppings:

  • salt and pepper
  • olive oil
  • pizza sauce
  • roasted red peppers
  • green olives
  • hot peppers
  • green peppers
  • onion
  • tomatoes
  • pineapple
  • bacon
  • pepperoni
  • mozzarella cheese

More ideas you could include for the pizzas, or to add to the pizzas after their cooked are:

  • ham
  • feta cheese
  • white sauce
  • pesto sauce
  • bbq chicken
  • sausage
  • fresh basil leaves
  • fig jam
  • prosciutto
  • arugula

Be sure to have spoons and tongs available for all the toppings.  And don't forget a pizza cutter for cutting up the pizza after it's baked.

Also check with your guest for any dietary restrictions.  You may need some gluten free pizza crusts, low carb pizza crusts, or vegan cheese options, depending on your group.

This is the perfect pizza party for kids of all ages and adults because everyone can make their own personal pizzas to their tastes with their favorite pizza toppings.  The best part was watching everyone make their own delicious pizza with a unique flavor they would love.  Plain pepperoni pizzas were a hit with lots of the kids.  While the adults loved mixing and matching all the toppings at the pizza-making station, trying a little bit of everything.  This is the perfect way to make everyone happy.

How To Make Pizza On The BBQ

  1.  Start with the dough.   My sister made the dough earlier in the day, and put individual dough balls in ziplock bags. This makes it easy for everyone to make their pizza with the pre-made dough.  She loves this recipe (just for the dough) and makes it in her stand mixer, if you're looking for a good one. If you don't want to make your own dough, you can pick it up at the grocery store, or most pizza stores will sell just the dough for pizza parties if you ask them.  We used paper plates to flatten our dough on with a little all purpose flour dusted on them, then coated both sides of the dough with oil and salt and pepper.
  2. Next you're ready to grill the dough on the bbq.
  3. Grill until it's golden brown on both sides.
  4. Next top your pizza with sauce, cheese, and anything else you like on the make your own pizza bar. Then, turn off one side of the bbq, and place the topped pizza on the other side with the burner turned off, put the lid of your bbq down and leave it until the cheese is melted and the pizza looks done.

It's really delicious when it's done, with a nice charred, grilled flavour from the bbq.

Pizza In The Oven

We made our pizza on the bbq for this party.  It was perfect for this outdoor party.  You can easily make your pizza in a regular oven if you're indoors, or in a pizza oven if you're lucky enough to have one.  If you're making it in an oven, you can skip the pre-grill, and go straight to adding your toppings.  For the oven be sure to make your pizza on pizza pans or baking sheets.  We usually make individual pizzas and put two mini pizzas on one baking sheet.  It's a good idea to spray your baking sheet with some cooking spray so your fresh dough doesn't stick.  We bake them at 400 in the oven for about 10-15 minutes until their golden and bubbling on top.

Personal pizzas made on the bbq at a make your own pizza party.

We had a great time enjoying our make your own pizza party, it was so much fun and everyone loved all the different toppings they could use to make their own pizzas. This is really a great way to host a pizza party. We had a great time chatting and cooking together, while we waited for the different steps. I really recommend this as a great option for your next backyard bbq party with friends.  Everyone always loves a pizza night.  This DIY pizza station is perfect for a special occasion like your husband's birthday, a family get together, a dinner party with friends, or kid's DIY pizza party.

Cottage Hostess Gift: ideas for what to include in the perfect gift basket to bring to the cottage as a hostess gift for friends.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This cottage hostess gift is a little twist on a gift basket.  It's filled with lots of treats to enjoy over the weekend with your friends.

If someone is nice enough to invite you to their cottage for the weekend, you want to be the guest that brings the great hostess gift. And, hopefully when they are inviting again, you'll be on the top of their list.

Galvanized Pail

I started out mine with a great galvanized bucket from Dollarama, and put in a pretty little tea towel to line it too.  You could of course use a basket, but I thought a pail perfect for the cottage.

Alcohol

Next we added some wine and beer, because it's the cottage! Choose your favourites or the fixings for your favourite cocktail would be a great choice too.  If you prefer non-alcoholic drinks your favourite soft drink or sparkling water would be a great choice too.

Cheese and Crackers

I also added in some of my favourite snacks. I made the homemade flatbread crackers -see the easy recipe here , and they were a real hit ie. how to really impress people and hear things like -you actually made crackers? And, they're easy to make, just make sure you put them in something air tight.  I used some cello bags, and tied it with a little twine.

I also included some cheese, fancy mustard, pate, and some fresh fruit.

Everything you need for an afternoon of happiness on the dock. 😉

More Treats

Last but not least, I picked up some really snacky foods, my favourite kettle cooked chips and some peanuts, and some chocolate.  All my favourite treats.

Wrap It All Up

I wrapped it up in some clear cellophane and tied it with a little raffia to finish it off.

Easy Brownie Mix Mini Donuts with Chocolate Glaze

Mini brownie donuts.

Mini Brownie Mix Donuts: the perfect little mini donut made from a brownie mix, with a homemade glaze -super easy. So, so yummy you won't be able to stop eating them!

Mini brownie donuts.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

If you're looking for a quick way to make some delicious brown mini donuts you will love this simple recipe.  We used a store bought brownie mix fo the donuts and then added a homemade chocolate glaze that's so good!  This recipe has the deep chocolate flavor of a brownie with the fun shape and frosting of a mini donut.  Using a mix means these are quick and easy to make and they're such a crowd pleaser.  Any chocolate lover will love this simple recipe.

These mini brownie donuts are a combination of fudgy brownies and donut form or as some people call them bronuts.  These fudgy bronuts are so good.  You'll love our chocolatey bronuts no matter what you call them.

When it comes to new recipe ideas, I've had my failures from time to time. I can usually tweak them a little, and the good news is always that even if they aren't great, the evidence doesn't last too long anyway.

Let me tell you, this baking experiment was a winner right out of the gate. Honestly my very favourite new recipe, and it was met with rave reviews by my extended family and neighbours, who couldn't stop eating them.  If you're having chocolate cravings, we're here to help.

If You Can Dream It Brownie Donuts

It all started weeks and weeks ago, when I was imagining what a brownie donut would be like. This weekend I finally got around to trying it out.  And they were amazing.  They have the chewiness of normal brownies, with crispy edges.  If you're a person who loves to eat a corner brownie because it's a little bit more chewy and crisp around the edges, imagine if every piece was like an edge piece.  Because each individual mini brownie donut has lots of edges, they all have that great chewy, crispy texture on the edges and are still soft in the middle.  Plus, these brownie donuts have the most delicious sweet and thick chocolate glaze on top, that take them to the next level.

I started out with a simple grocery store brownie mix, and my mini donut pan. Mix the brownie mix according to the package directions.  I used a brownie mix because it's quicker and easier than making brownie batter from scratch.  But if you have a homemade brownie recipe that you love, feel free to use your favorite brownie recipe instead of a boxed mix to make your brownie doughnuts. Once you have the brownie mixture made, put the batter into a ziplock bag with the end snipped off so I could pipe the batter into the pan.  I found this was the easiest way to neatly and quickly get the brownie batter into the mini donut pan and it gave me the best results.

Mini Brownie Donuts made from brownie mix

Oil, Oil, Oil The Pan

I made sure to oil my non-stick brownie pan very well. The more oil the better, I even went to the trouble of washing and re-oiling my donut pan with every new batch...5 dozen brownies later, I was wishing I had at least one more pan to cut the time down, but in the end it was worth it.  You could also use a nonstick cooking spray for this step.   I used a non-stick metal pans, but a silicone donut pan would make it even easier to get the finished mini donuts out of the pan.

I baked mine for seven minutes, you'll have to adjust the cooking time according to your pan size, brownie mix, and oven. You want the brownie donut batter to puff up a little, and cook through so it holds it shape well, but still be a little chewy and still have that brownie like fudgy texture on the inside and moist crumbs.

After the brownies cooled they needed the perfect chocolate glaze icing, and this one is truly perfect.  You might not think that brownie donuts really need icing, but trust me this rich fudge icing is what make this a great recipe.

Chocolate Glaze

The finishing touch to these little chocolate donuts is the amazing chocolate glaze. The first step to making it is on the stove, and it's a warm glaze that is applied to the brownie donuts by dipping them it, which is a great quick and easy method.  As the glaze cools it sets.  After dipping you can also sprinkle them with chocolate sprinkles to turn them into triple chocolate brownie donuts.  The sprinkles add a little crunch to the mini donuts.  With or without the sprinkles they're delicious.

Mini Brown Donuts

I really liked the mini size of our brownie donuts.  They were such a delicious little bite.  They also had the best chewy texture.  You could also make these regular donut sized if you wish.  They would take less time to make and decorate.  The mini donuts did take quite a lot of time to bake.  If you do make them regular donut size, just be sure to increase the cooking time to accommodate the change in size.

Store these delicious homemade brownie donuts in an airtight container at room temperature.

Mini Brownie Donuts: the perfect little mini donut made from a brownie mix, with the perfect homemade glaze -super easy.

I served the mini donuts in an olive tray, which worked great, and gives you an idea how small they were. Everything really is cuter when it's mini!  These delicious treats didn't last too long.  They were a real crowd favorite.

how to make Mini Brownie mix Donuts

Seriously, one of my best recipe ideas EVER. You need to try these delicious bronuts.  These are not your average donut.  They have all the goodness of regular brownies, but with more with the chewy edges from the donut's round shape.  And let's not forget the addition of the delicious chocolate glaze.  The decadent brownies turned donuts are so good.

Ingredients

  • 1 boxed brownie mix plus the ingredients to make it
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 1 ½ teaspoon corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate chopped
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • optional: ¼ chocolate sprinkles

Instructions

  • Mix your brownie mix according to the package directions.
  • Prepare your mini brownie pan by oiling it well with vegetable oil.
  • Place brownie batter in piping bag or a ziplock bag and cut of the corner to pipe it into the mini brownie pan.
  • Bake the brownies according to the box instructions (adjusting for their small size) until they are cooked through, but still chewy. We did about 7 min. And them remove them from the donut molds to cool on a wire rack.
  • For the Chocolate Glaze
  • Combine butter, milk, corn syrup, and vanilla in medium saucepan and heat over medium heat until the butter is melted.
  • Decrease the heat to low, add the chocolate pieces, and whisk until it's completely melted.
  • Turn off the heat, and add the powdered sugar, and whisk until smooth. Dip donuts while the glaze is still warm.
  • Optional: before the glaze sets, sprinkle the top of each donut with chocolate sprinkles.

Notes

If the glaze becames a little too thick after a few mins., thin it with a little more milk, and warm it up again over a low heat.

Beach Activities For Kids: a day at the beach just got better with shell tic-tac-toe, sand bowling, ring toss and a picnic lunch of beach themed foods!

Beach activities and picnic ideas for kids.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

A day at the beach is always so much fun, but it's even more fun with a few great beach activities for kids planned. These activities don't need too much prepping ahead, and I promise your kids will be delighted to add them to the regular fun of swimming and sand castle making.

beach activities ring toss game

Beach Ring Toss

We started out with a fun little game of ring toss, that couldn't be simpler to prep. I brought a few mason jar rings from home, 3 gold and 3 silver, and then used a few sticks we found on the beach.

beach activities ring toss game

Each of my girls took turns to toss their rings. They loved it.

beach bowling

Beach Bowling

Our next activity was beach bowling. We used a plastic cup as a mould for our bowling pins.

beach sand bowling

We did three, but you could do as many as you like.

beach sand bowling

After they were ready, we used an old volleyball to bowl. It was so much fun, and the kids really enjoyed it. My little tip to remember is that you need a ball with a little weight to it, to knock down the heavy stand, a sports ball works great.

beach tic tac toe

Beach Tic Tac Toe

We also played beach tic-tac-toe. I spray painted some sea shells with red and pink before hand, to use as our X's and O's.

shell tic tac toe

We drew a grid in the sand, and started playing. If you didn't want to break out the spray paint, you could also use light and dark coloured stones, or just draw the X's and O'x in the sand too.

Lots of fun for a lazy beach day together.

Swimming

Of course the other great activity for our beach day, was swimming.

Beach Picnic

Out last beach activity that day was a fun picnic with beach themed foods.  While the girls played in the sand, I set up our lunch on a picnic table under a nice tree. The tree was perfect for hanging up our pretty bunting flags.

beach picnic food

I set the table with a pretty vintage table cloth, and brought along some simple mason jars for wild flowers we picked at the beach.

beach picnic lunch

I wanted to make a real beach inspired lunch for my girls, so here's the not too tricky, but still really special menu I came up with.

beach picnic food

Shell Pasta

My girls are huge fans of any kind of pasta, and their favourite is probably pasta with a little butter and parmesan cheese. I boiled up some shell pasta to go with our theme, and thought the cheese, looked a little like sand. I packed it up for the beach in sweet little mason jars.

beach picnic food

Fish Shaped Hard Boiled Eggs

My girls are also big fans of hard boiled eggs, and I just happen to have a bento fish shaped egg mould. We made fish eggs, that I wrapped in parchment and served in these sweet little boat like dishes.

Apple Sail Boats

I wanted to add a little fruit to the mix, so I turned apple wedges into sail boats, with a simple sail made from some pretty paper and a tooth pick.

Fish Cookies and Gummy Fish

For dessert, I picked up some chocolate gold fish cookies, and added a few gummy fish for fun.

I set up all the goodies, while the girls played.

Easy Homemade Pudding Pops

Homemade pudding pops.

Homemade Pudding Pops: recipe for chocolate,  s'more, banana, peaches and cream, and Pina colada jello pudding pops. The perfect easy treats for a hot summer day.

Homemade pudding pops.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Remember Jell-o Pudding Pops?  Yes, I'm a child of the 80's. I thought it would be fun to make some homemade pudding pops at home in some really fun flavours like s'more, banana, chocolate, peaches and cream, and pina colada.  Classic pudding pops are basically frozen pudding.  The original jello pudding pops  were sold in the freezer section.  They were a similar to fudge pops, or chocolate popsicles, but made with jello pudding, and they came in a bunch of different flavors.  You can no longer buy pudding pops, so we came up with our own homemade version.  With just a few a few basic ingredients, you can turn your favourite pudding into homemade popsicles.  It's such an easy way to make great frozen treats.  This is sure to become one of your favorite kid friendly recipes.

I served them at the end of a summery dinner, as the perfect sweet ending. They're also the perfect snack on a hot day.  Kids of all ages will love them.  They're a great easy recipe for the whole family to enjoy on warm summer days.

s'more, banana, and chocolate pudding pops

Pudding Pop Molds

We made our pudding pops in the 3 oz. paper dixie cups, and they are the perfect size for a kid size treat, or sampling a few different flavours. ;). For our dinner party dessert we served a sampling of 3 different flavors for each plate.  Fill each of the small paper cups with the pudding mixture and then add wooden popsicle sticks.  The pudding is thick enough to hold the pop sticks upright in the little cups.  I also found it helpful, if you're making more than one flavor at once to write the flavor name on each popsicle stick with a sharpie at the top, before inserting it.  You can also use silicon popsicle molds, or ice pop molds if you have them, or even ice cube trays with small plastic spoons in each one.

Basic Pudding Pop Recipe

The basic recipe for making homemade pudding pops uses just a few simple ingredients.   To make them, combine 1 package of pudding mix made following the directions on the box with 1 small carton of heavy cream that has been whipped.  You fold these into each other and then freeze them into popsicles. You can also use cool whip, but we prefer the version made with real whipped cream.  They're delicious made just this way in a classic vanilla pudding pops or chocolate pudding pops flavour.  But, you can make so many variations to this basic recipe by changing the pudding flavor and adding in some fun add-ins and optional ingredients and making a whole variety of flavors.  Look for pudding in flavors at grocery store, like white chocolate, banana, cheesecake, pistachio, oreo cookies and cream, butterscotch, and coconut.

Favourite Add-Ins

We had so much fun coming up with some fun combinations for our own custom flavors.  Once you've selected a your flavor of instant pudding mix, you can have fun with some add-ins to enhance the flavor.  Fresh fruit is a great choice, you might also like to try different candy, or cookie crumbs.

Easy Campfire Cinnamon Rolls

Campfire cinnamon rolls being roasted over a campfire.

Easy Campfire Cinnamon Rolls -the perfect easy treat for camping, using store bought cinnamon rolls, your kids will LOVE these!

Campfire cinnamon rolls being roasted over a campfire.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

f you're a fan of cinnamon rolls you will love this camping version.  Made with store-bought cinnamon rolls from the refrigerated section of the grocery store, they so easy to make.  And baked over an open campfire, they are so perfect for your next camping trip.

I had this idea, that you could make cinnamon rolls over the campfire, and they worked...they really worked. The kids were skeptical, but let me tell you, they were believers after their first bites.

I was on my annual camping trip, with 4 of my girl friends and our 10 kids on a beach/camping trip for a couple nights. We've got a little smarter over the years, and we've settled into a great little system where one of us cooks one meal for everyone over the trip and that's all you have to do. We supplement it with trips to the ice cream shop too. 😉 I picked the first dinner -it's a get it over with so you can enjoy yourself kind-of-a-move.

I wowed them with the campfire paninis, can I just say, they really are awesome. And just when they were all satisfied with their amazing dinner, I brought on dessert.  These were a lovely after dinner dessert treat.  They would also make a great and easy breakfast.

It was a little experimental, but it actually worked a charm. Surveying the kids afterward, I think this might just become part of our annual camping tradition. They aren't exactly like the out of the oven version.  They're a little smoky, and a little charred, but that just makes them more campfire-y.  This is one of my new favorite camping recipes.

Campfire Cooking

Move over marshmallows, we've got a new favorite campfire dessert to make in the great outdoors over an open fire!  Just like roasting marshmallows, these work best over a fire that has some nice hot coals.  You won't want to place your cinnamon rolls over the direct or large flames.  The hottest part of the campfire is the hot coals, and this is the best spot for roasting them in indirect heat rather than in the open flame.

We roasted our delicious campfire cinnamon roll-ups using marshmallow forks.  These are great because they're extendable.  They also offer a little more space for the cinnamon roll, and are a better choice than roasting stick.  Fair warning though, It does take quite a while to cook the cinnamon roll dough all the way through.  Some of our younger kids got tired of holding their forks and rotating them, so the moms took over, even propping some of the forks over the coals, and rotating them occasionally.  Cooking time will vary depending on how hot your coals are, are big your fire is, and hot close to the hot coats in your fire pit that you hold your cinnamon roll while it cooks.  Keep in mind these usually take 10 minutes or so in the oven to bake.

use store bought cinnamon rolls and roast over a campfire

In order to put your cinnamon roll onto your campfire fork, you will need to unroll it, and then roll it onto the the fork in a single overlapping layer.  We used half of one cinnamon per fork.  You will know the cinnamon roll is cooked when it's golden brown on the outside and no longer doughy on the inside.  Cook them less for more gooey cinnamon rolls.

unrolling a cinnamon roll

Be sure to let your cinnamon rolls cool slightly before eating.  The best part of these yummy cinnamon rolls is the topping.  We used the cream cheese icing that comes in the premade package with the cinnamon rolls to ice them after they're cooked, or you can roll them in a cinnamon sugar mixture.  Both options make such a tasty treat.

roasting a cinnamon roll over a campfire

So simple, and so, so yummy.   This is the perfect fun treat to make while you're sitting around a campfire. There is no easier camping recipe to make.   I know all the campfire foodie people will love this idea.  There's no prep work, and it's one of our favorite campfire easy recipes.  If you're huge fans of cinnamon buns, then you will love this easy campfire version.  This the best way to make quick and fun camping breakfasts or dessert around the campfire at the end of the day.

Ingredients

  • Pillsbury Grands "Flaky Supreme" Cinnamon Rolls with Icing you can use any brand or kind you like, but these unrolled really well

Instructions

  • Unwrap the cinnamon roll dough, and divide the long pieces of dough in half.
  • Wrap half of the dough from the flattened roll around a campfire fork. Do not overlap the dough too much. If it's too thick it will burn on the outside and be doughy still on the inside. Now just roast it over your campfire. As it cooks it will get browned on the outside and puff up a little. The main challenge is getting it done on the inside, so it's not too doughy.
  • Once it's done, let is sit a few minutes because it will be too hot to handle, then take it off the fork and drizzle with a little bit of the prepared icing.

Kit Kat Ice Cream Recipe -delicious homemade vanilla ice cream base, with our favourite chocolate bar mixed in for a little chocolate and some crunch.

Homemade kit kat ice cream in a pink striped container.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This Kit Kat Ice Cream Recipe is a favourite and sure to make many appearances at our house over the summer.  If you're a fan of kit kat candy bars, you're sure to love this homemade ice cream recipe full of chopped kit-kat pieces.  Kit kat bars have always been a childhood favorite.  You can buy store-bought ice cream in kit kat flavor at grocery stores, but it really can not compare with this homemade version.  The vanilla custard ice cream base is rich and so creamy, and the crunchy milk chocolate kit kat pieces are the perfect combination.  This time of year, when the weather is hot, it's the perfect summertime treat, made with simple ingredients.

Ice Cream Machine

You will need an ice cream machine to churn this ice cream.  We have an ice cream maker, but we rarely use it. Let me tell you, it's worth getting that baby out for this recipe, it's really, really good. For most ice cream makers, the churning section must be frozen to use it.  It's worth storing this section in the freezer so you're ready to make your own ice cream anytime you want to.  If you don't store this part in the freezer, be sure to pre-chill it the day before you want to make this recipe.

Kit Kat chocolate bars

Kit Kats were always a favourite chocolate bar of mine, and adding them to ice cream makes them even better.

chopped Kit Kat bars

Cut the kit kat bars into large chunks before adding them into the churned ice cream during the last few minutes.

I think this might be my new favourite ice cream. I'm really a vanilla girl, and the addition of the kit kat is kind of perfect -not too chocolaty, but a nice little crunch with the delicious little flecks of real vanilla too. My kids also loved it.

Using a thermometer is a great way to take all the guesswork out of the recipe too. Definitely a make-again and again recipe.  This easy recipe has only a few simple steps and make such a delicious treat.  It's perfect for enjoying with your family or serving to friends this summer.

Serve your creamy ice cream in an ice cream cone, bowl, or in waffle cones.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups half-and-half cream
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 8 large egg yolks
  • 1 ¼ cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 vanilla bean optional
  • 4 Kit Kat bars

Instructions

  • Place half-and-half and the heavy cream into a saucepan, and heat over medium heat. Bring the mixture just to a simmer, stirring occasionally and remove from heat.
  • Next, in a medium bowl whisk the egg yolks until they lighten in colour, then gradually whisk in the sugar. Now temper the cream mixture by gradually adding small amounts of the heated cream, until ⅓ has been added. Finally pour in the remainder and return the entire mixture to the saucepan. Continue to cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, reaching 170 to 175 degrees F.
  • Next pour the cream and egg mixture into a large bowl and cool at room temperature half an hour. Stir in the vanilla, and the inside scraping of the vanilla bean (or omit the vanilla bean and use 2 teaspoon of vanilla extract). Refrigerate the mixture 4-8 hours until the temperature is 40 degrees F or below.
  • Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer's direction to churn ice cream. Meanwhile, chop the kit kat bars into small pieces. Finally during the last 5 min as you churn in the ice cream maker, add in the chopped kit kat pieces. Enjoy from the ice cream maker as soft serve or freeze 3-4 hours in the freezer in an air-tight container for the ice cream to fully harden

Mustache Party

Mustache theme party ideas.

Mustache Party: Ist birthday party Mustache Bash Little Man themed party full of mustache details and ideas for food, decor, and party favours.

moustache themed party ideas
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

I had the great pleasure of attending my friend Alexander's first birthday a little while ago, it was a "Mustache Bash" and I thought you'd love to see all the fun details from this adorable mustache theme party. Nice to see a boy's party around here for a change? Yeah, me too. 😉

Mustache Party Decor

Alex's mom Katie, set up the little man birthday party in the backyard for close friends and family. I loved the Birthday banner, made with Alexander's Grandpa's ties, he just retired and since his business days are done, he was more than happy to contribute these for the birthday celebration. ;). Katie also added in some number 1s and the birthday boy's name "Alexander". I love personalized handmade party decor like this.  She created it out of black and white card stock and used some clothes pins to attach the letters to the banner string.  I also love that the name is reusable, and something she could change to fit any party theme or color scheme in the future.  The name banner would be a great one to use for every birthday and add different accent pieces to for a different theme or type of party each year.

Mustache Bash party decorations tie garland

The party colour scheme was black and white and worked so well with the little man mustache party theme. I loved the main focal point dessert table.

Party guests were invited to grab a mustache to wear for the party as soon as they arrived, and there were a few great options to choice from..

Mustache Bash stick on mustaches

Katie picked up the stick-on mustaches, and finger tattoos at the party store. Here she is with one of the finger tattoos held up to her upper lip -so cute.

Mustache finger tattoo

I kind of loved Alexander's Dad's mustache the best though.  Why did mustaches ever go out of everyday fashion?  I think maybe we should bring them back

Mustache Bash little man 1st birthday party

For those of us who couldn't grow one just for the party there were always stickers. Some people can just make anything look good. ;). The mustaches made great photo props.

Mustache Party Food

Katie made a great dinner for everyone, of Little Manwiches. They were delicious, and the easy way to feed a large party crowd.

She made pulled pork in the slow-cooker and offered lots of different bbq sauces, and buns for guests to make their own sandwich at the food table.

Mustache Bash manwiches

There were also bow ties -Pasta Salad made with bow tie pasta, and a veggie tray.

Mustache Bash party food

I loved the tie napkins Katie made -such a cute detail. She just folded regular black napkins and secured with a dab of glue.  There's no need for napkin rings, when your napkin is a tie!  These were so cute with the little men theme .

Mustache Party Drink Station

And for the drinks, a cute little "wet your whiskers" sign, and regular cups that Katie added mustaches to with a marker. So clever.  I love this idea to personalize your party supplies for your own mustache party.  There was punch, pop, and juice boxes for kids to enjoy.

Photo Booth

There was also a fun photo booth for guests, with some cute props for photos. I love the sign, "Comb on over to the Photo Booth...we mustache you to grab a prop and smile"! Love it.  What a great way to capture some memories of the day.  And the mustache props were so much fun.

Here's the birthday boy with a little top hat.  He is the sweetest little boy, and his mustache birthday party was so much fun.

Mustache Party Dessert Table

Back to the dessert table, full of oh so sweet little delicious treats.

Mustache cupcakes

Katie made the cupcakes and decorated them with cute printables.  She also made the birthday cake. I love how striking the simple black and white is and how perfectly it goes with the fun theme.

Mustache birthday cake

Katie found a chocolate mold at Bulk Barn and made the fun mustache chocolate lollipops. So cute here served in mason jars.

Mustache party dessert table

I made some mustache sugar cookies for the party, using a cute moustache cookie cutter, and decorating them with chocolate sprinkles.  I baked them on a lollipop stick, and they were so much fun.  Here's Alex's auntie modelling one for us.

Party Favors

As parting gifts, Katie made the cutest little "staches" to head home with.

Mustache Bash party favours

Katie filled the bags with white and black gum balls, mustache bandaids, more tattoos and mustache stickers, and a chocolate lollipop mustache. Katie spotted the little favour bags in the wedding section of the dollar store, and made the labels. I love how they turned out.

One last little detail, Katie found the mustache pacifier at Chapters, tastes best when covered in birthday cake icing. 😉

Mustache Bash 1st birthday

I had such a good time celebrating Alex's first birthday at the Mustache Bash! I love themed parties, and this stash bash was such a great time.  It would also be a great theme to use for Father's day, or for a mustache baby shower for a little boy, or even for a movember party.  I hope you find all these mustache party ideas helpful if you planning any mustache parties.

With mustache's all round, life really is a party! Happy Birthday Alexander!

If you have a shady spot you can still have a beautiful little container fairy garden.  Here's some ides for some fairy garden plants for shade, and cute fairy garden accessories too.

I was visiting my mom this week, and took some pictures of her fairy garden.  I thought you might like, especially if you have a shady spot.

Shade Fairy Garden Plants

  • maiden hair fern
  • miniature fushia
  • baby tears
  • alyssum

My mom has her fairy garden on her veranda, where it doesn't get much sun.  So she's used shade loving plants.  At the garden centre look for plants that love shade.  Also look for ones that won't get too big, or miniature versions of you favourites.

Fairy Garden

She stared out with  her little house that we made her last year -see how we made the fairy garden house here, and she picked up a few things from the miniature doll house store.

fairy shade garden

She made a little path from the house to the fairy clothesline out of some wood rounds, sawed from a not-too-big branch. The shade loving plant beside the little house is a Maiden Hair Fern.

She also used a Miniature Fushia, and underneath added some pretty gravel and a sweet chair for a little gardening fairy to rest in, along with her gardening tools of a shovel, a rake, and a little red pail.

Behind the chair area, she tucked in her "Fairies Welcome" stamped spoon.

The other little plants she used were some Baby Tears, and Alyssum, and at the side of the house some rubber boots and little shovel.

The pot is tucked in beside some other shade loving pots of hosta, and near a little bench where it can be easy seen and enjoyed.

DIY Sponge Balls and Lemon Squirters: easy ideas for kids DIY water toys and full tutorial to make your own sponge balls.

Easy DIY sponge balls and lemon squirters.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

These DIY Sponge Balls are easy and inexpensive to make.  They're perfect for a hot day to enjoy a water fight.  They're a great alternative to a water balloon fight.  There's no awkward water balloon filling, and no mess of tiny pieces of broken balloons afterward to clean up.  And you can use these reusable sponge balls over and over.  They're perfect for endless hours of fun on a hot summer day.  They're made from simple supplies from the dollar store and they're very easy to make.

We also made these adorable kemon squirters make really fun DIY water toys for kids.  Get ready for a fun backyard water play day.

We hosted a lemonade themed birthday party, that I shared all the decor and food for here. Today I want to share how we made the DIY sponge balls.  The kids enjoyed some water play in the backyard with these sponge bombs.  They had so much fun with a bucket of water and these fun DIY water toys.  These are a great way to make an inexpensive and fun activity that your kids will love on a summer day.

DIY Sponge Balls

Choosing Your Supplies

To make the sponge balls you'll need 2 sponges from the dollar store, a small hair elastic, and scissors.  The inexpensive and brightly coloured sponges work really well for this project.  Hair elastics work perfectly for this project.  They're smaller than a rubber band, so they disappear into the center of the sponge ball.  You don't want to use something like cable ties or zip ties for this project, because they're too hard, and might not be comfortable if little kids are throwing them.

Equipment

  • scissors

Materials

  • 2 sponges
  • 1 hair tie in a coordinating color

Instructions

  • To make the sponge balls, begin by snipping the sponges almost to the middle on both sides, into 8 squares on each side -see the picture. Some people like to cut the sponge into sponge strips, but we left ours connected in the middle to give the sponge ball more stability and strength. You're basically dividing the sponge into 8 pieces, but leaving them connected in the middle, so cutting the sponge almost in half crosswise, and then 4 more snips to divide those into 8. Do the exact same on the other side.
  • Once the sponge pieces are all snipped, stack them and hold them together with a hair elastic.
  • Then, just tighten the elastic until the sponges form a ball shape. That's it, so easy.

I used one pink sponge and one yellow for my sponges, but you could make these any bright colors you like.  Choose two matching, or mix the colors like I did.

We used our sponges in our little pool, and also to do a water relay with some buckets of water.  These are perfect for summer fun with a DIY backyard water day or field day.

We also set up the slip n' slide, and had the best water-filled fun day with it, our simple sponge balls, and our homemade lemon squirters.

Lemon Spriters

The other fun little DIY water toy that I came up with was to make lemon squirters.

diy kids water toys

I found lemon juice in these little plastic lemon containers at the grocery store. I emptied out the lemon juice, and then we filled them with water to make the cutest lemon squirters!  These are a great idea as an alternative to a water gun, and such a fun way to upcycle and add to your fun summer activities.

diy water toys

The girls had a great time enjoying the water, making up fun activities like relay games, squirting, sliding, and running around the backyard.  Kids of all ages would love playing water war with the sponge water balls.  And after they're done, just ring out the excess water and let them dry out in the sun and your DIY sponge water bombs are ready for next time.

With DIY sponge balls and lemon squirters, life really is a party.

Lemonade Party

Last week we had a special celebration for our dear friend Allie's birthday. She's away on a big family vacation this year over her birthday, and we just couldn't let a year go by without celebrating with this sweet girl. She's had some great parties in the past, including the ladybug themed party, the farm themed birthday party, and the stuffed puppy dog adoption party. Her favourite colour is yellow, which inspired our lemonade themed birthday celebration. The party was a surprise for Allie and she was so excited when she saw everything all set up just for her.

Lemonade Inspired Outfit

I made her a simple hair band for her hair from a felt lemon slice, attached to a pink hair band.  This was an easy no-sew made with felt and glue, and so cute for her party look.  We teamed it up with a pretty pink tutu skirt and a yellow polka dot t-shirt for the perfect little outfit for a lemonade birthday party.

easy lemonade diy headband

It was a beautiful day outside, so we enjoyed the backyard with our lemonade stand, a bbq lunch and some fun water play. We sat out under the pergola.

Pink and Yellow Lemonade Party decor

Lemonade Themed Decor

The themed set the color palette for the party.  We went with yellow and pink to go with our fun lemonade theme.  I started out with this pretty yellow striped tablecloth. For the flowers I picked some wild flowers.  Wild pink roses, daisies and buttercups worked perfectly for our pink and yellow color scheme.  I placed the wildflowers around the yard in pretty mason jars.  They were so simple and so beautiful.

Pink and Yellow flowers centrepiece

I also used the felt birthday banner that I made years ago.

diy felt happy birthday banner bunting

When I made it, I made sure that the bunting flags on the ends were blank so the decorations could be changed with velcro or double sided tape, to fit any theme. For our lemonade party theme, I made some simple felt lemon slices out of felt and attached them to the ends.  This is such a great custom piece that I've had so much use of over the years, and always looks so great.  I made the main happy birthday bunting white and pink and for every birthday I just change out the felt picture pieces on the end to match whatever theme we're doing.  It's such an easy way to add some themed decor to any birthday party.

 Lemonade Party decorations

BBQ Lunch

I set up the lunch food on a little bench up on the deck.  I also decorated with more wild flowers, and a chalkboard sign.

Pink and Yellow party decor

We had a simple, kid friendly lunch of hotdogs and sausage, veggies and dip, and chips.

Pink and Yellow Lemonade Party

Next I used some yellow checked wax paper to wrap up the hot dogs, and take out fry containers to hold the chips, which worked out perfectly, and looked great.  Backyard bbqs are so perfect for a summer birthday party.

Lemonade Party ideas

After lunch it was time for dessert. My sister and brother-in-law made my girls this awesome lemonade stand, a few Christmas' ago. It was made with a changeable awning, we used the other one for Maddie's cupcake themed birthday party see it here. For this party it was the perfect lemonade stand and dessert table, with the "pinch of sugar Lemonade" banner.  My sister had these printed on vinyl when they made the stand.  You could create something similar with a table, a small bookcase, or some wood crates stacked together to create the stand.  For the awning you could use some poles in the corners with fabric draped over top to create a similar look.

The Lemonade Stand

You can't have a lemonade themed party without lemonade.  It just might have been the most important thing to include.  We used the bottom section of the stand for lemons, and filled the middle baskets with lemonade. I found these great individual sized bottles, and filled them with regular and pink lemonade, and then filled the containers with ice to keep them nice and cold on a hot summer day.  I paired them up with pretty pink and yellow striped straws.  For the actual lemons, which were a fun decorative touch, we filled the bins with pink paper shred and added in lots of fresh lemons.  After the party, I'll have lots of lemons for making more fresh lemonade.

Pink and Yellow Lemonade Dessert Table

The show stopper was the top section which we used for the lemon pink lemonade party dessert table.  It was filled with lots of yellow, and pink desserts and yummy treats.  I had so much fun shopping for and baking all the lemon party treats.

Sweet treats are the birthday girls favorite.  She loves candy, so I found a few fun lemon sweets, including lemon slice gummy candies, lemon lollipops, and plastic lemon fruit filled with sweet and sour powder to include on our adorable lemonade dessert table.

We had some strawberry jelly donut timbits. I made a few fun picks with yellow and pink pom poms glued onto some toothpicks.  The little tiny plates are from the dollar store.

I made some of my Grandma's sugar cookies. To make them look like lemons, I cut out the circle shape using a glass as a cookie cutter. I served them on a plate covered in pink sprinkles, such a fun idea for serving small treats at a party, and one of my favorite details.

Birthday Cake

The cake was a delicious pink ombre cake with fluffy marshmallow icing.  We used a white cake mix and some pink food colouring to create the pink ombre layers, and it looked so pretty when we cut into it.   I kept the cake decoration easy with just some long skinny pink and yellow candles.

Party Activities

We had a wonderful afternoon together playing in the backyard with a few fun activities.  I made some lemon squirters and a some sponge balls for the kids.  We set up their little splash pool, and the slip and slide and they a had a great time enjoying some water play.  This is always a great activity for summer birthdays.  They played all afternoon, sipped on lemonade, and enjoyed treats from the sweets table.

The lemon squirters were a fun alternative to water guns that fit our theme so perfectly.  I love coming up with creative ways to incorporate a them.  These were the perfect extra special touch to go with our them.  I picked up lemon juice containers at the dollar store, look for them at the grocery store too.  I just emptied them out and rinsed them with water.  They were then ready to use as the perfect squirters.  Just squeeze them and put them in the pool to refill them and then have fun squirting.  They fit our lemon theme perfectly and were a really inexpensive way to make a fun toy.

The sponge balls were an easy DIY also.  I found pink and yellow sponges at the dollar store to fit our color scheme.  Read all about how to make the DIY sponge balls here.  These were a big hit with the kids how enjoyed playing with them.  We also set up a fun relay race to fill a bucket of water by running back and forth between the pool and the bucket with the sponge ball, racing to fill up the bucket with water.  You could also do the same with the lemon squirters if you you're looking for more party games.

Lemonade Party games activities

Party Favors

We sent the guests home with the lemon squirters and sponge balls.  We also had some cello bags for party guests to take the lemon candies home in

This lemonade party was such a great theme full of fun ideas for celebrating.  It's a great way to celebrate a birthday, and such a fun idea for a first birthday too.  It would also be a really cute them for a bridal shower or a baby shower.  I hope some of these great ideas inspire you for your own celebration.

With a sweet little lemonade party like this one, life really is a party! Happy Birthday Miss Allie!

Easy Homemade Strawberry Cobbler

Jun 28, 2013 · 9 Comments

Strawberry cobbler in a mason jar.

Strawberry Cobbler Recipe: the perfect summer dessert. Baked in individual mason jars so they're perfectly portioned and portable, or as one large cobbler, it's the perfect easy strawberry dessert.

Strawberry cobbler in a mason jar.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Strawberry cobbler is such a delicious treat.  It's the perfect way to enjoy fresh berries during strawberry season, or make it using frozen berries other times of year.  This easy strawberry cobbler recipe is easy to put together.  No need to fuss with pastry, this cobbler topping is so much easier to make, and creates the perfect baked dessert.  Make these fruit cobblers in individual mason jars like we did, or use this recipe to make one large one.  Either way this delicious recipe is sure to become a new favorite.

This strawberry cobbler in a mason jar is sweet and delicious and everything a summer dessert should be.  The juicy strawberries pair perfectly with the crisp cobbler topping, creating the perfect  balance.  It's also so much easier than making pie crust from scratch and getting out your pastry blender and rolling pin.  This easy cobbler recipe is a great alternative to making a strawberry pie, with minimal effort and amazing taste.  It's a great way to use up any leftover strawberries for a delicious dessert.

Crisp Vs. Cobber

What's the difference between a crisp and cobbler?  A cobbler is a dish containing fruit topped off with a sweet batter or biscuit like topping.  Cobbler recipes do not contain rolled oats.  Strawberry crisp, or any fruit crisp is also a baked fruit dish, but the topping usually contains of rolled oats, and brown sugar, and has a strudel like consistency.  Cobbler may have received its name because the cobbler batter topping resembles a cobblestone path, with gaps between the stone path.

Fresh or Frozen Berries

Strawberries are in season in Ontario right now where I live, and this would be the perfect way to use some that you've freshly picked.  If strawberries are out of season, feel free to use frozen strawberries in the place of fresh fruit for this recipe.  Just let them thaw first, and drain any excess liquids before adding it to the recipe.

Individual or One Large Strawberry Cobbler

I made these as individual strawberry cobblers in mini mason jars.  You could also make them in small ramekins.  The individual strawberry cobblers make serving these very easy, since guests can just help themselves to one.  The mason jars are also great if you need to bring this dish somewhere, since you can just add the individual lids onto each jar to seal them for transport.  They also look really cute in the individual jars.

You can also use this recipe to make one large strawberry cobbler in a 2 qt. baking dish. and increase the cooking time to about 35 minutes, until the top is golden brown.

More Fruit Options

This recipe is so good. Even my picky eater who won't even try strawberries loved this dessert.   I think it's my very favorite dessert to make with fresh strawberries.  But you can also make this delicious cobbler with lots of different fruit options. It's very versatile, and an easy way to make lots of different fruit desserts.  Use peaches to make peach cobbler, try blueberries for blueberry cobbler, use blackberries for blackberry cobbler, or try a combination of fruits.  Use of mix of summer berries for a mixed berry cobbler, or try combining strawberry and rhubarb for a strawberry rhubarb cobbler.  Substitute any of these options, replacing the two cups of strawberries, or 2 cups of a different type of fruit, or combination of fruits to make any type of cobbler you like.  If your fruit is extremely sweet you can reduce the ¼ of sugar you add to the fruit, and if it's not very sweet, you may want to increase it, especially if you have a sweet tooth.  This recipe makes the best cobbler, with any kind of fruit.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve this easy dessert warm or at room temperature.  Top your strawberry cobbler a little vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream.  The tart fruit, crispy sweet cobbler topping and creamy ice cream or whipped cream make the perfect combination of flavors.  Warm strawberry cobbler is particularly delicious served with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect warm cobbler and cold ice cream juxtaposition.

This scrumptious fresh strawberry cobbler is such a crowd pleaser.  It's perfect for entertaining.  Your guests will love this homemade cobbler, and you'll love how quick and and easy it is to make this old-fashioned dessert.

Canada Day Dessert

Cobbler seems to be a not very Canadian dessert, most people I've served it to have never tried it, but they were certainly converts after one try. I really love it, and it's so much easier than making a pie.

This really is the perfect treat for this long weekend. I paired it up with pretty free printables from Polkadot Prints. We heart Canada, and we heart this strawberry cobbler. 😉

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup soft butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Slice large strawberries in half or quarters, and mix the sliced strawberries with up to ¼ cup of sugar, depending on the berries sweetness. Then divide the strawberry mixture among the 12 mini 4 oz. mason jars, or in the bottom of a 2 quart baking dish.
  • To prepare the cobbler topping, cream butter and 1 cup of sugar in the large bowl of a stand mixer. Add in the egg and vanilla extract, and mix well. Add the flour, salt, and baking powder and combine fully, without over mixing.
  • Divide the cobbler between the 12 mason jars, flatten into a disk and place over the strawberries. Or, if you're making one large strawberry cobbler, spoon the topping over top of the strawberries in the baking dish. Place mason jars on a cookie sheet for cooking.
  • Bake at 350 degrees, for about 20 min. for individual mason jar cobbers and 35 min. for one larger baking dish until the cobbler is golden brown. Allow to cool slightly and add the lids onto the mason jars to make a more portable treat. Serve with whip cream or vanilla ice cream if you like. This is delicious served warm or room temperature.

Cement Garden Markers

DIY cement garden markers.

DIY Garden Markers: these cement garden markers are long wearing and beautiful, perfect for marking any plants or herbs in your garden.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

When my friend told me she wanted to make a little herb garden in a spot near her doorway, I offered to make her some DIY garden markers for her. I've had these concrete moulds and stamps for quite a while, and thought it was time to get it out again.

make your own marker stones kit

It's really simple to use and the results are really lovely. I'm kind of in love with the concrete look. Anything in the garden made of cement just has that cool industrial vibe. The kit comes with the moulds, letter stamps, and some concrete stain, which we used to make her markers a terra cotta colour.

Materials:

  • concrete moulds
  • letter stamps for concrete
  • concrete
  • (optional) concrete stain
using cement moulds to create garden markers

How To Make Concrete Garden Markers

First you just mix up the cement in a pail, with the stain (or without) and some water.

Next choose which length of mould to use depending on the length of your word.  Fill it with wet cement.

Then you use the letters to spell out your word. Press the stamps into the wet cement and then remove them to leave the letter impression behind. Next you slip off the mould and leave your garden marker to harden.

I love how they turned out, so simple and sweet, and a little toadstool for good measure. 😉

My friend seemed to really like them, and said it would make it easy to send her kids out to get her some herbs, and not choose the wrong one. 🙂

With a little herb garden like this one just outside your back door, life really is a party.

Father's Day Dinner

Father's Day Party: this father's day dinner at home is the perfect family party with menu and decoration ideas.

Father's Day dinner.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

I wanted to share a great Father's Day party with you, in time to inspire you for your celebrations this weekend.  We had a fun family diner at home and it was the perfect way to celebrate.

Father's Day Party Decorations

I started out by coming up with a list of names for dad, with my girls. We used Dad, Father, Pa, Dada, and Pop -Dadasaurus Rex was also in the running, but too many letters for this project. 😉

father's day party decorations

Then I cut out the letters from some white card stock, and some natural brown coloured card stock. Once I had all the letters cut out, I hung up some strings of thread, and used clear tape to attach the letters. I love the simplicity of it.

DIY father's day party decorations

On the wall, I hung up my chalkboard and added a little Father's day message.

Father's Day Party Tablescape

On the table, I used brown paper as a table cloth -it's become a real favourite. This one was a roll of wrapping paper with simple white polka dots, but if you wanted to create the same look you could use white paint and a potato stamp on simple brown kraft paper.

father's day party tablescape

I made napkin tags, in keeping with the names over the table. I started with "Father", which led to "Mother", "Daughter No. 1" and finally "Daughter No. 2". The tags were made from craft paper, a tag punch and written on with a white paint pen.

Centrepiece

One of my very favourite elements of this Father's Day table was the centre piece of a rustic succulent planter.

father's day party centrepiece

I always love to add flowers to a table, but wanted something more masculine. For this arrangement, I used the cement planter, lined with plastic to protect the table, and a bunch of succulents from the garden centre.

succulent planter

I also found one in my garden that I added in. I love how it all turned out, and since I already had the container, it cost only around $10 for the plants, which is what I might have spent on cut flowers for a dinner, but this way I'll have them all summer long. You know how I'm not the best waterer, but this planter requires so little that I could put it anywhere. I really love how it turned out, with all the different textures and plants together.

Father's Day Dinner Menu

On the menu for our special Father's dinner, were veal and eggplant sandwiches.

father's day dinner menu

These are a real favourite of my husband and I. They're sold at the St. Lawrence Market, downtown, and whenever we get a chance to pick one up, we do. As I was thinking about some of my husband's favourites, I thought of the sandwich and decided to give a homemade version a try.

You start out with making the breaded veal cutlets, and breaded eggplant, by dredging the veal, and eggplant slices in flour, then egg, then bread crumbs. Fry in a frying pan until crispy and golden. Also, sautee some onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. To make the sandwich, start with a Kaiser bun, add your fried veal, and eggplant, and top with tomato sauce, and sautéed vegetables, add a few hot peppers if you like it hot and tomato sauce.

father's day dinner menu ideas

Serve the sandwiches with a salad for a delicious dinner. The sandwiches turned out to be so, so yummy. And, my husband loved them.

Just for fun and to match the hanging words for dad that we hung up over the table we had a mini version of the dad letters and glued them to some toothpicks for his sandwich.  Such a fun little detail.

Dessert

For dessert I wanted to do some homemade donuts -another real fav. of my guy, see the ones we made him for Father's Day two years ago here . This time I decided to try jelly donuts, with a dough made in the bread maker.  You can find the recipe for the Jelly Donuts here.

They were really delicious, and felt like a really special treat.  The kids really loved helping out by rolling the finished donuts in sugar, and made it a fun family activity.

Really want to impress your husband or dad for Father's day? Make him a dinner that consists of mostly fried foods. 😉 Unfortunately my Dad doesn't live nearby, but if he did he'd be all over these donuts too. He'll have to make do with the pictures this year. To my own Dad and amazing Husband, love you guys so, so much.

Adult lemonade stand with lemonade, fruit purees, soda or sparkling water and vodlka.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Why We Love This Idea

  • We love the nostalgia of an old fashioned lemonade stand.
  • Guests can help themselves throughout the party.
  • This is perfect for drinkers and non-drinkers to add alcohol or leave it out.
  • Everyone can mix their own combination of flavors, and try different options throughout the party.

We had a little get together on the weekend with some friends.  I thought it would be fun to have a lemonade stand buffet/bar for everyone. We love lemonade, did you see our lemonade themed party?

The lemonade stand was a great success, and the lemonade was really yummy. We love this idea for any get together.  It would be a fun addition to a summer birthday party, barbeque, wedding or baby shower.

One of the things we really love about this lemonade stand bar is that guests can help themselves throughout the party.  It's always great to offer guests their first drink and share all the great options.  Then welcome to help themselves to replenish their drink.  Keep an eye on things and make sure the ingredients or glasses don't need to be replenished throughout the party.

Lemonade Stand Set Up

We set it up in the backyard, where we were all hanging out, against our back fence. I used a card table, and leaned my chalkboard against the fence.

On the chalkboard, I wrote a few simple instructions. Guests were invited to help themselves to some lemonade, add a fruit puree if they liked, and top it off with some bubbles and the option of vodka.

It's such a great idea to have some simple instructions so guests know exactly what to do.  The chalkboard is made out of an old picture frame and has lots of character.  You could also make a sign on paper and place it in a pretty picture frame for the party.  On the top of our chalkboard we added some simple butterfly bunting.  This was used as party decor in other places too and looked great.

If you wanted things to look more like a traditional market stand, you could use 4 poles, one at each corner of the table, like bamboo garden stakes, and then drape some fabric and bunting across them to look like a real lemonade business.

Lemonade bar buffet

The Adult Lemonade Stand

For our lemonade stand we set up these ingredients for our guests:

  • lemonade
  • fresh fruit purees
  • sparkling water
  • ginger ale and sprite soda pop
  • vodka

Lemonade

I made some really easy frozen lemonade.  You could also use a good lemonade from a carton, or use a lemonade recipe to make your own.  Pink lemonade would be a fun option too.

We served the lemonade in a large punch bowl, with some large lemons used to add some lemon slices.

We also added ice to our punch bowl, but another option is to have a container of ice cubes at your lemonade stand so guests can help themselves and you don't have to worry about the ice cubes melting and diluting the lemonade over the course of an afternoon or evening.

A drink dispenser would be a great option for serving the lemonade also.  Lemonade can sometimes attract bees if set up outside, and drink dispenser can be a helpful way to keep them at bay.  You can also try burning a citronella candle to help keep them away.

How To Make Fresh Fruit Purees

The thing that really takes this lemonade stand to the next level is the fresh fruit purees.  This is such a great way for guests to customize their lemonade.  We found our guests loved trying all the different flavors and mixing them for great personalized flavors.

We made the fruit purees the night before, and served them in pretty glass bottles.  I love how they turned out and they were so delicious.

I made some different tags as the labels so everyone knew exactly what we had available.

We made:

  • strawberry
  • raspberry
  • blueberry

Tip: If you were making your fruit purees when the fruit is out of season, you can also use frozen fruit to make your purees.

To make the purees, I added about a pint of berries to the blender, added a cup of water, and a tablespoon or two of powdered sugar.  You can adjust the sugar depending on how sweet the berries are.

I pureed everything until the mixture was smooth.

Next, I poured the puree through a fine wire sieve to remove any seeds.

I used a funnel to pour it into the bottles and attached the labels to the bottles.  Store these in the refrigerator.

Tip: If you have any purees leftover after your party, you can pour them into ice cube trays and freeze them.  Store them in the freezer in a ziplock bag and then add them to your lemonade anytime.

Guests were able to add one of the puree flavours to their lemonade, or combine two or three to create a mixed berry lemonade flavor.

how to set up a grown up Lemonade Stand

Add Some Fizz

We also offered some ginger ale, or sparkling mineral water to top up the lemonade if anyone wanted to add some bubbles.

Alcoholic Option

To make this a grown-up lemonade stand it is fun to offer vodka for the adults to add to their lemonade as well.  Have the vodka available with a shot glass for easy measuring.

One of the great things about this setup is that it's easy for guests to choose an alcohol or non-alcohol option and make this as strong or weak of a cocktail as they like.

marson jar glasses

Serving Glasses

We served it all up in simple mason jars, with pretty striped straws with some book page butterflies.  You could also use regular glasses for serving.

adult Lemonade Stand ideas

It was great to get guests engaged in making their own drink concoctions as they arrived and the older kids seemed to really enjoy it too.  My little girls loved coming up with their own recipes for the perfect drink.  I highly recommend this idea for any summer party.  It was very successful lemonade stand.  By using frozen lemonade, and only making the simple purees from scratch, it kept everything simple to put together the night before as well.

Homemade custard creams.

Homemade Custard Creams Recipe: these British classics are even better when they're homemade. Recipe uses North American measurements.

Homemade custard cream recipe.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Homemade custard creams are the perfect vanilla sandwich cookies.  If you're not familiar with the English classic biscuit or cookie as we would say, than you're missing out. I spent a year in England, long ago, and I became a huge fan of the humble, store bought custard cream along side my cups of tea.  And this homemade custard creams recipe is the perfect way to make your own.

how to make custard creams

Perhaps it's because of the weather in England, or maybe not just the weather but the lack of central heating.  It tends a be a little damp and cold, even in the house.  And when you're feeling a little cold and damp there's nothing better than a hot cup of tea.  And my personal experience is that you are very, very rarely offered a cup of tea without also being offered a biscuit to go with your tea. If you're having a cup of tea in England you're likely to offered Penguin bars, jammie dodgers, or a custard cream to go with it. In North America we have lots of cookies, but we don't have these little biscuits to go with a cookie in quite the same way as the Brits do.  If you are a vanilla fan, you'll love the custard creams.  They were my favourite biscuit.

how to make custard creams

It is believed the custard cream originated in England around 1908 during the Victorian period. The store bought version of the cookie is stamped with an elaborate pattern of ferns and swirls in keeping with the Victorian obsession with ferns.  It's a British favourite to this day, and often considered the number one biscuit for dunking in tea.

North American Measurements

Custard creams can be a little tricky to locate at grocery stores outside of the UK.  And when you're searching for a homemade custard creams recipe they are usually in British measurements.  I've adjusted the custard creams biscuits recipe for North American bakers using cups instead of weights for measurement.  This should make it much easier for the North American baker to make these at home without having to get a British scale out to weight everything.

Bird's Custard Powder

Custard creams are a sandwich biscuit or cookie.  They are vanilla, but also have the distinct color and flavor of custard.  They're made with Bird's custard powder.  Two cookies are sandwich around a creamy custard buttercream filling.  You should be able to locate Birds custard powder at most grocery stores, but if you're having trouble finding it look on-line or at your local British shop.  The Bird's custard powder is a kind of like a vanilla pudding mix, but I would not try substituting it.  The cookies themselves are a kind of shortbread biscuit with a golden brown colour and a crumbly texture.  They really are the perfect accompaniment to a hot cup of tea.

Homemade vs. Store Bought

As with most things in life, the homemade version is way better than the store bought ones, and worth the extra effort. Yes, you could pick these up at store, and even if you live outside of England, you could find store bought custard creams on line or at a British food shop.  But the homemade version are so good.  These wonderful biscuits are so tender and flaky and crumbly mouth texture and with the sweet, soft middle.  They're sweet but not too sweet.  They really are the perfect thing to go with a cup of tea.  The Brits know their tea and they know their perfect biscuits to go with a cup of tea.

Heart Shaped

We've made our custard creams heart shaped for Valentine's day.  We used a simple heart for ours, and then made a dot pattern around the outside using a cocktail stick.

You can also buy the classic custard cream biscuit cutters with the classic custard cream pattern on them to make your homemade version look even more official.

Store your custard creams in an airtight container or biscuit tin.

Ingredients

For the Cookies

  • 1 ¼ cups all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Bird's custard powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter
  • ¼ cup vegetable shortening
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

For the Custard Cream Filling

  • 1 tablespoon Bird's custard powder
  • ½ cup icing sugar
  • ¼ cup soft butter
  • 1 teaspoon boiling water

Instructions

  • To make the biscuit dough, put the flour, custard powder, and baking powder into the bowl of a stand mixer and combine with a paddle attachment. Next, add 3 tablespoons butter, and vegetable shortening and combine until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Add the sugar and mix again. Next, beat the egg and milk together, and add to the stand mixture and combine until it forms a dough ball. Be careful not to over mix. Wrap dough in plastic wrap, and let rest in the fridge for 20 min.
  • Roll dough out on lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 4 mm. Cut out with a small heart cookie cutter. Use a toothpick to prick the outside edge of the heart to create the small hole pattern for half of the biscuits, to use as the tops of the sandwich cookies.
Bake on baking sheets at 350, for 10-14 min. until lightly browned at the edge. Let cool completely on a wire rack before filling.
  • To make the custard cream filling, put icing sugar, and custard powder, and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer and combine slowly at first and then faster until the mixture is fully combined. Add the hot water and fully combine until smooth, using a silicone spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  • To assemble the cookies, spread one half of a cookie with the custard cream filling using a palette knife, and sandwich with the top of cookie. Store in an airtight container.

Deck Irrigation System

How to instal a deck irrigation system.

Potted Plant Drip Irrigation System: how to install a deck or patio irrigation system and have beautiful pots even if you're a forgetful waterer.

How to instal a deck irrigation system.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This potted plant drip irrigation system was simple to install and one of the best investments I ever made in my garden.  I love it and you will love it too.  No more dried up and dead pots of plants with this system in place, and it's easy to install yourself.

Adding Pots To A Deck

Truth be told I'm not really a deck person. I prefer a patio, where you're really sitting "in" the garden. My house came with a deck. We did a bit of a redesign on it, opened it up and tried to make it feel a bit more like it was part of the garden, and not just a big dock like structure, but with no beautiful lake. Part of connecting it to the garden more has been by adding lots of pretty pots of flowers and green up the stairs, and onto the deck space.

I start out strong. In late May, and June I have lovely pots and fairy gardens full of potential. But then, I get busy, and it gets hot, and bad things sometimes happen. You know what I'm talking about? Do they really need to be watered every single day, what if I go away for a few days, what if I forget? The plants shrivel up and die. So sad, but so true.

Potted Plant Drip Irrigation

I've been eyeing a deck irrigation system for a couple of years in the Lee Valley catalogue. You know how dangerous this catalogue is, you discover lots of stuff that you never even knew existed and that now you NEED. Their stuff is really good quality, and they really stand behind their products. I once returned something I'd used for a year that broke and they gladly refunded my money. That being said, their stuff isn't cheap. The irrigation system basic kit is around $60 and the timer is another $60. I finally decided this year to go for it. $120 bucks later I was ready to install this bad boy.

y shut off valve for a garden hose

DIY Installation

It is really simple to instal yourself (especially if your husband does it for you). You start out connecting the main tubing to your outlet, and by using a "Y" you can still use your regular garden hose too, with a little on/off switch.

You install your timer here too. We set ours to 8 min., everyday of the week, at 7 am. It's rained a lot here lately, so we may still need to tweak it later, but it seems really easy to switch, including a manual override, and the ability to override the timer and switch it off if it's raining. You can set it for up to 3 times a day, for a duration of 1 min and up, and for any day/days of the week. I liked how easy it was to set, and how customizable it is.

installing irrigation hose to a deck

After the timer, the large hose runs around the perimeter of the deck. There are some little clips you can screw into the deck to secure it. They suggest attaching it underneath, and they're easy to install elbows for the corners. We ran ours around the sides, and under the stairs.

Adding Drip Lines

how to attach drip lines to a plant pot irrigation system

You then attach the smaller hoses that end with the drip heads in your pots. Based on your pot set-up, you determine where you want to make a connection, poke a hole in the large tubing with the special tool that comes with the kit, and use a connector to attach the smaller tubing. It takes a little hand strength to push in the connectors, but overall is pretty simple.

potted plant drip irrigation heads

One the end of the small tubing you push in the drip irrigation head, and use the spike on the bottom to anchor it in the soil of your pot. That's it.

Multiple Heads For Larger Pots

In order for larger pots to get enough water, and smaller pots not too much, the larger pots will need several heads in them. Our biggest pots have three in them, and the smaller pots just have one.  This allows you to mix lots of different sizes of pots and customize the water amount so it's just right for all of them.

potted plant drip irrigation

The tubing and hoses are not completely hidden. This might bother some people. I don't mind, since I know it means my flowers won't die this year. Once the plants grow and fill in more, it won't be as noticeable. When I see the hoses, I just see the work I don't have to do anymore. 😉

how to install drip irrigation on a deck or patio

I'll let you know how it all worked out at the end of the season in August, but so far, I think it was worth the investment.

Update: we've had this system in place for 8 years.  I love it, and highly recommend it.  I am adding it to my raised beds this year.

Winterizing The System

The system can stay outside over the winter.  To prepare it for winter you just remove the drip ends and use an air compressor to blow out all the water and make sure the lines are completely empty so they don't freeze and burst. In the spring, you just hook it up to the hose again, and you're back in business.

How to make strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream frosting.

Homemade Strawberry Swiss Meringue Frosting Recipe: made with fresh strawberries this Swiss meringue frosting is smooth, sweet, and delicious.

How to make strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream frosting.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Strawberry icing is such a perfect finishing touch to any cake or cupcake.  Cake is delicious, but it's the frosting that makes it everyone's favorite treat.  This strawberry icing recipe is a real favorite.  With fresh strawberries in the frosting, it packs lots of sweet flavor and its simple ingredients allow you to whip it up in no time with things you likely already have on hand. This frosting is light, creamy and pink and the most perfect strawberry icing.  It's excellent for topping a cake or cupcakes.

strawberry frosting recipe

Swiss Meringue

This Swiss meringue is made with cooked egg whites, granulated sugar, butter, and usually an additional flavoring like vanilla extract.

Swiss meringue is more stable than a traditional buttercream.  It will hold up better in the heat, if necessary.  It is also silky smooth.  Unlike butter cream it doesn't form a crust or dry out in the air.  And all these qualities make it a favorite of bakers.  But it's not difficult to make at home.

Swiss meringue buttercream also doesn't use any confectioners sugar and is instead sweetened with granulated sugar that is whipped into the egg whites to make a meringue.

Strawberry Swiss Meringue Buttercream Frosting

This Swiss meringue is made with real strawberries. This ensures that the buttercream has a fresh strawberry flavor that doesn't taste artificial.  The strawberries are made into a chunky puree and then added to the the frosting.  The ripe strawberries add a beautiful pink color to the frosting, and a great strawberry taste.  This fresh strawberry frosting is the perfect choice for any strawberry lover and one of the best ways to showcase delicious strawberries picked during strawberry season!

Strawberry Swiss Meringue

Tips for Making Perfect Swiss Meringue Buttercream

  • Getting your Swiss meringue the right temperature before adding the butter

One thing that is difficult about making Swiss meringue buttercream, is getting the whipped egg white and sugar meringue cool enough to add in the butter. It is crucial that this mixture is cool enough to not melt the butter, as if it is too hot your buttercream may separate with the addition of your butter.

Sometimes, I will put my meringue mixture in the fridge or in a large bowl of cold ice to ensure that it is cool enough to continue working with. The meringue is then whipped with a stand mixer on medium speed to incorporate the butter and fresh strawberry puree into this easy strawberry buttercream.

  • Strain the strawberries for a perfectly smooth Swiss meringue

We love the small chunks of real strawberry in this strawberry Swiss meringue but if you're using this for something where you want it to be perfect smooth and you don't want chunks of strawberries in your frosting, you can run your strawberry purée through a fine mesh sieve before adding it to the frosting to remove any chunks or seeds.

  • Switch from the whisk attachment to the paddle attachment at the end

In order to make your frosting as smooth as possible, I recommend switching from the whisk attachment to the paddle attachment or your mixer for the last few minutes of mixing to work out any large pockets of air incorporated during the whipping.

This perfect pink frosting is a delicious topping to all sorts of cakes.  There are lots of different ways you can use this homemade strawberry buttercream. Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups fresh strawberries
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1½ cups unsalted butter cut into tablespoons, at room temperature

Instructions

  • To make the strawberry Swiss meringue puree the strawberries in a food processor, leaving some small chunks; set aside.
  • Combine the egg whites and sugar in the heatproof bowl of a stand mixer over a pan of simmering water. Whisk constantly by hand until the mixture is warm to the touch and the sugar has dissolved (the mixture should feel completely smooth when rubbed between your fingertips).
  • Place the bowl in the stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Mix until stiff peaks form. Continue mixing until the mixture is fluffy and glossy, and completely cool (test by touching the bottom of the bowl), about 10 minutes.
  • Reduce the mixer speed to medium-low and add the butter a few tablespoons at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Once all the butter has been added, scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula and switch to the paddle attachment; continue beating on low speed until all air bubbles are gone, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the strawberry puree and beat until combined. Use to frost a 2 layer 8-inch cake or 24 cupcakes.

How to make a fairy garden in a container.

Fairy Gardens For Kids: kids can paint their own fairy houses, choose plants, and create their own fairy garden containers to grow and play with all summer.

How to make a fairy garden in a container.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

It's spring and time to make fairy gardens for kids. My little girls couldn't wait to get started on making theirs this year.

Making Fairy Houses

We started out with little bird houses from the dollar store. I've seen lots of others use the bird houses too, but I think the key to really making them look like fairy house is to cut off the little bird perch, and replace it with a little fairy door.

I made my doors out of a paint stick. I cut off a small piece with a hand saw and nailed it on with a finishing nail, leaving the nail out a little to resemble a door handle. After we added our doors, my kids painted them up with craft paints.

painting fairy houses

We added glitter to some of the houses, and then sealed them with a spray varnish. We also removed the little hook in the roof that came with the houses to hang them up, and replaced them with little ribbon flags, made from ribbon, hot glue and a plastic toothpick. I love how pretty they all look in their pastel colours.

Fairy Garden Containers

After the houses were built it was time for the fun part, creating the planters.  Containers especially  perfect for making fairy gardens for kids, since they can create their own unique space.  The containers are also great for kids to be able to play in them, and see and reach everything really easily once they're planted.

I like to use vintage containers, like galvanized buckets, and old enamelware. I've picked it up over the years at second hand stores and antique fairs.

adding drainage holes to make a container garden

Just make sure that you add some holes for drainage so excess water can drip out. Just use a sharp nail and a hammer to make lots of small holes -obviously a grownup job.

Easy Fairy Garden Plants

We planted ours with small basket filler plants. Remember that the plants will grow, and you still want to be able to see the scene you've created, so don't over plant the planter.

fairy gardens for kids

My daughter Maddie made the yellow fairy house and picked her own yellow plants.  It's fun to bring kids to the garden centre and let them pick out their own plants for a project like this.  You might have to steer them a little in terms of sun or shade loving plants, annuals, and price.  It's always fun to see what they pick out, and many nurseries now have their own fairy garden plant section to help select ones that will do well.  I usually just go with small annuals in cell packs.  The price is right and they usually have lots with small flowers that bloom all summer.

Adding Fairy Garden Accessories and Decor

We added some fun details like a rock pebble path to the door, and a sweet little clothes line with tiny clothes pins, and silk flower petal clothes hanging on the line.

My other daughter Paige also made her own garden, in her favourite colours.

We used some small log rounds to make the path to her fairy's door. I also used some chalkboard plant markers to make a sweet little street sign.

The mushroom is a dollar store mushroom, with a spray paint makeover. I love the sweet little garden chair, and rubber boots -both found at a miniature store.

fairy garden

After everything was all arranged I wanted to add some moss.  I also dug up some creeping thyme for my birthday party scene -see all the details of how I made it here. I didn't have enough thyme to do everywhere.  So I also dug up some moss from a spot on the far side of my house where it's very shady, and some moss grows. The moss and thyme were the perfect finishing touches.  If you didn't have any that you could dig up around your house you could buy either of these at the garden centre.

birthday party fairy garden

I really like how all the gardens look together, running down the stairs of the deck. Some are filled with just flowers, and some have the fairy gardens, with all the galvanized pots and enamelware mixed together.

It's the perfect spot for my kids and their friends to play with them.  We've had so much fun creating them and now looking after them and watching them grow.  Fairy gardens are the perfect way to get kids interested in gardening.

Homemade Flatbread Crackers Recipe

Homemade flatbread crackers.

Flatbread Crackers: These homemade flatbread crackers are easy to make, and so much better than store bought. Guests will be so impressed.

Homemade flatbread crackers.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This flatbread cracker recipe is very easy and made from pantry ingredients.  It's become a favourite of mine.  It's perfect for any cheese board, or charcuterie board and guests can never believe that the crackers are homemade.

Yes, you can make your own homemade crackers. And yes, they are worth it. This recipe is easy, simple to change up flavour wise, and so, so yummy.

How to make Flatbread Crackers

So I was at a swanky cocktail reception, downtown about a month ago, and meandered over to their cheese board, like you do, and noticed the amazing handmade looking, artisan flatbread crackers and thought to myself, like every blogger does, maybe I could make those. When I got home I started to experiment. I've made this recipe so many times since, and  it is so good.

Picnics

These crackers are great for a summer picnic. I packed them up with some cheese, nuts, dried fruit, red pepper honey, and individual bottles of sparkling wine for the perfect portable picnic feast.

Charcuterie Boards

These delicious crackers are not just for picnics though, now that charcuterie boards have become so popular as the starter for a meal, or indeed as the whole meal!  These thin ovals are light, crispy, crunchy and perfect with a variety of cheeses and a bottle of wine.  Or try them with your favorite dip.  They add so much interest and wow factor to your charcuterie board. Make some with different flavors and add them all to your appetizer board to really impress.  You will love this delicious recipe.

Making your own crackers might seem a little next level.  But I promise these crackers are pretty simple to put together and the taste really is worth the extra effort.  I think they're especially worth it when you're entertaining.  They're guaranteed to impress.  And if you're serving a charcuterie board, changes are the rest of the ingredients are pretty easy to put together.  You're going to buy the cheese the meat, add some little extras like fruit, nuts, chutney.  All of these are most likely very easy to prep, so you can put a little extra effort into the crackers.  Honestly they're worth it.

picnic by the edge of a pond

Gift Giving

These amazing handmade flatbread crackers are also a great hostess gift.  They're sure to be impressed when the recipient hears that you made them yourself.  Pair them with some cheese and wine for a guaranteed big hit.  The large pieces look amazing packaged up in airtight cello bags, tied with some ribbon for gift giving.

Shaping the Crackers

I think these rustic crackers look really great as large thin ovals.  Each one is a little different and that adds to their artisanal handmade charm.  If you're serving these on a charcuterie board, leave some whole.  You can also break some into smaller pieces.  We love how even when they're broken into individual crackers, each cracker piece is slightly different in terms of shapes and sizes.  You can use cookie cutters to shape the crackers, or cut the dough into even squares using a pizza cut before baking, but I love the look of the rough edges of the large ovals.

Flatbread Crackers for a picnic

Try Different Flavourings

We made our crispy crackers with salt and pepper, but when you make your own crackers you can substitute pepper for other flavourings. You might try adding fresh herbs like fresh rosemary, or thyme, or some spices like garlic powder, or cayenne pepper.   Some parmesan cheese would be a great addition.  Or try adding nuts or cumin seeds, fennel seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds or pumpkin seeds. Use your imagination for your own cracker flavor creations and enjoy!

flatbread crackers recipe

Rolling the Dough

One of the keys to making these flatbread cracker is making the dough as thin as possible.  This creates a nice light, and crispy flat bread cracker.  You can use a rolling pin to roll out the crackers, which is what I usually do.  I usually roll the dough out right onto a sheet of parchment paper, so it's really easy to transfer on to the baking sheet to cook it.

If you have a pasta machine though, you might find it easy to run the dough through the pasta roller to get a nice thin, and uniform dough sheet.  Start out on the thickest setting and work your way down to the thinner settings.  Ideally you want your dough to be about ⅛ inch thick, or even thinner.  You can experiment a little and see what your favourite is.  I think the thinner the dough the better the cracker.

homemade Cracker recipe

Storing Homemade Crackers

These crackers are so delicious because they're so nice and crispy.  They lose a lot of their charm if become chewy.  The first step in creating nice crisp crackers is to roll out the dough as thin as possible.  The second step is to store them properly.  You will want to store any leftover crackers in an airtight container in a cool dry place.  Stored this way they will last sometime, but they may go stale and lose their crispness quite quickly.  They are better eaten fresh.  When entertaining, try and make these crackers the day of for the best results.  If you're giving these crackers as a gift, be sure to they're in an airtight container or a cellophane bag that is tied tightly to keep them as crisp as possible.

And one more tip, when you're creating your charcuterie board for entertaining, make sure to add your crackers just before serving.  Your board filled with cheese, meats, dips, and accompaniments can be stored in the fridge after making it, but before guests arrive.  But don't add the crackers and put them in the fridge too.  They will lose their crispness.  Add your crackers to the board after you take it out of the fridge and just before serving.  And don't put your crackers next to anything wet or soggy, like grapes that are wet from washing them, or veggies.  Serve them in a dry location on your cheese board or in a separate basket

This is one of those great recipes that you will make again and again.  It's easy, and made with simple ingredients you probably have on hand.  The look and the taste of these rustic flatbread is sure to impress anyone you serve them to.

Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ - ½ teaspoon of coarsely ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup water
  • ⅓ cup olive oil plus more for brushing
  • flaky sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450°F
  • Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add very coarsely freshly ground black pepper to taste and stir dry ingredients to incorporate. Make a well in centre, then add water and oil and gradually stir into the flour with a wooden spoon until a dough forms.
  • Knead dough gently on a work surface 4 or 5 times into a smooth ball. Divide dough into 6 equal pieces and roll out each of the dough pieces with a rolling pin on a lightly floured work surface, into a rustic long baton shape. The rolled dough should be very thin. Lightly brush the top of the flatbread with additional olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and a little more pepper. (Roll out dough on a piece of parchment paper and transfer the whole sheet of parchment paper with the cracker dough on top to the cookie sheet, or just spray baking tray with cooking spray and bake directly on baking sheet.)
  • Bake the remaining dough in batches, until flatbread crackers are pale golden brown, 8 to 10 min. Let the baked crackers cool on wire racks. Flatbread crackers can be made 2 days ahead and cooled completely, then kept in an airtight container at room temperature.

Cook's Note: Substitute pepper for other flavouring. You might try fresh herbs like rosemary, or thyme, or some parmesan cheese, or try adding nuts or seeds. Use your imagination and enjoy!

Birthday Fairy Garden

Fairy garden mini tea party picnic set up.

Birthday Fairy Garden: the fairies celebrating a birthday in the fairy garden with miniature tea and cupcakes, bunting, party hats and gifts.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Today I want to share a new fairy garden with you, that is definitely a new favourite. Just when you thought it couldn't get any cuter, it did. I  made the sweetest little birthday fairy garden.  The party is all ready, just waiting for some fairies to fly down and enjoy it.

I've been working on our fairy gardens with my little girls this weekend, just like the ones we posted about here.  We make them every year, and we really look forward to it year after year.

Birthday Fairy Garden

DIY Fairy Garden Furniture

I started out with this sweet little table, made out of popsicle sticks, hot glued together and spray painted pink.

For chairs, our two little fairies each have a thimble to relax on.

Fairy Birthday Tea Party

On the table I arranged this sweet little tea party set. I found it at a miniature store.

fairy garden tea party

We've had this set in fairy gardens for the last couple of years, but because it's real china, it can withstand the weather -worth the $10 it cost.

What does every birthday party around here need? Cupcakes. I used some polymer clay to make these teeny, tiny cupcakes. I kind of love them. After baking them for about 15 min, according to the package directions, they are nice and hard and should be weather safe.  Find more detailed instructions on how to make the fairy sized polymer cupcakes here.

Here is one on a penny, to give you a sense of scale, aren't they itsy, bitsy? Perfect for a little fairy.

Fairy Garden Party Bunting

Once I got into party mode, I wanted to make a little bunting.

I used hot glue to attach some little pink flags to some baker's twine and tied them to some skewers. I think it looks so sweet hanging over the table.

Fairy Party Hats

Every birthday needs party hats. I made them out of a little ribbon, hot glue, and pom poms.

Fairy Presents

And last but not least, we needed a few little prezzies.

These are made out of a tiny piece of a old foam mat, the kind that fit together like a puzzle. I just used a regular knife to cut out a little rectangle, and tied a little satin ribbon on to make it look like a present.  These should fare well out in the weather.

Party Time

I also used my dollar store mushroom that got a pink stray paint makeover. We set up our little birthday party on a nice little meadow of creeping thyme. I added a little moss around the sides too.

Campfire Paninis

Campfire paninis on a plate.

Campfire Paninis are the perfect campfing food. Start with great bread, add your toppings and use a rock covered in tinfoil to make your own DIY rustic campfire paninis press.

Campfire paninis on a plate.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Why We Love This Recipe

  • It's super simple -no paninis press required.
  • The sandwiches are toasty, crispie and flattened -just like your favorite at home paninis.
  • These sandwiches are easy to make.
  • Everyone can make their own and custimize it with their own favorite toppings. (Make it regular, dairyfree, gluten free, or vegan)

Camping is such a fun activity, and making special food over the campfire is a highlight. Check out our campfire cinnimon rolls, or our campfire muffins made in orange peels. And what could be better on a camping trip than a gourmet s'mores charcuterie board?

These campfire paninis are so easy to make and so delicious. Use my favorite combination of toppings, or something different. And use our rock hack to make crusty, crunchie, perfectly toasted pannis around the campfire.

Ingredients

My very favourite panini combo is hot salami, roasted red pepper, pesto, and bocconcini mozzarella.

You can use any combination of meat, cheese, and condiments that you love.

  • Bread -Choose a nice loaf, we used French bread, and cut your bread quite thickly.
  • Hot Salami -I like to add alittle heat with hot salami, but regular is great too if you prefer something more mild.
  • Roasted Red Peppers -I use the jarred kind, they're quick and easy. You could use fresh red peppers and roast them over the campfire, then remove the peel and core.
  • Pesto -jared pesto makes this sandwich easy, but fresh woud taste even better.
  • Bocconcini Mozzarella -a mild boccocini is delicious and creamy, and has a great pull factor when melted, but any favorite cheese is great.

Alternatives

For a really kid friendly version, try a classic grilled cheese cooked this way.

Equipment -DIY Campfire Panini Press

Start out with a grill on the fire, and cover it with a little foil, or use a pan, like an iron skillet. To make our camping version of a panini press you also need to find a good rock, with a flat side.

Cover the rock in foil.

This is your campfire panini press.

  • aluminum foil covered grill over the campfire
  • aluminum foil covered flat rock

Method

  1. Step 1: Cut the bocconcini ball into slices, and layer the meat, cheese, and roasted red pepper, on thickly sliced French bread Add some pesto sauce. Once the sandwich is made, brush the two outer sides with olive oil, just like a regular panini.

2. Step 2: To make your campfire panini press, wrap a large rock that is flat on one side with aluminum foil. Cover your campfire grill with aluminum foil.

3. Step 3: Place your sandwich on the grill and put the rock on top to flatten it. Cook until the bottom is toasted and then flip over to the other side and cook until it's toasted and the cheese is melted. Then enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use a campfire to cook these?

No, you could also use a camp stove instead with a frying pan, and your rock on top.

Can you make these veggie?

Yes, change out the meat and cheese for a veggie option like vegan cheese.

What would a kid-friendly option be?

If your kids like grilled cheese, make a version with just their favorite cheese inside.

Oatmeal Cookie Bars -Flapjacks

May 15, 2013 · 2 Comments

Oatmeal cookie bars.

Oatmeal Cookie Bars Recipe: These are like a combination between a granola bar and oatmeal cookies. Often called Flapjacks in England.

Oatmeal cookie bars.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This Oatmeal Cookie Bars Recipe is a favourite of mine. Loved by kids and parents alike. It's perfect as a snack, school lunch addition, or with a cup of tea.

British Flapjacks

Many years ago I had the opportunity to live in England for a year, while I went to school there. I learned a whole new vocabulary, developed a love of Sunday afternoon walks followed by an ice cream with a Flake in it, and found lots of new foods to love.

One of the things I had there for the first time were flapjacks. They're kind of a cross between an oatmeal cookie and a granola bar, usually called an oatmeal cookie bar here in North America. I haven't had one since I lived in England 20 years ago -yes I was very young, but I still remember how yummy they were.

Here lots of people add chocolate chips or raisins to them, but I really prefer them plain. If you're a big can of oatmeal raisin cookies, or oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, then you might disagree with me.

Very Quick and Easy Recipe

These are super easy to make, and my whole family loves them. I've made them now many, many times. They're become a old standby because they're an easy recipe to make and a great treat. They're so quick to make that you don't need a special occasion to make this great recipe.

These oatmeal cookie bars are  much quicker and easier to make than cookies, because you don't have to spoon out the cookie dough into individual cookies. Bake them in one baking dish, and slice them into bars for serving. Also they're only 4 or 5 ingredients easy to find at the grocery store, or in your pantry. You can stir them together in one pan, you don't even need to get your electric mixer or cookie sheets out to make them. Find the full recipe below. If you have a sweet tooth you'll love this tasty dessert bar. The hardest part about making these, is to try and not eat them all right away. Hopefully you still have some the next day.

Granola Bar or Oatmeal Cookie?

These bar cookies are like the perfect cross between a granola bar and an oatmeal cookie. They're a little sweeter than some granola bars. But the texture and thickness make them more like a granola bar. These make a chewy bar. I prefer to cut them in bar form, but you can cut them into squares if you like. These chewy oatmeal cookie bars a great addition to a bake sale. Or wrap these delicious cookie bars in parchment paper like a traditional granola bar and bring them on a hike or add to a packed lunch, or picnic for a sweet treat.

Which Oats To Use In Oatmeal Cookie Bars Recipe

I like to combine some large flake and regular flake oats for this recipe. I think the two different kinds gives the bars a nice texture. But if you don't have the large flake oats on hand, or prefer just regular flake oats feel free to use just those.

This recipe is very forgiving. I use quick-cooking oats, but you can substitute in instant oats, or old fashioned oats if that's what you have on-hand.

Other Substitutions In Oatmeal Cookie Bars Recipe

I make these bars with salted butter. If you prefer feel free to use unsalted butter, and add some sea salt to the recipe. For ½ cup of unsalted butter add ½ teaspoon salt.

I use light brown sugar for this recipe, but feel free to substitute dark brown sugar if you prefer it.

These dessert bars are best stored at room temperature in an airtight container to maintain their chewy texture.

Teacup Candles: upcycle your old vintage teacups by turning them into candles. Use our tricks to save money using dollarstore candles, and crayons.
candles made from vintage teacups

I've been wanting to make some Teacup Candles for a while now, and thought Mother's Day was the perfect occasion.  They would be really sweet for just about any occasion though.  old teacups turned into candles

Teacup Candle Materials:

  • vintage teacups
  • dollarstore candles or wax and wicks
  • pink crayons
  • old tin can

I started out with some thrift store teacups (5$ each, on half price day) and candles from the dollar store($1.25 for five).

vintage teacups from the thrift store

I found that the cheapest way to make these was to just melt down some inexpensive candles from the dollar store, and use the wick from them for my new candles.  You could also buy wax and wicks separately though too.

How To Make Teacup Candles

1. Melt Your Wax

I used an old tin can to hold my wax, and made a double boiler, by putting it in a pan of boiling water.  You can also use a regular double boiler, but this way clean up is much easier.

I melted my dollar store candles, but you could also use plain wax.  I had some old beeswax sheets so I threw them in as well, which gave the wax a beautiful smell.

2. Add Colour With Old Crayons

The beeswax I added was kind of yellowish, so I decided to throw in a couple pink crayons to colour the wax.  This was an old Girl Guide trick that came in handy. 😉  Use crayons in any colour to colour your wax, or leave it white.

3. Ready To Pour

After the wax was all melted, I fished out the wicks and secured them in the teacups with popsicle sticks. Then, just pour the wax in, slowly.

Why We Love This Party

  • Chocolate! It's perfect for a chocolate lover.
  • Make your own chocolate bars is a such a fun party activity.
  • This chocolate dessert table is impressive and delicious.
  • It's great for boys or girls, and almost any age group will love it.

Over the weekend we had a Chocolate Themed Party to celebrate my daughter Maddie's sixth birthday, and I'm so excited to share all the fun details with you. Maddie loves chocolate, so when we started talking themes months ago, chocolate came out the clear winner. This is a really fun idea for birthday parties for any chocolate lover, but could also be great as a theme for a girls night, a bridal shower, valentine's day party, or baby showers. We're excited to share all our chocolate party ideas with you.

Chocolate Themed Party Decorations

We had to get a little creative when it came go chocolate themed party decor. Here's some of the fun ideas we came up with to go with our chocolate theme.

  • brown steamers
  • brown polka dot balloons
  • chocolate scented candles
  • "chocolate" flowers
  • brown paper lanterns and tissue paper pom poms
  • chocolate soap

The theme set the stage for a simple colour scheme for the party of brown and white.

Brown and white ruffled streamer decorations for a chocolate party.

Streamers

I ordered some brown streamers on-line and to dress them up a little, I ruffled them on the sewing machine with some white. They turned out so cute, I love them. It's quite easy to do if you have a sewing machine. Just adjust your stitch to a long stitch and adjust your tension then feed the streamers through your machine to create ruffle. I think I'll be ruffling lots of streamers in the future. 😉 To decorate the fireplace and the stairs I layered up the streamers with some pom pom yarn and brown ribbon. I love the layered, feminine look.

Balloons

I also ordered a bunch of brown polka dot balloons. on-line.

Hershey Kiss

We happened to have a cute little Hershey kiss guy that looked pretty cute on the couch.

Chocolate Flowers

I wanted to do some flowers for the party. I picked some pussy willows, and bought some white tulips, but I also wanted to incorporate some chocolate. So, I decided to make some "chocolate flowers". I used some snack size chocolate bars and smarties and some washi tape.

I just cut a piece of wire for the stem, and used the tape to connect it to the chocolate bar, and wrap the wire.

They were pretty easy to make, and kind of a fun detail.

Chocolate Candles

Another fun detail, were the chocolate scented candles I found and put in simple glass vases on the table. The room smelt so, so chocolatey!

I filled another vase with just pussy willows and chocolate flowers, and used them as part of the centerpiece on the dessert table.

Paper Lanterns and Pom Poms

Above the dessert table was one of my favourite things, a bouquet of paper lanterns and tissue paper and paper doilie pom poms hanging down with streamers and ribbons. These were so pretty, and a great way to add a little feminine charm to a brown and white colour scheme.

Chocolate Soap

Another fun little detail, I picked up some chocolate soap from the body shop for the powder room.

The kids had a great time deciding what kind of chocolate bar to make, and adding lots of different ingredients to their chocolate. This was the perfect way to create a bit of a Willy Wonka experience for the kids.

After they were done, we popped them into the fridge to set. Before the party I cut paper to fit the size of the chocolate bars, and the party guests had a great time coming up with a name for their new chocolate bars, and decorating the labels.

Once the chocolate was all set up we popped the bars of chocolate out of the molds, wrapped them in foil, added the labels and put them into their loot bags, as a take home party favor.

I loved how they turned out, and the kids thought it was super cool that they could invent their own new kind of chocolate bar. This was my favorite activity at the party, and a huge hit with everyone.

Along with their newly invented chocolate bars we also included some mini chocolate bars and chocolate scented play dough for a fun chocolate themed take home party favors for our guests.

Chocolate Piñata

Along with playing and eating, the birthday girl also requested we have a piñata. Chocolate themed piñata's are a little hard to come by, so what's a girl to do? Make your own. I used the Oh Happy Day tutorial  to make an "M" for Maddie.

Then, I used brown tissue paper, to make the fringe decorations. We filled it up with mini chocolate candy. We made ours into a pull string style, instead of a smash one -I'm not too keen on children welding a baseball bat in my living room. 😉

It was lots of fun and the treats got added to their loot bags.

Chocolate Dessert Table

One of the highlights of the Chocolate Party was the amazing Chocolate Dessert Table. In fact this is what might have sealed the theme for Maddie my little chocolate connoisseur. We wanted to create a little world of chocolate for everyone to enjoy.

I'm actually not the biggest chocolate food fan myself, but I pulled out all my favourite chocolate recipes and sweet treats for this one. Here's what we had

  • one bowl easy brownies
  • chocolate coconut and oatmeal no-bake cookies
  • homemade toffee and chocolate chip cookies
  • triple chocolate mousse cake
  • chocolate pudding
  • donuts
  • chocolate fondue
  • turtles
  • chocolate covered almonds
  • Plus we also had chocolate milkshakes, and chocolate fondue
Chocolate themed dessert table with pudding, cake, donuts, cookies and more.

I only ended up making a few of the treats myself, so here's all my secrets to an impressive, but not too tricky chocolate dessert table.

Some Homemade Chocolate Treats

I baked the toffee and chocolate chip cookies from one of our favourite family recipes.  Also I made the chocolate coconut cookies. Both recipes are pretty quick and easy, make a fairly large batch, and are tried and true.

Chocolate pudding served in mini mason jars with a small silver spoon.

I made the yummy chocolate pudding from a box, and served it in mini mason jars, with sweet little silver teaspoons.

Chocolate brownies on a cake plate with brown washi tape flags in them.

The brownies are also from a mix (shhh). I made them even sweeter with little brown flags made from cute toothpicks and a little washi tape for flags. So simple and so cute for a special occasion.

Assorted chocolate donuts on a glass tiered serving tray on a chocolate themed dessert table.

Store Bought Chocolate Treats

We picked up the donuts the morning of the party. I asked Maddie what kind of chocolate donuts she wanted, and listed them all off. She said, "why not all them Mom?" Why not? So we got a few of each. I made little pom poms from some of the fringed streamers and tied them with a little brown baker's twine on to a white toothpick. Love the little details, and they were supper easy.

Maddie asked specifically for a birthday cake, since we usually have cupcakes. I didn't have an amazing chocolate cake recipe, so I decided to order a little one from our favourite local bakery. Great decision. It was delicious, and made the baking load for this party really manageable.

Chocolate treats on a chocolate themed desssert table.

We also had a few of our favourite chocolates on the dessert table -turtles, and chocolate covered almonds.

I used a lot of glass dessert plates and serving pieces and wanted to add in a little more rustic and vintage feel, so I used a few little wooden boxes, a scramble tile "Madeline", my chocolate flowers and pussy willows, an antique scale and some of the birthday party invitation chocolate bars -more on those and the free printable chocolate bar party invitations here.

Love how these little touches, made it all feel a little more relaxed and fun.  You can also find the free printable food labels here.

Chocolate Fondue

I did want to have a bit of fruit available, so I did a milk chocolate fondue and fruit tray. We served the fondue in the kitchen, not on the dessert table, to make it a little easier for everyone,. I also used some plastic lined little paper cups, sometimes used for candy, so the kids could have there own little container of fondue. (Ever shared a fondue with little ones, here's a great solution for the double dippers.).

This is a great alternative to a chocolate fountain. It's much easier to manage, with less mess, and no danger of double dipping.

Drinks

During dessert my husband made everyone chocolate milk shakes, which we served with striped brown paper straws. We also had mini water bottles (love this size for kid's parties).

The chocolate party was a great theme, and made for a truly "sweet" party!

With a Chocolate Themed Party like this to celebrate a special birthday, life really is a party! Happy Birthday Maddie!

A "Favourite Things" 50th Birthday

Favourite Things 50th Birthday Party: the perfect 50th birthday party ideas for your husband. Favourite food, favourite dessert, and favourite people.

Favourite things themed birthday party.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

My husband turned 50 yesterday (did I mention I'm much younger) 😉 and we had a little get together with all his favourite things to celebrate. I had a little trouble settling on a 50th birthday party ideas for my husband.  In years past we'd already done his Oscar the Grouch Party, and our Beer/Root Beer Tasting parties.  I  had visions of a big bash for his 50th, but he wanted to keep it a little more low key.

He wanted just a few close, close friends for an intimate dinner. Just his very favourite peeps, and take-out fried chicken, also a favourite, and so I thought a favourite things party would be a perfect theme.

50th Birthday Decor

The colour scheme for the party was kraft paper brown, silver and white. I ordered the big, big, silver 50 shaped balloons, loved them.

For the table I started with a simple kraft paper table runner, (quickly becoming one of my favourites). 😉

I used simple white plates, and dressed up the paper bags with the cutlery in them, by stamping them with white polka dots, and tying them with a little twine and pompom yarn.

The centre piece was a lot of fun to create. I wanted to add a little vintage feel to the table, so I used mason jars. Some were filled with white tulips, and the rest had black and white photos of my husband throughout his 50 years, that I printed out on the computer. I love how it turned out, so easy and so pretty.

Favourite Things Dinner

We had a really fun and super easy dinner of take-out fried chicken.  My husband and I have had a long held debate about which take-out fried chicken is the best, so we thought we'd have a little taste test to settle it.

We picked up some KFC, Church's (my husband is so excited it's finally available in Canada!), Mary Browns, and Popeyes. Everyone had a great time trying everything and all the sides, and it made the meal so easy for me. Perfect.

Afterward everyone had a chance to vote on their favourite fried chicken.  It was a really fun interactive dinner, with lots of fun debate about which food was best from chicken to all the side dishes.

Favourite Things Dessert Table

I knew I wanted to do a fun dessert table on the buffet with all my husbands favourite desserts. We usually have a big, pink, and glittery Eiffel Tower art piece hanging in the dinning room, but I knew it wouldn't work so well to create a dessert table that wasn't too girly. I found a great old picture at a thrift store a while ago, and spray painted the frame white and the picture with chalk board paint to create a beautiful chalk board.

This project turned out great and I'm sure I'll be able to use it over and over. To dress it up for the party, I made some tissue paper tassels. They were easy to make and really added a little party atmosphere.

mens 50th birthday party favourite things dessert table

On the dessert table I tried to incorporate lots of my husband's favourites. I wanted it to be a little more masculine than the usual dessert table, so I incorporated some of his favourite hobbies, by stacking some of his favourite books, and adding a few Ferrari model cars.

Men's 50th birthday cookies

I made a coconut cream pie with a washi tape bunting on top. We also had some coconut and vanilla cupcakes, and some shortbread.  These are all favourites of my husband.

50 Favourite Things About You

A few weeks before the party, I emailed the guests and asked everyone to bring some cards with their favourite things about Roland, so we could present him with 50 cards for his 50th birthday. In the entrance I set up a place for our "50 favourite things about Roland".

Best Moist Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Carrot cake recipe.

Carrot Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe: the perfect moist dense carrot cake with raisins, pineapple and nuts and a delicious cream cheese icing.

Carrot cake recipe.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

This carrot cake with cream cheese frosting recipe is a favourite of mine.  This three layer carrot cake is very moist, and the sweet, and creamy cream cheese frosting goes with it perfectly.  The cake itself is not your regular carrot cake.  It is loaded with grated carrots, crushed pineapple, raisins, walnuts, and warm spices that keep it moist and make it full of flavor.

I've always been a big fan of carrot cake, and the more stuff in it the better.  This carrot cake recipe is definitely worth trying if you're a carrot cake fan.  The frosting is delicious too, and the perfect amount for the cake. The three cake layers all also very impressive, which makes this cake perfect for any special occasions like Easter, Mother's Day, or a birthday celebration.

I first had this cake many years ago at a friends house.  It was her Grandmother Lucy's old recipe, and a bit of a family treasure.  It was the best carrot cake I had ever had before.  We enjoyed it with a cup of tea and by the time we were finished I was asking her for the recipe.  She kindly gave it to me and I've been making her Grandma Lucy's carrot cake with cream cheese frosting ever since.  And on several occasions when I've made it for others, I've been asked for the recipe as well and happily passed on Grandma Lucy's recipe to my family and friends.

The extraordinary thing about this carrot cake recipe is that it has so many great extras in it, creating the most moist and delicious carrot cake ever.

Carrot Cake

Carrot cake can unfortunately be dry sometimes.  There's nothing worse than the disappointment of biting into a dry slice of carrot cake.  This carrot cake recipe though, is super moist.  The moist cake is insured by the addition of not just grated carrots, but also crushed pineapple.  The pineapple gives the cake amazing flavour, but also ensures a nice moist texture as well.  It's such a great addition to the cake.  This cake is also loaded with dried fruits and nuts that give it wonderful richness.  There are two kinds of raisins in this cake, regular raisins and golden raisins.  Golden raisins are typically softer, sweeter, and moister than regular raisins, and such a great addition to this cake. The walnuts add a nice crunch to the cake.  If you prefer, or need to make this cake nut free you can leave them out.

carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

Adding grated carrot to cakes was a war time measure when sugar was in short supply.  It helped add sweetness to cakes so that wartime cooks could use less sugar.  Everyone loved it some much that after the war it continued to be a favourite.  We peeled and grated our large fresh carrots with the fine side of box grater.  You can also use a food processor to make the grating even faster.  I won't recommend using pre-shredded carrots from the grocery store in this recipe because they're too coarsely grated and also they tend to dry out and don't add much moisture to the cake.  For the best results use freshly grated large carrots.

This cake uses butter instead of oil.  The butter adds the best flavor and contributes to the denseness of the cake.

Any classic carrot cake recipe also includes an array of warm spices.  We used ground cinnamon and allspice.  This recipe has a perfect amount of spices, that create a flavourful cake but don't overpower the whole cake.

Cream Cheese Frosting

This cake has the best cream cheese frosting.  It is the perfect addition to this delicious cake.  It's sweet and creamy and an easy recipe to put together.   Be sure to use room temperature cream cheese and butter to make the frosting so that they will easily incorporate with the powdered sugar and create a smooth lump free icing.

No need for a piping bag to ice the finished cake.  After it's completely cooled use an offset spatula to spread the frosting evenly between the layers, and then all over the finished homemade carrot cake.

Carrot Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

Store the cake in an airtight container or covered in plastic wrap in the refrigerator.

how to make a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

This is such a delicious moist carrot cake.  It's full of delicious ingredients in addition to carrots,  like pineapple, raisins, and walnuts that make it so delicious and never dry.  The cream cheese icing is the perfect finishing touch to add some sweetness and creaminess and that cream cheese tang.  Once you try this recipe, it's sure to become your go to one, and don't be surprised if your guests ask you for the recipe too.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Yesterday we hosted a little Easter Tea Party for lunch, with lots of family favourites, that I thought I'd share. A big turkey or ham traditional Easter dinner  is great, but this made for a nice change and it was so, so yummy.

how to host an Easter Tea Party

Easter Tea Party Decor

I set up the party in the dinning room. Our fun centre piece was a tray of wheat grass that we'd been growing for about a week and half.

I wanted to do a large trough style planter for Easter, but couldn't find a container large and shallow enough to suit. What's a blogger to do...make their own. I found some scrap wood in the basement, cut it, screwed it together and gave it a little white wash of paint. It's a little wonky, but we'll call it rustic. 😉 I lined it with a plastic bag, and soaked and sprouted my wheat grass.

It grew really quickly, and is such a welcome sight of green this time of year when we're itching to get out into the garden, but it's not quite time yet around here. I added a few little butterflies for fun.

I also used some pretty hurricane vases, I've had for years, and added some sweet Easter egg filler from the dollar store.

Since I already had pink and blue on the table, I decided to go with all the pastel Easter colours and used these pretty polka dot plates. And, aren't the cute Easter napkins sweet? Love how the grass on them related to the centre piece too.

Many years ago, when I was only 18, I lived in England for a year for school. I was introduced to cream teas; beautiful scones, served with butter, jams, and clotted cream. It was love at first taste. It can be tricky to find clotted cream here, but for my local readers, I found it at the Metro.  And you can find my favourite and easy food processor scone recipe here.  I've been making them for years and years, they are tested and true.

Sweet Treats

  • shortbread
  • chocolate nest cookies
  • mini jam tarts
  • butter tarts
  • chocolate cheese cake eggs
  • jelly beans

We also had some other sweets. I made these classic shortbread cookie bars, and these sweet chocolate coconut oatmeal nests, an Easter favourite. I also made some little tarts, some mini jam ones, and some butter tarts with raisins. The other little treat was these precious chocolate cheese cake eggs. I was inspired by Steph at Raspberri Cupcakes, and used her recipe for the cheesecake filling. For the centre I used a little pear jam, with a few drops of yellow food colouring. The guests oh-ed and awe-ed over them. And they were really easy, and since they're no-cook, my 8 year old daughter did most of it herself.

Everything was washed down with lots of tea. It was so yummy, and with all these pretty pastels, it made it feel like spring which I'm sure is coming any day now. 😉

Banoffee Pie Recipe: with toffee made from condensed milk, bananas, and whipped cream combined into a pie this dessert is rich and delicious.

This Banoffee Pie Recipe is rich and sweet and delicious.  This is the perfect dessert for banana lovers, and a favourite at our house.  Banoffee pie gets its name from a combination of bananas and toffee, yum. The pie has a pie crust made from graham crackers.  This buttery crispy base is perfect for this dessert and contrasts with the rich and creamy sweet caramel toffee, fresh bananas and whipped cream topping.

Banoffee Pie is very popular in Ireland and also a classic British dessert, and after you taste it, you'll know why. It's the perfect dessert for a St. Patrick's Day celebration.  But this dessert is a great one to enjoy any time of year.  Make it for a dinner party or any special occassion.

Graham Cracker Pie Crust

This pie has a crunchy graham cracker crust.  It's the perfect crunchy contrast to the smooth and creamy filling inside.  We used graham cracker crumbs to make ours, but if you are starting out with graham crackers you can make them into fine crumbs in your food processor or even by placing them into a ziplock bag and using a rolling pin to crush them.  If you prefer you can use digestive biscuits to make a biscuit base for tis pie.

Banoffee Pie Recipe

Sweetened Condensed Milk Caramel

The star ingredient to this delicious pie is the homemade caramel toffee layer.  It's made by boiling a tin of condensed milk.

To make the caramel, you start out with a can of sweetened condensed milk. The caramel is made by boiling an UN-OPENED can in water for about 3 hours. Just peel off the can label and submerge in a large pot of water, remember to top up the water every so often to ensure the can remains covered.

The can of condensed milk can explode if the pot boils dry. I've never had any trouble with it, but do be careful, and make sure to keep checking the water levels over the 3 hours by setting your timer.

After the unopened can of condensed milk boils for 3 hours, it slowly cooks into an amazing thick and sweet caramel, which makes the perfect toffee filling for our banoffee pie.

Some people like to use two cans of condensed milk to make the caramel pie filling, but I think one is perfect. It might seem like a thin layer, but it's so, so rich that you really don't want too much filling.

If you want an very easy banoffee pie recipe you can use store-bought dulce de leche.  These tins have already been made into caramel and it enables you to skip the step of boiling the can.  It's a great time saver, and perfect for anyone who is a bit nervous about boiling the sealed can.  Look for it in the same section where the sweetened condensed milk tins are in grocery stores.

boiled sweetened condensed milk

Bananas

It wouldn't be a delicious banoffee pie, without the banana layer.  Be sure to use ripe bananas and slice them into even pieces.  Some People like to add some lemon juice to the banana slices to help keep them from turning brown, but we've found layering them between the caramel layer and the whip cream keeps them from oxidizing so the the lemon juice isn't necessary.  Do work quickly on this step to keep them from turning brown while you're working.

Whipped Cream

This pie is topped with homemade whipped cream.  It is a really delicious addition to the pie.  In contrast to the thick, rich, heavy caramel filling the whipped cream offers a different texture and lightens up the dish.  You could use a whipped topping like cool whip in place of homemade whipped cream, but we much prefer the fresh taste of whipped cream.  It's quite easy to make with a stand mixer or an electric mixer, and worth the effort because of how great the taste is.

Chocolate

This pie is traditionally topped off with some chocolate curls, or grated chocolate over the top.  Use your favourite good quality chocolate for the topping.  We used milk chocolate, but if you prefer dark chocolate you can use it instead.  The pie is very sweet from the caramel filling already, so the dark chocolate would be a good contrast with the sweet..

Ingredients

  • 300 mL can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 ½ cup graham cracker crumbs
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 6 tablespoon butter melted
  • 2 bananas sliced
  • 237 mL whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • chocolate shavings

Instructions

  • In a large pot fully submerge an unopened sealed can of sweetened condensed milk with the label removed. Boil for 3 hours. Add water as needed to keep the can fully submerged, and be sure to check the water levels regularly. Note that if the pan boils dry the can could explode, so take care to keep checking the water levels over the 3 hours.
  • In a pie plate combine the graham cracker crumbs, ⅓ cup of sugar, and melted butter. Stir to combine and then use the back of a spoon to press them into the pie dish evenly on the bottom and sides to form a pie crust. Bake the pie crust at 375 F for 7 minutes.
  • Add the sweetened condensed milk that's been boiled into toffee to the pie crust in an even layer.
  • Add a layer of banana slices on top of the caramel layer.
  • To whip the cream place it in the bowl of stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and beat on high until soft peaks form. Add 2 tablespoon of sugar and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. Add the whipped cream on top of the bananas.
  • Sprinkle the grated chocolate on top of the pie. Enjoy.

St. Patrick's Day Burgers with an Irish Twist

Mar 11, 2013 · Leave a Comment

St. Patrick's Day Burgers: a potato bun, Irish bacon, and Irish cheddar make this the ultimate St. Patrick's Day burger for celebrating.

St. Patrick's Day Burgers: The perfect treat for St. Patrick's Day -Irish Bacon, Irish Cheddar, and Potato Bread Buns.

I had a little St. Patrick's Day party, and wanted a menu that went beyond Irish Stew, or Corned Beef and Cabbage, and this is what I came up with, the ULTIMATE St. Patrick's Day Burgers.  We gave our regular hamburgers an Irish twist with addition of some great Irish ingredients.  They were so delicious.  These are a great for celebrating St. Patrick's Day with family and friends.

I made my own Potato Buns, and then made a burger topped with Irish Cheddar Cheese, and Irish Bacon. And of course, what every St. Patrick's Day dinner needs is more potatoes, so we served them with a side of potato chips.  These might be our new favorite burgers!  The addition of the potato bun, the Irish cheese and Irish style bacon make our Irish themed burger so delicious.  Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

homemade potato buns

Potato Buns

Potato Buns

I started out with the potato buns. I'm not really a bread maker, but I thought I'd give it a try. I found Grandma Roses Potato Rolls Recipe here.

I used my mixer and bread hook (nice to break it out, since I've never used it before) instead of kneading the dough. Since I was making them into hamburger buns, rather than the clover ones in the recipe, I weighed out about 100 grams per bun, to make them all even.

It all seemed to go very well. I followed the recipe, and they did turn out to be really good. I found them slightly dense though, and if I were making them again (or if you were going to give it a try), I would have let them rise again after I formed them into rolls, to make them a little larger and lighter. They were really good though and made delicious burger buns.

You can also use regular hamburger buns from the grocery store, brioche buns, or a pretzel roll for other great options. Toasted buns will make them even better.

Burgers

For our beef burgers we had simple ground beef burger patties.  You may use your favourite homemade burger recipe, or buy beef patties already prepared.  We favor an all beef burger patty, mixed with only an egg.  This easy recipe makes the most tender beef mixture. Take care not to overmix your meat mixture if you're making your own, and add your sea salt and black pepper after the patties are formed to each individual burger.  This ensures the most juicy burgers.  If you can cook your beef patty on the bbq, the flame broil makes such a good burger.

Irish cheddar and Irish bacon

Irish Bacon

I used some Irish bacon for the burgers. I found it at my local grocery store, but you might be able to get some from your local butcher, ask for bacon rashers, it's a slightly different cut, somewhere between Canadian back bacon, and regular streaky bacon -and oh so yummy.  As a Canadian I did a little research on the difference between Irish and Canadian bacon.  I realized that we usually eat wet cured peameal bacon here.  Irish bacon is cured and is a slightly different cut, that included the pork loin, but also has a small portion of the pork belly included.  If you can't find Irish bacon, the Canadian back bacon is a good substitution.  Fry it up in a large skillet, and serve your bacon hot on top of your burgers.

Irish Cheddar Cheese

For cheese I used Dubliners Irish Cheddar.  We added it on top of your burgers just as they were finishing, so the cheese could melt.  The Dubliner cheese is a robust cow's milk cheese.  It's similar to cheddar, with a combination of a sharp, sweet, nutty flavor.  It melts beautifully and that's why we've chosen it for our St. Patty’s Day hamburgers.

Toppings

We topped our burgers with regular mustard, ketchup and relish.  Another great option would be some caramelized onions.  Cook sliced onions slowly until they are caramelized and sweet and serve them on top of the burger.  Onion rings would be a delicious topping for the burgers also, delivering crunchy onions in each bite.

St. Patrick's Day Burgers: The perfect treat for St. Patrick's Day -Irish Bacon, Irish Cheddar, and Potato Bread Buns.

Just for fun, I made used some free printables from Love The Day, and attached them to a green toothpick for the perfect little St. Patrick's Day touch.  Just add them to the top bun for a special St. Patrick's Day touch.

These were so, so yummy served up with some kettle cooked potato chips for an easy side.  These were way better than boiled cabbage, so if you're looking for a special Irish recipes to use for a St. Patrick's Day dinner, this one is a winner.  They'd also be delicious with some fresh cut french fries.

How To Make Maple Syrup Taffy

How to make maple syrup taffy.

Maple Syrup Taffy: you only need two ingredients to make this winter treat -maple syrup and snow. Perfect for celebrating on a snowy day.

How do you enjoy snowy days?  Make Maple Syrup Taffy.

In the midst of snowy days that seem unending, we're embracing it.  Last weekend we made snow angels, drank hot chocolate, and made a special treat of maple syrup taffy.  There's only two ingredients in this maple candy treat and one of them is snow!  If you have some fresh snow, it's the perfect time to try this Canadian favorite made with real maple syrup.  It's super simple to make, and the only special equipment you need, other than cold snow is a candy thermometer.  This will help you get the hot syrup to the precise temperature to insure your maple snow candy gets that right consistency of taffy that's chewy and sticky.  This is such a great way to enjoy the snow in late winter.

A Classic Treat

The first time I ever had this was on a school trip to Quebec when I was a teenager.  We visited a traditional maple sugar shack surrounded by maple trees.  I remember smelling the maple sap boiling as soon as we saw the little house in the woods.  After talking to us all about how they collect the sap of the maple tree, and boiled it into pure maple products in the sugar shacks, it was time to taste some maple syrup taffy candy.  They brought out large baking sheets filled with shaved ice and poured maple taffy for us all to try with our wooden popsicle stick.  It reminded me of something Laura Ingalls Wilder would have done in Little House In The Big Woods, but they would have had sleigh rides to get there.

Can You Use Table Syrup?

It's really a simple process to make this delicious winter treat.  All you need is a candy thermometer.  And, I guarantee your kids will love this maple syrup candy. 😉 Also do make sure you're using pure maple syrup and not table syrup or corn syrup.  The taste of pure maple syrup is so much better in this recipe, and it's worth the extra expense.  Will table syrup work?  Yes, if you boil it to 235 degrees it should work too, but it won't quite taste the same, and will have a slightly different texture, that's more chewy.  So, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

pouring Maple Taffy on snow

We poured out our hot maple syrup on a clean snowy patch in our backyard.  After a few seconds, we rolled the snow taffy onto popsicle sticks.

Troubleshooting

If you pour out your maple syrup and it doesn't start to harden and form a taffy it means you didn't boil your maple syrup long enough.  When you're making your own maple syrup taffy, be sure to get it up to 235 degrees for it to form into taffy when it hits the cold snow.

I made this batch of maple syrup snow candy for my kids and this sweet treat got a big thumbs up!  We had such a fun time making it together, and it was the perfect treat for our snowy weekend.

St Patrick's Day Art

St Patrick's Day Art: use an inexpensive dollar store canvas to create this DIY St Patrick's Day Art that says "I Feel Lucky".

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

I thought it would be fun to do a little decorating for St Patrick's Day, it's still so snowy and cold here that thoughts of spring and a little green are more than welcome! I made this fun "I feel lucky" St Patrick's Day Art piece in an afternoon with just a few supplies.

St Patrick's Day art supplies

Materials:

  • dollar store blank canvas
  • green craft paint
  • alphabet stencil
  • black sharpie marker
  • gold leaf adhesive
  • imitation gold leaf

How To Make It:

I started with an unpainted canvas from the dollar store, and some green craft paint. I gave the canvas two coats, and let it dry completely.

Then I used an alphabet stencil, and wrote the words "I" and "FEEL" with a black sharpie.

For the word "LUCKY" I outlined the word in pencil.

Then I used some special glue for gold leaf -that I had left over from a silver leafing project. I used a small paint brush to carefully paint inside the letters.

adding gold leaf glue to an art piece

Next I let the glue set 15 min., according to the package directions, and then laid a sheet of imitation gold leaf on top, and burnished it down to the glue.

adding gold leaf to an art piece

I used a paper towel to rub off the excess, and reveal the gold leaf lettering.

It turned out so great, and it was so inexpensive to put together.

DIY St. Patrick's Day Art

I like how it's not over the top St Patrick's Day, just enough to make you smile. 😉
